Pentakill - Smite and Ignite (2014)

Pentakill - Smite and Ignite (2014)

The term 'video game music' can easily be ridiculed. Whether it's referring to chiptunes in the background of games, or full-fledged albums centered around a given franchise, there's often little depth, and in most cases, they make for an easy target. In many instances, it's a fair point, as most productions are gimmicky, relying solely on the driving force of the series from which it originates. Enter Pentakill: a virtual band consisting of character from the popular video game League of Legends. They fully embody this gimmicky nature and are fairly generic as far as genuine musicianship goes. In spite of this, there is still a somewhat enjoyable album to be found here.

The album is decently varied, dipping into the general vicinity of power metal as well as progressive metal. While it doesn't truly root itself deeply enough to be definitively labeled as either, it is at least a commendable effort, and helps to give the album some flavor. There are some moments where the album can catch one's attention with a somewhat catchy section that may hook you in momentarily. These moments are fleeting in most cases, however, in tracks such as Deathfire Grasp, it can help the album out greatly in drawing power.

Some familiar sounds can be heard on the album, specifically in the vocalist department. Jorn Lande of Masterplan, and ZP Theart, formerly of DragonForce, can each be heard contributing vocals to two songs each on the album. Therefore, the vocal performance is actually fairly strong, at least if one were to compare it to the actual voice of Karthus, the deathly lich meant to be portrayed as the actual vocalist of the group. The overall session musicians come together in a manner not unexpected, but nevertheless satisfying, and each track is at least interesting enough for a listen or two.

The novelty factor is undeniable. Many of the small things about the album would fall upon deaf ears if shown to those outside of the League of Legends fanbase. For example, all but one track on the album is named in reference to various items which appear in the game, and at some points, such as in the mechanical-sounding The Hex Core, sound effects from the game itself may be heard in the background. It's small bells and whistles like these that will boost the appeal of the album for diehard fans of the game.

It's cheesy. It's lame. It's nowhere near perfect. All of that being said, there is a certain novelty charm to Smite and Ignite, which is definitely not hurt by the fact that it could actually stand its own if compared to a typical power metal album in the saturated market nowadays. It won't be for everyone, and some folks will fervently detest it, but simply checking out a few tracks definitely couldn't hurt.

Timo Tolkki’s Avalon - Angels Of The Apocalypse (2014)

Timo Tolkki’s Avalon - Angels Of The Apocalypse (2014)

Loyal to his one-album-per-year rule, Timo Tolkki releases Avalon's sophomore album, once again featuring the crème de la crème of power metal.

The only vocalist featured in last year's album that made it into this one is Amaranthe's rising star Elize Ryd, flanked by such a stunning list of singers as ReVamp and Nightwish's Floor Jansen, Epica's Simone Simons, Virgin Steele's David DeFeis and the recently ubiquitous Fabio Lione. The fact that the separation from Stratovarius is still an open wound is shown by the presence of Antti Ikonen on keys and Tuomo Lassila on drums, two ex-Strato members back in the days of 1994's Dreamspace, just as if Timo just wanted to challenge the current Stratovarius line-up, that now aren't doing too shabby.

Angels Of The Apocalypse, though having a stunningly similar structure as last year's The Land Of The New Hope, is characterized by a way darker atmosphere and an overall heavier sound, which is not a bad thing, recalling how cheesy the aforementioned 2013 album is. This time, moreover, Timo tried to unbind his music from the boundaries of typical power metal, being just "Stargate Atlantis" the first "typical" track here. Continuously jumping from male to female vocalist and from gothic to rockish tendencies, the album strives to remain captivating, sometimes even unsettling the listener due to a feeling of disunity emerging on some occasions.

But this obviously has its positive sides since, if The Land Of The New Hope sounded way too generic, Angels Of The Apocalypse shows off a bunch of interesting ideas, some of which could have been pushed a little more, as in "Rise Of The 4th Reich", also crippled by a somehow weird mix. This last is still dominated by Timo's guitarwork, especially in the solos, even if this is not as blatant as it was in Avalon's debut, where it reached almost painful levels.

Solos deserve a special mention since, finally, Tolkki's guitar sings for us once again. Not with frantic, super-fast duels with keys as those we were used to enjoying in Stratovarius, but with slower, more thoughtful guitar solos that, though risking to end up a little stale in the long run, still maintain their poetry.

Every singer does his duty, without stunning performances such as last year's Kiske or disappointments in Tony Kakko and Russell Allen, again from The Land Of The New Hope, while Tuomo Lassila manages to deliver every time a little more than mere homework and Antti Ikonen is more helpful in song construction than in soloing, and to whom just a little succession of notes is more than enough to show off his skills: it's the case of the simple, slow and beautiful melody that rules the album outro, "Garden Of Eden".

In conclusion, Angels Of The Apocalypse is a really enjoyable album, from start to finish, that suggests that Avalon might really be the best environment for Timo Tolkki, after the experiences in Revolution Renaissance and Symfonia. Anyway, this is still far from Timo's personal Visions.

Dragon's Kiss - Barbarians of the Wasteland (2014)

Dragon's Kiss - Barbarians of the Wasteland (2014)

With a MARQUIS DE SADE and a NEW ORDER cover, DRAGON’S KISS present another 6 of their own songs with their new album "Barbarians of the Wasteland". From Portugal this is a project based album with guest musicians, so with the calling to arms of some skillful players you'd expect something cool. So is it?

Well from the off it is very Metal and yes, as skillful as you would think. I did laugh at the title of the first track, but only as it made me think of the title "Warriors of Genghis Kahn" by BAD NEWS, lol, but it opens with a drum fill, a great metal riff, some cool solo work, and feels classic already. Raspy but nicely pitched vocals (actually reminding me a little of my old mate Schmier from DESTRUCTION) and a pounding pushed temp drives the track, a little breakdown pre the outro and some nice harmonized guitar to see us out, all nice stuff. "Ride for Revenge" opens with a classic NWOBHM type riff and again some cool guitar work, very '80's in feel, ala SAXON etc., no need to list bands, you get it right? Although the lead guitar work is very 2000's in skill and style, which really sits very well on this. Again, the track feels like I should have already heard it before, like it was already a known track. If Rob Halford was singing in parts, this feel like classic JUDAS PRIEST too. The production is the variant, wider than a PRIEST production on album but never the less, very well executed by all performers.

"Ride Til We Die" feels like Blackie Lawless singing, lol, again a mix of NWOBHM and some old world 80's German Metal. Just found myself grinning, lol. The title and the main body riff could be from one of those Nordic brother bands, with a different vocal approach… "Wild Pack of Dogs" starts with a, well, wild pack of dogs…what else would you expect…and a type of 'Fast Eddie Clarke' riff ala, FASTWAY not MOTORHEAD. It’s hard to actually qualify this track. It's a little somewhere and nowhere, but I still liked it.

Next the first of the 2 covers, "Somewhere Up In The Mountains" by the NWOBHM band, MARQUIS DE SADE, it's ok, didn't move me but nothing wrong with it.. "Castle Of The Witch" is a mid-temped track. Again some nice guitar work and some tidy Wah wah action, chugging its way along with another very Norse feeling, but again, good production, loud, harmonious metal. NEW ORDER's "Rock N Roll Soldiers" comes next. Just hate the chorus, but you might not. Again as a cover I guess it's ok but other than being here coz the guys liked the track originally, I think was not required. For me anyway.

"I Embraced the Serpent and the Devil in the Dark" closes this album. I read somewhere something about MOTORHEAD. I guess maybe this is as close as you will get to them on this album but basically, they are nothing like MOTORHEAD. At times some old time TANK, but not really. The closer is as basic as it gets. The riff the arrangement so I think this project in total is not trying to hide their 1980's influences and they wanted to make a pure, classic feeling Metal album and I think they did a great job doing that. Fun although a little obvious, but played with great feeling and intent. But if I picked a none winner, it’s the final track. It just didn't work for me, almost but, not quite.

Witheria - Devastating Return (2014)

Witheria - Devastating Return (2014)

Old school Thrash has been given a new dimension in recent years with so many bands embracing the genre that I feel that it might be the only kind of music that will still be played even in post-Apocalyptic era by aliens and zombies, considering the lyrical themes these bands end up with!! Hahaha!! Consider WITHERIA, originating from Finland, blasting their 4th full length album here with “Devastating Return”, goes with the tried and tested ways of riff based Thrash Metal and still sounds fresh.

While the album starts off with fast paced thick riffs with little or no innovativeness, as the album progresses the riffage gets better and axemen Markus Taipale and Lappis are found bringing in new and innovative riffs to the table all the way through. Surprisingly there are wonderful short drum solos as well by Rob Diver behind the drum kit, and not to mention the fast paced drum beats that fills the album all the way through. Without trying to be the fastest band on the planet, WITHERIA brings in innovative catchy riffs and not to mention some exquisite solos like in “Burnt to Ashes”. The bass of Max Pekkonen does pop out every now and then, but does manage to succeed in making the album sound heavier and much better as a whole. Tuberculosis seem to scream the hell out of his vocal chords and occasionally bringing in growling vocals in every song. Though the vocals are reminiscent of few other Thrash bands like SODOM, which bring in similar vocals, it’s the timing and not over doing it, is what really works for these boys. I was quite surprised to hear duel vocals together in “Some Wounds Will Not Heal”, but the band does no mistake in executing it right! Surprisingly there is some chaotic music in “Thrown Down the Well”, of which all of it isn’t impressive, but then again the band moves into its original riff based Thrashing which works just fine. The band finishes of the album with “Back on Earth”, trying to over experiment/innovate here with a 9:38 min song and the song itself being not as good as the band intended it to be and in my opinion losing the momentum and impact created by the album till then, and is probably the only major disappointment in ‘Devastating Return’.

The production is quite impressive as the band hasn’t tried to over polish the album and has a light raw feeling to it and lyrically speaks about weapons and armoury created by man and the problems it has caused to the human mankind at large. WITHERIA seems to show a lot of maturity with this album and this album has all the ingredients to make it to some Top 10 lists at the end of the year and is an album you don’t want to miss if you are an ardent Thrash Metal fan like I am.

JackDevil - Unholy Sacrifice (2014)

JackDevil - Unholy Sacrifice (2014)

And here starts a New Era on Brazilian Metal: The NAOBM, or we can say “New Age of Brazilian Metal”, for JACKDEVIL, the Thrash Demons from Sao Luís do Maranhão, are back for the attack. And finally, after two EPs, they come with their first album, “Unholy Sacrifice”.

Their music is an old school Thrash Metal with many melodies from NWOBHM, or in another words, sounds like Thrash Metal bands before 1986 (the year of Thrash Metal canonization), when melodies would appear more easier than later. And you’ll hear clearly that these guys are not forcing their work in this way, but it flows from them.

Great vocals (a normal tune with aggressive approach), astonishing guitar riffs and melodic solos, technical bass guitar playing and heavy drums is what awaits you when this Southern Demons are on attack.

The album sonority is dry and heavy, so something reminds us of what METALLICA used on “Master of Puppets” (don’t get the wrong idea and think it’s alike, please), so make the instruments sound clear, but giving strength and weight to their work. And the art is based upon a terror tale written by André Nadler (the band’s vocalist / guitarist) called “O Sacrifício Maldito”, and you can read here, if you understand Brazilian Portuguese: http://www.assombrado.com.br/2014/02/conto-assombrado-o-sacrificio-maldito.html

This album is perfect from beginning to its end, having as greater moments “Unholy Sacrifice”, “Beastrider” (both with high adrenaline peaking the maximum due great guitar works), “Thrash Demons Attack” (bass and drums are great here), “Behind the Walls” and the bonus track “Under the Metal Command” (track from their first successful video on YouTube on time from their first EP).

Got thrashed by the Brazilian Thrash Demons!

Zoldier Noiz - Regression Process (2014)

Zoldier Noiz - Regression Process (2014)

ZOLDIER NOIZ, a French band formed in 1999, have just given us an excellent album entitled "Regression process". Indeed a masterpiece I would say, and all the mess starts off with "Grave Crawler" and from then on it is all about Thrash Metal. These three French maniacs managed to incorporate a little bit of VOIVOD, old SEPULTURA, MOTORHEAD and some old Punk style into their music and the outcome is total destruction, I mean, organized chaos well played and with lots of energy.

I quite like the idea of short songs, you do not have to play six minutes songs to prove that you are good, most songs in this album are about three minutes, and it is just total mayhem, Thrash Metal at its best. Most songs have killer solos, amazing drumming at speed of light and very tidy indeed, old school vocals and torturing riffs, it is old school with a fresh sound, as production goes it is very basic and perhaps that is the secret behind this excellent album, no techno bullshit behind it, everything just comes together like magic, only a "Filthy Few" will survive this onslaught and there is no "Random Justice" because "Tomorrow Is Today".

Unspeakable Axe Records have signed an amazing band, where did they find these guys I do not know, all I can say is that, please find some more! Ah don't we love the French? They have given us some amazing bands in the past, bands like: KILLERS, SORTILEGE, NIGHTMARE, ADX, MASSACRA and now ZOLDIER NOIZ, vive la France!

Holy Moses - Redefined Mayhem (2014)

Holy Moses - Redefined Mayhem (2014)

You can't teach an old dog new tricks. But, if your dog's name is Holy Moses, you really don't need to.

Even though the band was one of the forerunners of the German thrash movement, they were never considered a part of the "Big 3" (four, if you count Tankard). Maybe because their stand-out album, Finished With The Dogs, wasn't released until 1987 (I really won't count their debut album, sorry) while the "others" already had some remarkable releases in circulation. Who knows - regardless, today's Holy Moses is still as relevant to thrash metal as they were back in the Eighties. Case in point, their newest album Redefined Mayhem.

Mayhem - "needless or willful damage or violence". Damage to your neck muscles and violently moshing in the pit? Without a doubt.

Redefine - "to reexamine or reevaluate especially with a view to change". Change, as in Holy Moses incorporated more of their death and black metal influences into the new album? Cool with me, since they never stuck to a strict "thrash formula" and usually had some off-genre elements complimenting their sound anyways. "Triggered", the second track on the album would be one of those examples, as well as "Redemption Of The Shattered". While the latter is still thrashy, and I couldn't stop headbanging, it is also more progressive in nature. And dat guitar solo - holy moses crap. As a matter of fact, if change also meant to have those ridiculously awesome solos and/or riffs in the album - bring it. Don't get me wrong, Holy Moses always had some great guitarists and the genre demands guitar driven songs, but their new shredder (Peter "Pete" Geltat) is just criminally good.

And speaking of good, I was immediately drawn to "Undead Dogs" and somehow can't shake the urge to scream "PHOBIA" every time I listen to it now; especially at the beginning of the guitar solo. While "Delusion", another "odd-man-out" song, and somehow among my favorites on the album, is a very simple track, the constant male backing vocals add a dark undertone to it. Or "Into The Dark", which starts slow and atmospheric before going all apeshit - head banging not only promised but guaranteed.

Throughout the entire album, the bass is not only thumping but also very high in the mix. Bassist Thomas Neitsch brings something to the table in each and every song on Redefined Mayhem and Gerd Lücking is no slouch behind his kit neither. There are no useless "let's hit the snare or cymbal just for the heck of it" which makes for a very enjoyable listening experience. Last but certainly not least, Sabina Classen cements her legacy as one of the few female harsh vocalists in this male dominated genre once more; woman got pipes.

While Redefined Mayhem might not go down as THE thrash metal album of Holy Moses, I am almost certain that old, as well as newfound fans, will spin it more than once or twice. Seriously, even after the third listening I heard passages, riffs, screams or shouts which I didn't notice before. Make sure you give it a thorough listening before you pass judgment.

Mekong Delta - In A Mirror Darkly (2014)

Mekong Delta - In A Mirror Darkly (2014)

While the German progressive thrash troupe Mekong Delta had an eleven year silence between full lengths with 1996’s Pictures at an Exhibition and 2007’s Lurking Fear, it’s evident, by now, that the resurgence wasn’t just a short standing trip down memory lane.  2014 brings the band’s fourth full length album since their return in 2007 (and eleventh overall), In a Mirror Darkly.  Mekong Delta has always been one of those bands hovering between the absurdly technical and the amazingly melodic.  Many bands go for clinical either precision by eschewing melody or the other way around, but Mekong Delta has been traversing that gap since their formation in 1985.

Continuing to juxtapose classically inspired guitar acrobatics with progressive structures and thrashing rhythm section, Mekong Delta strive forth into new territory with In a Mirror Darkly.  That’s not saying this is divergently different than any of the Delta’s previous albums, because, if anything, this is continuation of their sound, but, once again, it’s elevated onto a new plane.  Ralf Hubert, the mastermind behind Mekong Delta, stated that the concepts on In a Mirror Darkly are a continuation of the themes presented during their previous full length, Wanderer on the Edge of Time, but even he cautioned that this is not the same album.  Traces of Mekong Delta’s previous work can be found throughout: in the melodic balladry at the beginning of “The Silver in God’s Eye”; in the blistering and fiery yet precisely progressive rhythms during “Mutant Messiah”; and in the awe inspiring, classically influenced lead guitar runs during “Inside the Outside of the Inside”.

The key to Mekong Delta’s sound being so overwhelmingly brilliant is their ability to smoothly transition from these metallic classical recitals into gut busting thrash metal into virulent heavy metal anthems, leaving no trace behind.  It’s good to see that after (almost) thirty years of thrashing, these guys still get it.  It’s not a play-it-safe kind of album.  In a Mirror Darkly hearkens to the band’s past without copying what they’ve done.  Mekong Delta has always effectively combined what I love about thrash and progressive metal and always weeded out most of what I hated.  In a Mirror Darkly boasts some of the tightest drum rolls and double kicks I’ve ever heard and plenty of guitar lines that will make your jaw drop.  While I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the Delta’s first two vocalists, Wolfgang “Keil” Borgman and Doug Lee, Martin LeMar has definitely earned his right to front one of the planet’s tightest acts.  LeMar’s layered vocal approach embodies the range of Crimson Glory’s late Midnight with touches of the wailing, air raid style of Bruce Dickinson.  He has a smooth delivery that is powerful, emotive and still allows the instruments to shine through.

In a Mirror Darkly is a true testament to the songwriting abilities of Ralf Hubert and crew.  Nearly thirty years after their formation Mekong Delta is as potent and virulent as ever.   I must say, though, that like the rest of Mekong Delta’s growing catalog, I find myself yearning for the sections that showcase the band’s ability to play frenetic, technical classical music through a heavy metal lens.  This doesn’t mean that the band’s progressive thrashing and more mellow segments aren’t good, it’s just that when I want to listen to Mekong Delta I was to hear mind blowing classical inspired progressive thrash.  In a Mirror Darkly will not disappoint fans of Vektor, Watchtower and Voivod, because, despite the band’s constant leaning towards the classical side of things, this is still a thrashing beast of an album: heavy and beyond tight.  This is an album firmly plants Mekong Delta into the master class of metal bands.

Order of Isaz - Seven Years of Famine (2014)

Order of Isaz - Seven Years of Famine (2014)

"Seven Years Of Famine" speaks many things in many ways. With the different haunting tone, there is more of gothic side to it. Like Type o Negative, maybe this band is new hope for powerful Gothic fans. The opening track "The Coalesce" didn't impress me but then it progressed to different level.

Tobias Sidegard has a charm for his vocals to pull out the unique voice to Gothic level. There is wavery of tone with hint of different soothing and mere mystery in that voice.  Riffs are beautiful as it is, clean guitars of Magnu Naess puts even more beauty to it. Anders Bentell did a beautiful job on drumming. The word "Beautiful", "Mystery", "Lonesome" can be detected in every track of it. Track 5 "Drowning" is amazing than it sounds. There are more powerful gothic elements. It's like they are trying to up come with a different production of introspection in Gothic level.

"Dying Star" is perfection towards Gothic is beautiful with violin element. The bass provided by Johnny Hagel gives the blend. The album is well establishing and will drive any Gothic fan to add this album in their playlist. 9 tracks are epic but the band cannot be under-estimated for its potential. Seven years of Famine can be new type of Old school Gothic but then again its upto the listeners whether to listen to them or not. Even though not being a Gothic listener, I would assure that this album would give you the best listen.

Track "Father Death" has its perfect timing of the start to the end and not to mention, my favorite picks are "Drowning", "Screeching Owl" which has certain mysterious sound into it, "Dying Star" because the clean guitars and the vocals just blend into a new piece of amalgamation of Gothic nature and last favorite is the "UmbraSombra" which is really diamond polishing kind of track with an enchanting riff.

Last of all, this band has struggled its way. Formed in 2009 and launching their first album after five long years, they made a progress. "Seven Years Of Famine" is their gift to Gothic Metal. Let's cherish it.

Conorach - Through The Ages (2014)

Conorach - Through The Ages (2014)

Six long years after their debut, Tales From The Tavern, the Dutch band Conorach make their comeback with their sophomore album, Through The Ages.

Few album titles were ever more appropriate than this one, as Conorach play that classic kind of medieval-esque power metal that considers taking the listener back in years, between knights and barrels of ale, its main goal. A goal that has been achieved, as the atmosphere of this album is credible and captivating, thanks not to intrusive, unnecessary orchestrations or sickening narrations of heroic deeds, but to the overall sound of the whole, the cohesion between the band's members and a certain songwriting airiness.

Conorach's power metal is straightforward and rough enough not to disgust the genre haters. Jacco de Wijs' unexpectedly "human" voice - meaning that it feels like a common human singing, not some scarily high-pitched mermaid or the likes of it - and a production that, compared to their 2008 album, wisely pushes keys into the back to give more space to the guitars, therefore granting the whole album a more concrete sound.

However, it's mainly de Wijs' vocal work that gives the album its personal soul, since the musicianship, though not being uninspired, draws a lot from the genre's heavyweights, or from Iron Maiden regarding several typical Maiden'ish harmonies in the beginning of some tracks, and maybe lacks memorable hooks. What Through The Ages probably misses, is a "When The Lights Are Down", an "Emerald Sword" or an "Eagleheart": a track that fans find themselves humming over and over again. The opener "Finest Hour", which has also been the song chosen for their video, tries to do the job, but achieves it only in part.

Through The Ages is a good power metal release, enriched by some folk and progressive touches here and there, but it's not the album that will allow the band filling the gap with the genre's biggest acts. But considering what an improvement this has been from 2008's Tales From The Tavern, it seems like the guys in Conorach could still have something important to say. Don't expect your new AOTY, but Conorach's latest is definitely worth a shot.

Monument - Renegades (2014)

Monument - Renegades (2014)

MONUMENT has gone from strength to strength in the last year or so. From the recording of the superbly well received EP “Rock The Night” to their last single “Runaway” the band has been dominating the proving grounds of the London music scene. Fresh off their UK tour with WHITE WIZZARD, the band put the finishing touches on their debut album Renegades. Filled with some mighty new tracks and some beefed up version of the EP classics, this is an album that will please fans of both classic and modern metal, with fantastic musicianship all around.

The album opens up with title track “Renegades”. With a lightning fast introductory riff and stabbing bass and drums involved, we are then re-introduced to the powerful vocals of Peter Ellis with some ridiculously high notes harmonized to the maximum. This is a great start to the album, with a catchy chorus full of attitude, to the harmonized lead guitars and epic breakdown later on. There are some recognizable tracks from the band’s past here too, in that the entirety of the “Rock The Night” EP is included here. Now, some may say this is a lazy move but it really isn’t here, as the tracks have been re-recorded with the current lineup, with the increased clarity and power in the mix and overall massive improvement that makes it a worthwhile endeavor for the listener and the band.

The new tracks on the album include lead single “Runaway” and the second single “Crusaders”. I have already reviewed “Runaway” before but to summarize, it’s a grooving track with a DEEP PURPLE vibe in the guitar and a real catchy chorus. Crusaders is a cool track with a real old school SAXON meets IRON MAIDEN feel to it, with a galloping main riff and a some awesome solos later on. “Red Dragon” is the instrumental track for the album, and it has a very old school feel to it, like something from one of the first two IRON MAIDEN albums with a bit more musical knowhow thrown into the mix. Lots of furious drumming on this one and some awesome guitar harmonies make for a great track here.

“Save Me” is the closest thing to a ballad on the album, with a sombre opening riff with clean guitars and some tasty bass played. A powerful chorus makes this a track to remember, with some awesome emotive lyrics and a great mid-section later on. “Omega” closes the album, beginning with “X Factor” era MAIDEN vibes that leads to an a super powerful sounding main riff. The chorus here is one of my favourites on the album, with a really great sound to it with plenty of bite.

The production is absolutely world class here. Everything is really well recorded and mixed by Akis K, a producer who’s profile is raising to the point of nigh on legendary status in the UK scene; the drum sound he has achieved is simply mind blowing on this album and the overall mastering by Scott Atkins has given it that extra push too.

Overall, this really is as good as it gets right now. The second wave of British Heavy Metal really is rising over the country and we are seeing it take hold in other countries too. With “Renegades”, MONUMENT are going to take the scene by storm yet again, and things are about to be shaken up by this album.

Deep Machine - Rise Of The Machine (2014)

Deep Machine - Rise Of The Machine (2014)

Well the NWOBHM is making a comeback. So many acts that had moments in the 1980's are flying in to bomb the scene with intent again and here we have DEEP MACHINE. Now you could be forgiven for thinking all of these band have been dormant, for all this time, some have (SATAN / VARDIS) and some have not (DIAMOND HEAD / AVENGER) but here we are looking  at the new, first full length, album from DEEP MACHINE. They claim they survived the NWOBHM and without a deal as they were born in 1979 but except for the odd EP the 'deal' eluded them, but here to make up for that is ''Rise Of The Machine''.

They have respectable connective tissue…members being associated with Paul Di'Anno and his LONEWOLF project, ANGELWITCH main brain Kevin Heybourne joining for a spell and even TOKYO BLADE are connected here. So with all that in mind…they have some pretty cool credit on their side…but what of the grooves…what is in their? Let's march on to WAR.

9 tracks and opening up is “The Wizard”, thinking BLACK SABBATH? Well they were heavily influenced by IRON MAIDEN and JUDAS PRIEST (Early) and you can hear bit of both without doubt…but no SABBATH there. Yes I know lots of bands from the day had all that going on but some fought for their own individuality, while some were quite content to 'sound alike'. “The Gathering”, “I am everything”, a monstrous voice tells us, and then a cook riff with nice harmony, feeling nicely PRIEST, cool atmosphere, and feel, although old school of course, I think the music is more contemporary Metal in parts, whereas the vocals are where the dating comes in phrasing and lyrically this is the 80's again, for good or bad. “The Gladiator” comes thumping in with a “Love It Loud” drums pattern, some “United” touches too, going be a big old cloud clapper, chanter here. Well no huge 'all sing' chorus, but touched of the old Biff and SAXON as well and as a bonus, cool solo to boot. “Warhead” comes next but unlike the ugliness and power of VENOM, this is cleaner and crisp, nice upbeat pace track, reminds me of  a few bands actually. They shows they have been playing for a while that is for sure, performances is confident, production is clear and balanced.

Ah “Black Priestess” and a touch of acoustic into, some DIO-esque vocal shaping of Heavy Metal, you are so good to us lol, they even mention Satan and then it has a MAIDEN shape as well and man, it could be ANGELWITCH just missing Kev's voice. A cool song. Now “Hell Forest”, fuck yeah it is and it happily bounces along with classic rhythm pattern, a shout goes out “Hell Forest”, no one knows your name, and to be fair why would they unless it was something like Jeff or David and they took a wild guess. “Witchild”, the son of the devil, ah yes, this is probably the heaviest track yet, darker, I like this and it has a chant chorus for you too, so you get a shot at helping out too, bit of old wah wah and a tremolo dive as well, all has to be good with the world then. “Celebrophile”, doesn't need too much explaining, I mean you can guess the lyrical direction right? Fame and parasites…and well, bollox to be exact, X factor, bottom feeding, or needy people, a good old rocking beat and again some cool riffage going on, this band is very solid, so we draw to a close on DEEP MACHINE and there, well debut album, wow that is mad, 1979 – 2014, friggin A!!! lol…

“Whispers In The Black” and it starts with a whisper and opens like MAIDEN before becoming PRIEST, if they wanted a calling card, something to say this is who we are, then this track sums them up, classic. I would have said retro but these days not so good luck guys and Keep It True….lol…yes I aid that…ok…well if you don't already know…they just played, the masterful Keep It True Festival in Germany and did a great show. So let's have another album guys and this time and not in 35 fucking years later? I'll be fucking dead.

Marty Friedman - Inferno (2014)

Marty Friedman - Inferno (2014)

What ever happened to Marty Friedman leaving metal behind him? Wasn't there a time following Risk where Dave Mustaine said, "Hey, we need to get back to basics and make something heavy," and Marty's only reply was "Nah, I'd rather go make pop music in Japan?"

In the years that have followed, metal has more than caught up with one of the genre's quietest forerunners. For those who haven't kept up with his work since the Megadeth split, Friedman has spent considerable time working and touring with Japanese pop acts (including notable soda-financed act FANTA) and doing shots of a weird green drink with fellow big name rock and metal guitarists on his Japanese TV rock show, Rock Fujiyama. Yet, somehow, the oddball pop mentality of Japan never really seeped into Friedman's original solo works.

Instead, 2003's Music for Speeding offered a hard rock approach to Friedman's instrumental shred only to be outdone by the slightly heavier and more modern Loudspeaker in 2006. 2010's Bad DNA only continued the trend and, unsurprisingly, Inferno carries the torch in the same direction. Friedman, it would seem, has kept current on what's big in metal and has tuned down and hooked up the Axe-FX for this one, delivering as many crunchy, rhythmic body blows as he does dizzying solos that carry his signature swagger.

But in a big, big way, Inferno is less about Marty Friedman and more about whichever artist happens to be featured on a given track. Sure, there's an obvious Friedman-era Megadeth tone to many of the tracks (see the intro to "Steroidhead"), but many of the tracks here give the spotlight to supporting vocalists and instrumentalists. For example, the in-your-face meathead brutality of "Sociopaths" is entirely dependent on both David Davidson's vocal delivery and Marty Friedman's ability to pace the solos and let the vocals and rhythms do their work. It's a give and take, and Marty should be praised for knowing and doing what it takes to make the song work.

Still, as effective as Marty's ability to compose to his x factor is, it can come across as a bit bizarre. Case in point, album standout "Lycanthrope," despite being excellent through and through, simply feels like a Children of Bodom track that happened to land on Inferno. It's not the mere vocal addition of Alexi Laiho, either; the entire arrangement feels like it's just set to produce a high caliber item from Bodom's catalog. The only thing missing is Toki Warman. In my humble opinion, it's the album's best track, but its stylistic similarities make it feel a little dirty - as though Marty's somehow cheated a bit to achieve such success.

Aside from versatility lending itself to creating doppleganger tracks, it also manages to develop a huge variety in the songs presented. "Undertow" plays up the light, classical aspect of Friedman's virtuosic playing that's most similar to the material on Introduction and Scenes while "Horrors" does much the same to fuse neo-classical elements with his time in Cacophony (which should come as no surprise considering it was co-composed with Jason Becker). Meanwhile, "Wicked Panacea" may prove to be the album's most unique, mashing Friedman's distorted rhythms with Rodrigo y Gabriela's fast and flowing acoustic prowess to impressive effect.

At the end of the day, Inferno is a great new trick from an old dog with a lot of skill. It's as heavy enough to warrant the Prosthetic imprint, yet varied enough to provide something for all of Friedman's fans, new and old. It's technical enough to attract the gearheads and the solo nuts, but restrained enough to churn out some songs which are memorable for more than just a "he can do that" moment. There are still some odd missteps here and there (I'm sure "Meat Hook" takes talent to play, but it sounds like something I wrote the first week I had access to Guitar Pro) and, as tantalizing as the smorgasbord of variations can be, it makes for an inconsistent listen from track one on through to the end. Still, when treated less as a cover to cover work and more of a bits and pieces affair, Inferno finds itself a contender in the modern metal marketplace that's worth a listen.

Ambush - Firestorm (2014)

Ambush - Firestorm (2014)

Ask and you shall receive! Shortly after reviewing the single for Swedish act - AMBUSH I have been asked to take on their debut full-length, and it does not disappoint. Honoring their native land's ancestors and souls of inspiration including: OVERDRIVE, HEAVY LOAD, TRASH, BISCAYA, SILVER MOUNTAIN, MIDNIGHT SUN, and ZONE ZERO, AMBUSH deliver a mescaline induced intermixture of madness and viscous venom; a molotov cocktail of frenetic energy, high-octane speed, vicious momentum, and burning ambition.

Their premiere effort for High Roller records, aptly called “Firestorm” due out in a month truly lives up to its namesake. Even though the exceptional new IRON SAVIOR album has faster amber, ample songs, including one called “Firestorm”, these Växjö's vigilant souls forsake the Teutonic terror for a more Northern hell-fueled aspiration and motor grinding inspiration.

With the opening title track, clearly the “Neon Nights” notes are heir-apparent, but then as the album begins to spin in your head, instantly, you get a sense that these natural Swedish born thrillers aim to keep it closer to the heart of their heritage, hard, heavy, and honest. “Hellbound” is a tad bit toned down, and less ignited, but only to prepare you for the blistering “Don't Shoot (Let 'Em Burn)” for which they made a ingenuous video, replete and riddled with all things Metal.

As I previously mentioned, Oskar's cadence characteristics are very similar to the mercurial vocalist Jonny Aune from TWISTED TOWER DIRE. Many of the tracks are mid-paced but in the old Swedish Metal style. “Close My Eyes” has attentive lyrics, but not enough passion to persuade. “Molotov Cocktail” is a bit more fomented and agitated, with wistful imagination. The mystical “Master Of Pain” trudges along with a ruse of consternation, betwixt contentious haunts which bewitch.  This slower more plodding scheme is a solid reworking of the 2013 Demo track. I still have yet to have heard “Fading To Black”. Overall, the two selections from the single still remain the two-stand-out tracks; perhaps because they are the ones with which I am most familiar.

If you appreciate the chastised youth approach of today who incessantly strive to bring back the glorious vinyl frontier of the '80s championed by such vibrant acts as ARMOR or RANGER from Finland, BLADE KILLER, MIDNGHT HELLION, VOLTURE, SPELLCASTER, from America, etc. then I say, “1,2,3…Semper paratus!” For the metal coup de main and sonic firestorm ambuscade is upon us, under cover of night.
