Deep Machine - Rise Of The Machine (2014)

Deep Machine - Rise Of The Machine (2014)

Well the NWOBHM is making a comeback. So many acts that had moments in the 1980's are flying in to bomb the scene with intent again and here we have DEEP MACHINE. Now you could be forgiven for thinking all of these band have been dormant, for all this time, some have (SATAN / VARDIS) and some have not (DIAMOND HEAD / AVENGER) but here we are looking  at the new, first full length, album from DEEP MACHINE. They claim they survived the NWOBHM and without a deal as they were born in 1979 but except for the odd EP the 'deal' eluded them, but here to make up for that is ''Rise Of The Machine''.

They have respectable connective tissue…members being associated with Paul Di'Anno and his LONEWOLF project, ANGELWITCH main brain Kevin Heybourne joining for a spell and even TOKYO BLADE are connected here. So with all that in mind…they have some pretty cool credit on their side…but what of the grooves…what is in their? Let's march on to WAR.

9 tracks and opening up is “The Wizard”, thinking BLACK SABBATH? Well they were heavily influenced by IRON MAIDEN and JUDAS PRIEST (Early) and you can hear bit of both without doubt…but no SABBATH there. Yes I know lots of bands from the day had all that going on but some fought for their own individuality, while some were quite content to 'sound alike'. “The Gathering”, “I am everything”, a monstrous voice tells us, and then a cook riff with nice harmony, feeling nicely PRIEST, cool atmosphere, and feel, although old school of course, I think the music is more contemporary Metal in parts, whereas the vocals are where the dating comes in phrasing and lyrically this is the 80's again, for good or bad. “The Gladiator” comes thumping in with a “Love It Loud” drums pattern, some “United” touches too, going be a big old cloud clapper, chanter here. Well no huge 'all sing' chorus, but touched of the old Biff and SAXON as well and as a bonus, cool solo to boot. “Warhead” comes next but unlike the ugliness and power of VENOM, this is cleaner and crisp, nice upbeat pace track, reminds me of  a few bands actually. They shows they have been playing for a while that is for sure, performances is confident, production is clear and balanced.

Ah “Black Priestess” and a touch of acoustic into, some DIO-esque vocal shaping of Heavy Metal, you are so good to us lol, they even mention Satan and then it has a MAIDEN shape as well and man, it could be ANGELWITCH just missing Kev's voice. A cool song. Now “Hell Forest”, fuck yeah it is and it happily bounces along with classic rhythm pattern, a shout goes out “Hell Forest”, no one knows your name, and to be fair why would they unless it was something like Jeff or David and they took a wild guess. “Witchild”, the son of the devil, ah yes, this is probably the heaviest track yet, darker, I like this and it has a chant chorus for you too, so you get a shot at helping out too, bit of old wah wah and a tremolo dive as well, all has to be good with the world then. “Celebrophile”, doesn't need too much explaining, I mean you can guess the lyrical direction right? Fame and parasites…and well, bollox to be exact, X factor, bottom feeding, or needy people, a good old rocking beat and again some cool riffage going on, this band is very solid, so we draw to a close on DEEP MACHINE and there, well debut album, wow that is mad, 1979 – 2014, friggin A!!! lol…

“Whispers In The Black” and it starts with a whisper and opens like MAIDEN before becoming PRIEST, if they wanted a calling card, something to say this is who we are, then this track sums them up, classic. I would have said retro but these days not so good luck guys and Keep It True….lol…yes I aid that…ok…well if you don't already know…they just played, the masterful Keep It True Festival in Germany and did a great show. So let's have another album guys and this time and not in 35 fucking years later? I'll be fucking dead.
