Overkill - The Electric Age (2013) [Deluxe Limited Bonus Edition]

Overkill - The Electric Age
Overkill is the king of the B level metal bands.  Perpetual runners up to the “Big Four” thrash bands, they’ve been pedalling their punky blend of speed and traditional metal since 1983 and show no signs of stopping…ever! Their Feel the Fire debut is one of my all time favorite albums, and over their long career, they’ve created many a memorable metal moment of the old school variety. Just how long have they been at this? Well, The Electric Age is their SIXTEENTH freakin album, for Christ’s sake! That’s a whole lot of metal from this New Jersey wrecking crew. Much like 2010′s excellent Ironbound, The Electric Age is a thrashy, frantic affair, loaded with energy, adrenaline and cojones. It’s classic Overkill all day long, without much in the way of innovation, growth or progress. Let’s face it, if Overkill was going to evolve, it would’ve happened long ago. They enjoy their neanderthal niche in the metalverse and I wouldn’t change a hair on their grizzled heads.

In true Overkill fashion, early tracks like “Come and Get It,” “Electric Rattlesnake” and “Wish You Were Dead” aim to tear your face off with nary a trace of subtlety or grace. It’s all thick, thrashy riffing, thunderous bass and drums, and Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth’s one-of-a-kind raspy snarl. Things never really let up from there, as all ten tracks are nasty and furious speed anthems, with just enough melodic sense to keep things semi-memorable. “Black Daze” has a bit more mid-tempo grind and a ton of tough swagger. “Drop the Hammer Down” is a winning scorcher, exuding a NY/NJ variety of pissed-off attitude that’s as authentic as it’s mean-spirited. The one-two punch of “Old Wounds, New Scars” and “All Over But the Shouting” will make even the most pacifistic among you feel like breaking a bottle over somebody’s dome. All the songs work and all should pump you up like Red Bull and steroids. This is the soundtrack for an alcohol fueled bender, filled with drunken wisdom, bravado and street justice.

One of the reasons I always loved Overkill‘s sound was the prominence of  D.D. Verni’s bass. He provides a powerful low-end rumble, which makes the music seem so much more angry and huge. The guitar tandem of Derek Tailer and Dave Linsk always impress, and here is no different. They throw jack hammer riffs all over the place and rip out some excellent solos. Somehow, Bobby Blitz sounds better and better with age, though scientifically speaking, he shouldn’t even be able to whisper anymore. The man has been abusing his throat for over 30 years at the mic, after all. To this day, no one sounds better tossing off pre-brawl barroom smack talk like “you got a lotta mouth for a Jersey white boy.”

The downsides are few but noticeable. The songs are all so hyper and in your face, they tend to blend together after a while. By the time the acoustic guitars in closer “Good Night” come along, you realize you’ve been beaten pretty badly by the non-stop, balls-out speed, and some tempo diversity might have helped. There’s also a slight drop-off in the quality of the choruses since Ironbound, and few stick on the first listen. I suppose one could also complain this is utterly without surprises and too similar to Ironbound in style and delivery, but I’m not gonna be one of them. I didn’t expect them to adopt post-rock drone or anything equally un-Overkill.

While not quite as stellar as Ironbound or older classics like The Years of Decay and Horrorscope, The Electric Age is everything you would want in an Overkill album. It’s angry, fast and loud (like most people from New Jersey!) It’s also a grower and sinks deeper into the skin with each successive spin. There’s no Low-T in sight with these guys, and despite a lifetime in the metal underground, they’re still pissing iron. The so-called “Big Four” should take careful notes on these guys. They get harder with age and sound just as convincing as they did in their misspent youth. Congrats guys, I hope there’s sixteen more albums in your rowdy future.

Violator - Scenarios of Brutality (2013)

Violator - Scenarios of Brutality

It's always exciting to be introduced to new albums which these “New Wave of Thrash Metal” bands release every year, especially after years of listening to Thrash Metal, when you may be tempted to feel like you've seen and heard it all. Unfortunately there are many metalheads out there who say the last of the great Thrash bands died out in the 80's and early 90's. Those that claim this have clearly not heard of Violator, the forerunners in this “New Wave of Thrash Metal” trend, who, with their new release "Scenarios of Brutality”, show that Thrash is still a viable force in metal. After listening to this record, one thing is clear, the band's main focus has always been to produce a 100% pure aggressive, in-your-face traditional Thrash metal album. Sure, it doesn't sound like Overkill or Slayer, but that differentiation from the usual sound that thrash bands are associated with helps give this band an identity of their own.

The musicianship on this album is undeniable. Everybody in the band are top-notch at what they do. The guitar work by Capaça and Marcio Cambito is truly incredible. One interesting factor about the solos is the range, right from jaw-droppingly fast to melodic and hard-hitting, each solo is done with an expert amount of skill. To be honest there really isn’t much point in analyzing each song and sorting them out since each and every track from the album leaves the listener with a wholly unique vibe and you end up with an ubiquitous feeling of brutality. Out of 9 tracks, there is no temps' mort and the whole selection is insane as hell right from the frantic bombardment of energetic riffs on "Echoes Of Silence" to the closing with the infectious "Unstoppable Slaughter". One of the most important factors which is going to make this album a memorable Violator album are the series of searing solos, rapid tempo changes and fast transitions between riffing and insanely brutal solos which surpasses what they have done in their previous releases.

Additionally Violator has one unique factor which I really like about them is the ability to mix the basic elements of moderate to high speed thrash with beefed-up drumming to modernize the genre's sound, achieving a welcome robustness. Pedro "Poney Ret" Arcanjo vocals are spit out with appropriate venom. With Arcanjo on bass as well and Batera drum set establishes the foundation with a satisfying bass-heavy emphasis.

The lyrics penned by Violator are truly reflective of the deep turmoil that the members have experienced and witnessed around the society. The way the lyrics are written does add a certain depth beyond the standard chorus refrain and 'political statements' of thrash metal. The lyrical change on "Scenarios of Brutality”makes the album seem far fresher than most New Thrash Metal albums released in recent years.

Another important factor which shines in this album are the arrangements, bucking the 'one riff, one song trend by stuffing every track with at least four or five riffs. Simply put, this is a phenomenal sounding metal record. Yes, there are a lot of those around but for some reason this one sticks out for me. To conclude, the Brazilian metal masters, Violator's New Album, “Scenarios of Brutality” is one of the best thrash albums I have heard in this year and I have to be very honest when I say that bands are going to have to come up with something pretty special to beat this gem. While other bands such as Gama Bomb, Lazarus A.D. or even Warbringer give nods to the thrash metal bands of the eighties, I believe Violator is eighties thrash, and I welcome their return. This is the truth of the matter, because all of their tracks are f**king awesome; the absolute epitome of what Thrash can be.

Amberian Dawn - Re-Evolution (2013)

Amberian Dawn - Re-Evolution

AMBERIAN DAWN’s Re-evolution, though a typically good Symphonic Metal album by a decent Symphonic Metal band, is kind of just that, typical. There is nothing that seems to set Capri’s voice from those in the same genre, but that doesn’t mean her voice isn’t amazing. She has quite a beautiful voice. It seems flatter than that of Simone of EPICA or Tarja of NIGHTWISH (two female lead vocalists I usually compare to in Symphonic Metal, being as they are so highly revered in this genre). This to me isn’t a bad thing as sometimes their voices overpower everything else in the song.

Musically, the album is enjoyable. It is well put together, and as far as re-releases go with a new singer, AMBERIAN DAWN did quite a good job at it, probably one of the better ones I have heard. But they come off so cookie cutter that they don’t really stick out in my mind as a band I could or will remember after one listen. The male-female singing is okay, but they seem to struggle with who do you hear more? Personally, if Capri herself only sang, the song would be just as good.

Overall, "Re-Evolution" is an okay recording. I didn’t feel like I was wasting my time, but I don’t really think I would run out to purchase it. If I happened to be in the store with a little extra money and saw it, I would give it a couple of thoughts. Likely I would leave the store with having purchased it.

Not Fragile - Shout To The Master (2013)

Not Fragile - Shout To The Master

The subgenre of Speed Metal at its truest of forms, like a relic buried six feet under never to be seen or long forgotten, deprived of life. Throughout the 80s, especially in the middle point of the decade, Speed Metal became obvious and quite popular, rapidly merging with Thrash or Power Metal. Back in the day the genre flourished quite well establishing impeccable foundations of bands such as premature TYRAN’S PACE, HELLOWEEN, RAGE, RUNNING WILD, early BLIND GUARDIAN and a bit later GAMMA RAY. Though beginning its break through elevation rather later through the 90s, NOT FRAGILE, it has been driven by the same Metal elements that roughed and energized their aforementioned country peers. Not too sure if their career’s lifespan was full or they had a shakedown a reformed again, but it doesn’t matter. NOT FRAGILE, in comparison to their peers, now giants, preserved the old ways, the traditional Speed Metal bullets, firing full spread 80s attack, sinking their teeth in the present’s ass and not letting go. “Shout To The Master”, via Hellion Records, was released after a bit of a studio dry season for the Germans, yet it brought back memories of the now ancient flame.

Generally, along with NOT FRAGILE’s Speed Metal dedication and utter determination, “Shout To The Master”, may it be forceful racing chase assembled with cracking intense riffery, amazingly motivated Germanic melodic passion and recalls a partial vision of the band’s earlier past ventures, is still isn’t a picture of pure greatness. It defies everything that has been manufacturing modern Metal, which is perfectly fine, but it also found a decent way to replicate itself and through several tracks like on “Lost Behind the Stars”, “I Don't Want to Lie 4 You” and “Zombie Dance” as the best suited examples, it became considerably banal and continual, losing its topmost of interest rather quick. Likewise, the soaring Torsten Buczko, NOT FRAGILE’s constant forerunner at the vocals, may conceivably have a few common voice essentials of Kai Hansen (without the high register aptitudes), apparently doesn’t have enough of a commanding magnitude to make an extensive impact on the songs as a frontman. On the other hand, gratefully the work on his vocal production tied him up a notch, instigating the much needed depth and edge.

All the same, as I described earlier, “Shout To The Master” is measured as a conservancy process of the old methods of producing Speed Metal music, nearly a dying art. Sure that this album has its shortcomings, but it also is an enough reminder of how German Metal once sounded back in the late 80s. The monumental “Human Revolution”, where NOT FRAGILE go against modern times, wishing to maintain an old dominance slowly subsiding. Actually this one staggered me quite a lot. The band ignited a Teutonic anthem filled with melodic licks and harmonics, crushing riffs of old, impeccable vocal demonstration and rather diverse drumming. “Thunderbolt Man” nailing with its venerable ACCEPT tempered hoarseness of the past, reminded me “Monster Man” for some reason, thunders hard with a near Thrash accommodating main riff, piercing with a straightforward chorus, punching through without mercy. “Shout To The Master” and “Years On The Run” are two Speed Metal obsessed remnants, grandstanding brilliant recollections of the sweltering catchiness of past Metal gems, which weren’t forgotten by yours truly by any chance. Musically, these duo of tracks are the right way to manifold such a Metal direction, fast paced assault, heavily riff bombastic and on the prowl with a melodic intent. Not too sure that these guys were on the run, yet after a long time, “Shout To The Master” is a dreamy access to a true form of the old German Speed Metal glittering dreadnought.

Diabolos Dust - Inferno

Diabolos Dust - Inferno

"Inferno" is the name of the second studio album of the band DIABOLOS DUST, the band already has a debut album entitled "Ruins Of Mankind". The Germans have identified their musical style as a combination of Power, Thrash and Heavy Metal, this tendency is confirmed with the art work of this second album that makes you want to find out what is inside.

Germany has always provided us with great bands, including bands of Power and Thrash Metal. Since the first pieces of this album, I noticed quickly very marking elements of both genres that I just mentioned. Extremely precise riffs, mixed with a fast play full of energy. The choruses are extremely important elements and they are showcased with melodies that stick to the head and are supported by the words and the voice of Jürgen Dachl which adds even more personality. Try to listen to "Wasting Time" Or "Wheel Of Fortune".

With the song "Clouds Of Malice", the album is still have a tendency of more Thrash by comparing the direction of the previous songs. A total change has surprised me on "The Lion Gate", it seems more technical and Heavy in the manner of the 80s, which gave another positive point for this album. By linking with the other songs, I can say that the Thrash trends continue with more blast beat rhythms as in pieces like "Fire Down Below" and "The Reaper".

It must be said that "Inferno" is generally a very strong and very well produced album, a good second step for DIABOLOS DUST, but remains to look for the element that makes the music sounds more solid to move to the next step.

Derdian - Limbo (2013) Japanese Edition

Derdian - Limbo

DERDIAN is band from Milan, Italy, formed back in 1998 and has been embracing the realm Symphonic Power Metal. Their discography includes: “New Era (Part I)” of 2005, “New Era (Part II) - War of the Gods” of 2007, “New Era (Part III) - The Apocalypse” of 2010 and the fresh album of 2013, “Limbo”.

The great opener, “Carpe Diem”, surges with fast paced and powerful drums and heavy riffs with the band's backing singing. This is a first presentation of the next hour's show. I like “Dragon Life” with its amazing keyboards display, the energetic rapid pace in the vein of GAMMA RAY. The vocals are high pitched & intensely melodic. This song was built almost to perfection with an impressive rhythm section, penetrating riffing and a grand guitar solo. “Forever In The Dark” handling the true essence of the combo Power Metal with symphonic orchestrations and fine melodies, diverse tempos and definitive keyboards. Every bit of this one seemed planned ahead for a tremendous build up. “Strange Journey” is characterised by great lyrics and impressive singing by Ivan Giannini, a quality that he kept throughout the entire album. The singing followed the rhythm mostly, yet the melodic line took hold as the standout moment massed in the chorus section. The solo section afterwards, even better. “Limbo”, quite an epic, appeared to be progressed in comparison to the classic nature of the rest of the tracks, bits of aggression and elasticity crumbed jointly in robust melodic tunes. “Heal My Soul” features a guitar playing following the likes of HELLOWEEN and STRATOVARIUS, providing an exquisite atmosphere. “Light Of Hate”, smelled of STRATOVARIUS when it came down to the energetic pace, pushes forward, creating a Power Metal sensation crossing with DRAGONFORCE. Worth listening are also the keyboards demonstrations. “Terror” continues the same outpouring of vigour, same goes with “Kingdom Of Your Heart” with its solo instant. “Hymn Of Liberty” is more or less the album's summary and the band's fine antics.

"Limbo” is a killer no doubt about it. I enjoyed it very much. The crew of musicians have plenty of experience and it is being proven nearly every minute of the album's production and compositions. DERDIAN has been a part of the melodic end of Power Metal influenced by quite a selection of bands: GAMMA RAY, HELLOWEEN, RHAPSODY OF FIRE, SONATA ARCTICA, DRAGONFORCE, STRATOVARIUS among the many known bands. This is a fine experience that should be encompassed.

Raving Season - Amnio (2013)

Raving Season - Amnio

The title of this album comes from amniotic fluid, the liquid that protects and surrounds unborn babies. For Raving Season, the word suggests something more broadly, not just new life but also a new season, a time of regeneration. I don't know much about this band's history, but if this album represents a fresh start, then I'm all for it.

The music on this album is best described as atmospheric, but the mood it creates is always a mixed one, bringing together elements that are gothic and doomy. There's also a hint of black metal lurking in the background. I like this kind of music because it serves different moods simultaneously. Whereas some forms of extreme music drown out everything else, this music both rewards careful listening and serves as cool background music.

With no disrespect to the rest of the band, the heart of the overall sound here comes from the two female vocalists, Judith and Federica. The former sings with the clean, melodic, and lyrical qualities, we might call operatic. The latter delivers the growls. On the whole, the two singers alternate rather than harmonize but their respective vocal blend together effectively. In fact, the music plays to the strengths of both styles so well that they never feel like they compete one with the other. Instead, things come together in a more seamless style, transitioning smoothly from note to note and track to track.

Some readers won't like this album because it moves so far away from more conventional aspects of metal music generally and doom metal specifically. Although the sound here is best described as doomy (at least in parts), it should not be seen as a failed attempt to channel bands like Black Sabbath (or some other similar band) and force them into a sound that is more melodic, maybe even something more classical. Instead, this band should be understood to be invoking a larger mood, one that leans on the qualities of doom and takes them into the even darker heart of gothic music. The result is a thoughtful, cerebral, and theatrical album of good songs.

Haken - The Mountain (Limited Edition) (2013)

Haken - The Mountain (Limited Edition)

It’s difficult to know what exactly to expect from an album titled The Mountain, but some might even go out on a limb to say that it has a certain level of pretension applied to it that hasn’t been seen on previous Haken releases. Immediately, the release beings with the piano-laden “The Path” which serves as an introduction to a much different style of sound than we witnessed on Aquarius or Visions. Rather, on this new outing the band sounds like they’re grasping for a greater sense of maturity and hence the Dream Theater comparisons are going to continue. It’s painfully obvious that Haken want to be the next Dream Theater at this point, due to their similar obsessions with the same (often bizarre) level of keyboard theatrics and their larger than life composure.

The Mountain really does feel larger than life in some sections with rippling guitar riffs, thick atmospheres and titanic vocal lines. Guitar solos also get along well with the keyboards on the disc, “Atlas Stone” making for some wonderful listening sections on the piece. However, it might be a little too mature for some – there are some ancient influences on this disc going all of the way back to Yes and King Crimson that the younger generation might not understand. But then again, I will applaud any young listener who opens their ears to this kind of music, as Haken really are trying to bring the classic sound of progressive music back into progressive metal.

Though the disc is plenty heavy, tracks like “The Cockroach King” might come off well to the ears of dear old dad or mom, who were listening to this kind of music back when some of you were still just a thought. Such a track is astounding and a noteworthy attempt to bring back the true spirit of the music into its most extreme construct. But if you’re not keen on the prog epics, “In Memoriam” will give you a quick prog metal fix, with its crunchy guitars and expectable prog atmosphere.

There are a few tracks on the release that may not speak to as many of us however; like the light (at times acappella) nature of “Because It’s There” or the classical ballad of “As Death Embraces” which could debut on the Billboard Top 100 at any moment. This soulful piece is derived the farthest from metal that I’ve ever seen the band go; but the fact still remains that there are still four wonderful progressive metal epics on the disc that will appeal greatly to fans and newcomers alike. These include the Arabic influenced “Pareidolia” for which a video has been released, and the djent-laden “Falling Back To Earth” which comes equipped with monolithic choruses and more intricacies than you can shake a stick at. The limited edition version of the disc comes with a nice atmospheric piece “The Path Unbeaten” and “Nobody” which is in the same vein as “As Death Embraces” and is recommended for fans of this new, softer side of Haken. It’s become certainly apparent to me now, that Haken could either revolutionize the world of progressive metal as we know it; or make pop music a bit proggier. But it’s unknown as to which direction they will take. One thing is for sure though, as the band is slowly starting to become one of the most talked about progressive metal acts of our era… We’ll all be watching them. (Eric May)

Speedtrap - Powerdose (2013)

Speedtrap - Powerdose

'So what exactly is speed metal?' It's a question I've heard a hundred times, striving for an answer that would likely deviate a dozen times from a dozen sources. When I was young, I remember the label being applied to bands like Venom and Motörhead, bands which, unsurprisingly, also wore a lot of other tags (and continue to do so). Then it was on to acts like Metallica and Megadeth, who wrote more sophisticated material, and then later yet it was conflated and conjoined with various acts in the fields of American and European power metal. Semantically, I'm sure there are numerous camps who would argue insignificant details back and forth with no clear winner, but though I often throw the term around myself when describing a band's sound, I will not attempt to do so here.

That said, if one was to picture some sort of idealized, Romantic notion of what a 'speed metal' record was to sound like, then 9 out of 10 times we might end up with something like Powerdose. Vicious, dirty hi octane rock & roll which burns up the dragway faster than you yank off your tanktop to flash the racers your chest (male or female). Punk-like chord progressions accelerated to even more exciting levels of abuse. A few of you might recall Speedtrap's Raw Deal EP, which generated a little buzz back in 2009-2010, likely due to the cover art as much as anything else; a clear nod in tribute to Exciter's seminal Heavy Metal Maniac, but attempting to up the ante by bringing a chainsaw to a knife fight. Well played, Finns, and then again, so was the music, though it was nothing particularly memorable other than some possible signification that we were about to experience a full-on SPEED METAL outbreak. Well, that sort of happened, and sort of didn't...we got bands like Enforcer out of the deal, who practice a more melodic variety with thrash and primal power metal influences, but most excelling in this niche were doing so with an overt black metal influence tracing back to Slayer, Sodom, Venom and Kreator.

Powerdose is nothing of the sort, really: this is an unadulterated, ridiculous, frenetic accumulation of the inspirations I hinted at earlier. Rapid fire road-licks that would make Dave Mustaine salivate, enveloped in the road-hardy attitude we normally associate with a band like Exciter or Motörhead, showing up to the club swathed in leather, sweating up the stage, bumming a cigarette off you before stealing your girl and hitting the highway once more. The bastard child between Satan and the old Looney Tunes Roadrunner character. Maniacal, blues-based riffing patterns and self-indulgent squeals supported by lighting powered snares and toms. A front fiend who alternates between some frivolous, charismatic screams redolent of Exciter, and a meaner mid range, both of which mildly reveal his natural accent. Pummeling strums of the bass guitar that are every bit as energetic as the rhythm tracks, if not often deviating enough that they become interesting. And a vivacious, loud-as-balls production here through which you can hear everything, easily trumping the Raw Deal EP in intense, brick-to-the-face action.

To be honest, I wasn't expecting a lot of variety here, and through about half the cuts, they just race along with abandon, content to leave the listener huffing their dust...but then, you've got some breaks in the action like "Out of Time, Out of Line" where the beats are more of a mid-paced neck-strainer and the vocals seem to hover in the higher range, or "Battle Cry", which bears more of an epic USPM/speed aesthetic reminding me of older Liege Lord or Omen. All the tracks are well performed, and true to its central motivation, the album is over in just under a half hour. Within that span, though, I can't say that a lot of the songs were really so catchy. The riffing is more about legitimacy to the music's roots, and having a good time, rather than building strong melodies or sinister sounding picking patterns. It's a functional, frenzied Summer record spin. Higher speed dirt than "High Speed Dirt", for sure, and well suited to induce partying amongst the leather bound legions it likely targets. But beyond the nostalgia and ravishing production, the proof of concept (by Jove, they've got it right!), and the fact that I enjoyed this more than Raw Deal, it doesn't leave a terribly massive impression beyond a dozen or so spent beer cans by the roadside, and the skid marks on your SPEED METAL soul, whatever that means to you.
