Tristania - Rubicon (2010) FLAC

Tristania - Rubicon

Tristania is for one more time in the controversial eye of the cyclone. The first time was when Morten Veland ceased to be a member of the band. The second was when the charismatic and adored by the fans of the band (and of gothic metal as well), Vibeke Stene, left. But the flames of controversy hadn't risen that much, not until recently when their 6th full-length album came to the surface, the 1st with Mariangela "Mary" Demurtas on the female vocals. Yet, this isn't the only change on the line-up, only two of the founding members remain in the ranks of Tristania, Anders Høyvik Hidle and Einar Moen, although Osten still partakes as a guest vocalist which is very welcome, he has also written half the lyrics of the album.

First of all, I didn't enjoy that much the cover artwork, it's not the first time Tristania had a person-centered cover and I understand they wanted to promote their new female singer, but this time it seems kind of cliché with the lust-implied stare and stuff like that. Of course we won't stay on that, it's just that inspired and beautiful covers are always… beautiful covers! And Rubicon's cover ain't one.

Rubicon is one of those albums that a band composes after severe changes in line-up which prologues a more commercial course in the near future, may the times prove me liar, but Rubicon is a pre-commercial step for the band with Mary trying her best to fit in, something she succeeds in. One could say that she's present only for the interpreting part, yet, she plays her role in the song-writing and the lyrics as well, that being a big plus for her. Concerning her voice, it's beautiful, yes, she's talented, otherwise she wouldn't have been in a band like Tristania which focuses on this kind of interpretation. Yet, her voice is not that unique, you'll find quite enough sound colours as hers in the female-fronted metal scene. Vibeke made the difference, Mary doesn't, but I still like the variety of emotions she comes across and the way she presents them. She's not alone in her task, there are three more people accompanying her, you'll find Anders' limited grunts, Kjetil's clean, melodic (with a lunatic touch at times) interpreting, even Osten as well! I think the band did its best in order to make Mary feel like home and “protect” her, maybe more than needed sometimes.

In my obscure kind of mind, I find Rubicon being a concept album, the lyrics have a sense of war, at times straight-forward, at others in a more esoteric way, depicting the broken and twisted reality of a soldier, being not able to judge by himself but waiting for orders to “think”. There's a disgust on war, a cry upon non-breathing braincells, a denial on order, a will for planet earth to finally move on and leave the “burning in water, drowning in fire” past far behind.

My thoughts on the album are very positive, I listened to Rubicon a lot to finally conclude in enjoying everything it has to say, writing down my thoughts was not the most pleasant experience, I was feeling more confused than confident. And in the end, I like the utter harmony that lies somewhere between dynamic and fragile passages, with few outbursts that escalate the atmosphere, or more heart-rending moments that leave you speechless. The violin's role this time is more limited, but that's the magic about it, whenever it appears you appreciate it wholeheartedly, especially since its parts are very inspired and overflown with emotion. The riffing once again is very good, there are also gothic rock chords and of course acoustic harmonies, offering a variety on guitar expression, blending well with the rhythm section. The keyboards play their part as well, either having a more important role, or a more accompanying one, in terms of atmosphere, but sometimes they tend to “vanish” behind Mary's “walls of sound” and that's the part of the production I didn't like that much, sometimes she stands more than required in the foreground, overshadowing instrument(s) and/or co-interpreter(s), but that's probably part of Tristania's masterplan on how they view the album.

Coherence, yes, that's the magic word, the link of the chain between the compositions in terms of atmosphere and Tristania succeeded in it. The dynamic and melodic at the same time “Year Of The Rat” and “Protection”, the twisted “Patriot Games”, the shivering “Amnesia”, the fragile “The Passing” and the overwhelming “Illumination” could be the songs that appeared to me the most, but I liked the album as a whole, except for one or two (probably being “The Emerald Piper” and “Magical Fix”).

I found Rubicon a good album, others will hate it, others will adore it, others will find it a good one as well, all I know is that with more than ten spins it has grown on me and I couldn't condemn it, despite my first thoughts finding it quite mediocre. The band has been reborn, but has the phoenix risen from its ashes? Only time will tell.

"So you slipped into the fire, I was watching it transpire."

Krypteria - Bloodangel's Cry (2007) FLAC

Krypteria - Bloodangel's Cry

Amid the four year history of Krypteria, this is the first effort that can be qualified as a metal album, by any standard. Behind its conception is a couple of pop/rock albums with perhaps trace elements of what could be a slowed down power metal album, loaded up with heavy orchestration and electronic additives, but nothing that would scream substantial to the typical consumer of the post-Helloween scene. To be perfectly frank, "Bloodangel's Cry" is more of a straight up heavy metal album in the vein of early 90s Dio, though with an angelic voice that still carries the pop trappings of previous efforts.

In comparison to a number of similarly labeled acts such as Nightwish or Epica, this is much more along the lines of a straight away metal album where the guitars tends to be emphasized strongly, and with a much more streamlined songwriting approach. Barring the exception of "At The Gates Of Retribution", which ventures into something of a true Gothic/doom groove at a punishingly slow tempo and channels elements of early Within Temptation, just about every song on here takes on a very rudimentary formula, shifting from verse to chorus in a very predictable fashion and offering up the occasional lead break. Surprisingly enough, despite showing a wildly restrained approach to soloing, Chris Siemons proves quite apt at tearing up the fret board, almost like a modern answer to Craig Goldie.

For the most part, this album tends to come off as a stripped down version of Epica, particularly "Consign To Oblivion" in terms of its orchestral atmosphere and relatively mid-paced tendencies. The only thing that really doesn't command images of the musical collaborations of Mark Jansen and Simone Simmons is the laid back riffing approach, chugging in a very straight line grooving fashion and avoiding any of the elaborate thrashing gallops common to Jansen's repertoire. "Scream" and "All Systems Go" incorporate the occasional speed metal element, but for the most part this album tends to either coast in mid-tempo groove land or slow down to a ballad-like crawl. Nothing quite jumps out as being really gripping in the memorable department, though "Lost" puts in a familiar sounding chorus section that reminds of a number of 80s songs that I can't immediately recall, most of them by female fronted pop outfits, though this version at least has a chunky bottom end to it.

This is one of those albums that qualifies as adequate to moderately entertaining, but it tends to get old quickly as there are few tricks to keep one guessing after multiple listens. The lyrical content is fairly sappy, not to mention that the vocal work sounds frighteningly close to Anette Olzon, but this is actually a step up from what Nightwish is currently churning out. Generally Krypteria is defined by their inconsistency, but this is an example of them being consistent, and is one of the albums that would be worth getting, at least after hearing everything that Mark Jansen and most of what Sander Gommans has been involved in.

Lumus - Bacchus' Curse (2012)

Lumus - Bacchus' Curse (2012)

'Bacchus Curse' is one of our favourite release here at TSM. This CD is hugely enjoyable and features twelve new tracks. The band are from Portland and play dark symphonic /progressive neo-classical music not that far away from Epica, Dream Theater and After Forever. This album has all the fundamentals I like about this style of music and it's an album that strikes that chord with me for its rich diversity, fun energy and passion, it's one of those album that lulls you in from the first play, an album of epic creations that you will just get lost in.

A lot of care and attention has gone into the creation of the album, especially with the crisp slick production and eye-catching artwork. 'Bacchus Curse' has all the hallmarks that fans of this style of music will fully enjoy.

Charlotte Von Camp has an amazingly diverse vocal range and guitarist Dustin Behm is up there with the best of them, his energy purrs along next to Jon Lumus and his excellent violin work. Drummer Jon Spencer and bassist Sean McLaughlin hold the dynamics together, the whole band gel and when you listen to the album there is a huge sense of chemistry between all band members, live I would imagine Lumus smoke!!! They are a band passionate about their craft.

There is so much to enjoy from this album, from the awesome 'Scales Of Justice', through to the four part 'Bacchus' Curse' we are treated to an album that is powerful, romantic and full of exciting thrilling music, I'm really excited about this band, they perform the songs with that ever so rare fire that blazes out of all members musical charms, musically it's all here, there is something for everyone to enjoy, 'Bacchus Curse' is one of those albums I can play forever - enjoy folks!

Lumus is a Dark Symphonic Metal band from Portland, OR. Their music is heavy, dramatic, and melodically rich, while also paying great attention to storytelling. While the core of their music is a classical- metal pairing, they also draw frequently from progressive and world music to create their song and story. Their debut album Bacchus Curse shows a seamless blend of orchestral strings, with rich beautiful harmony underscored by heavy aggressive riffing and infectious offbeat rhythms.

Classic tales both fantastic and literary are told with top notch musicality and great dramatic flair.

Jon Lumus founded the band in late 2009 out of need to create darker, heavier music that still challenged his classical training and background. He put the word out on the internet and met drummer Joe Spencer, guitarist Dustin Behm, and bassist Sean McLaughlin in quick succession. Jazz vocalist Charlotte Camp completed the band in early 2011.

Battlelore - The Last Alliance (2008) APE

Battlelore - The Last Alliance

In early 2002, Battlelore released their debut album “…Where the Shadows Lie” on Napalm Records. Since then, the Finns have followed up with five more albums, including 2008’s “The Last Alliance.” Taking a note from the bards of yore, the Finnish fellowship channels the works of J.R.R. Tolkien into the audible world fantasy metal. From the setting of the scene by anthem-like opener “Third Immortal” to the solemn lamentation of “Daughter of the Sun” and the deeply melodic and shape shifting sound scapes of “The Star of High Hope,” “The Last Alliance” takes listeners on an epic journey through Middle Earth rivaled by few. And many artists in a number of mediums have tried - and failed - to pay homage to the late novelist.

Some of the vocals delicately put forth by Kaisa Jouhki sound like they were compressed all the way to Mordor and back again during the studio process, but the sweet innocence of her voice is not entirely lost and she’ll remind you that, in Middle Earth, there’s more to life’s journey than the demonesque orks of mind and those driven by obsessive compulsive delusions. That’s what Tomi Mykkanen’s there for. Providing both clean and growly vocals, the contrast between the two lead vocalists creates an intricate web of good/evil, love/hate, friend/enemy that, whether intentional or not, works. Factor in guest vocalists Janne Saksa and Juha Granberg into the mix, and the voices layered throughout the album are rich, and any shortcomings of each individual vocalist are quickly forgotten.

Delving into Tolkien’s vast mythologies throughout the lyrics, the septet further cements the author's place in literary history, but also makes their own mark. And even though there are plenty of sweeping orchestral keyboards and some clean guitar work, there’s still plenty of angst. Instrumentally, as with the vocals, Battlelore embraces contrast and the atmosphere it creates sounds like preparing for war.

Highs: The keyboards are very prominent, and carry a number of emotive melodies that compliment both guitars and vocals.

Lows: The guitar work is skillful and at most times catchy, but is too easily lost in the mix.

Bottom line: Even if you’re not a fan of Tolkien’s fiction, Battlelore will leave you transported.

Tristania - Mindwintears Angina (2005) FLAC CUE LOG

Tristania - Mindwintears Angina

Now, I am not really into the whole gothic metal thing, seeing as how I am not a Goth, but I really like Tristania's music. A while ago I got a hold of some of their albums, which I reviewed, but I actually had the pleasure of buying this album in the stores. When I looked on the Metal- Archives to see which album it was, it was put under Best of/ Compilation. But it is not a best of album. It is just Tristania's two EP's (Midwintertears and Angina) put on one cd. So I will take time to review each EP again, because it is a little better than the original EP's.

Midwintertears features three songs on the EP. Sirene is just an intro song that builds up to Midwintertears, and build up it does. One of the reasons why I like Tristania is because of their atmospheric music, which is also very dark and heavy. Midwintertears is more of a ballad, ending up at eight minutes. It features a very interesting keyboard section and of course the cool distortion that Tristania uses on guitars. The vocals also shine on this song, showing two kinds of growled death metal vocals and a very clean beautiful voice (at 4:20).

The next song is Pale Enchantress which is another long song ending up at six minutes. Once again keyboards, and actually piano, make this song what it is. The well done vocals and guitar riffs add on to make a very dark song. Cease to Exist is a bonus, seeing as how the first three songs end up on the album Widow's Weed. Cease to Exist adds onto this dark ambient feeling. This song brings a better vocal performance and is worth listening to despite it lasts a little over nine minutes long.

All the songs on the Angina EP make it on the album Beyond the Veil except for Saturnine. The first song is Angina, and you can tell there is a distortion change. It sounds louder and is a lot heavier. There is also a lot more emphasis on the vocals. The two pairs of growled vocals go at it and sing together, while the female vocal shows off her amazing talent. They even do some choir like vocals, which definitely add to the music. It also seems that there are some kind of violins, maybe that are distorted, could be my imagination though. At least these songs aren't as long as the Midwintertears EP songs.

The second song is Opus Relinque, the Radio Edit, whatever the hell that means. I doubt any radio station would play this, unless it was really underground. The piano plays a more important role on this song, as do the keyboards. This song is unique, and sounds like a mix between the Mortal Kombat theme and something from one of the Castlevania video games. The last song on this album is Saturnine, which again is a bit of a bonus. It is just a two minute instrumental, which adds very weird keyboards and snyth sounds. Its hard to describe this song, it is very different that is for sure.

So over all we have two good EP's slapped on one album. Nice to do when you can't find the original EP's on cd. Plus the production is better on here than on the original copy.

XIV Dark Centuries - Dunkle Jahrhunderte [Demo] (2000)

XIV Dark Centuries - Dunkle Jahrhunderte [Demo]

I received this with only a booklet and no tray inlay, so I’m assuming that it is a nicely printed demo .. or that I got gypped out of my inlay :^(. The booklet says it is a product of Moonrise Underground Productions, but that could just be XIV Dark Centuries’ “label.” Anyway, the heathen metal on display here is of a mid-paced, non-threatening variety. The vocals are blackish and doubled, one taking a lower death metal register and the other taking a mid-range black metal rasp. So, the vocals are rather tame, hackneyed and make no impression. The riffing is slightly melodic heavy metal with no drive – never does one feel the urge to bang his or her head or throw horns or whatever one might do when one is inspired to movement by metal. Not until the 6th song do I really get any indication, riff-wise, of this having heathen / traditional European leanings – when there is some actual folky / heathen melodies used. There are synths that are used, seemingly, to fill out certain sections, but the tone chosen is so limp that it adds nothing and truly only serves to make the song sound cheesy. I can almost get into the last song because XIV uses a semi-interesting chord progression and some epic parts with ..surprise .. a guitar solo, which fits somehow, but they throw that synth in there playing a simple and bad riff with that cheesy sound and it ruins everything. Some positives are that, for a demo (or whatever), it is recorded very well and everyone seems to have some minor skills with their instruments, as the playing is not sloppy. But, apart from the last song, this is just boring. There’s even a spoken word part (track 8) - RARELY do spoken word parts have a place in songs, and they have no place in this otherwise decent, clean, atmospheric song intro. Overall, a decent try, but with little success.

Tristania - Ashes (2005) FLAC

Tristania - Ashes

Tristania has been a different animal since their humble Doomdeath beginnings their current bid for Gothic Metal supremacy. On this release we see them reinvent themselves shaking off the shell of predictability and creating something truly unique and different.

The production is alright but could've been better. The guitars are moodier than they've ever been in this band before. Going from distorted to clean to acoustic seamlessly while mixing open chord to palm muting techniques effortlessly. As per usual there are no solos and a handful of leads. The vibe they create is very sad and lonely. The guitars aren't that heavy either, but they do have their moments. They are the atmosphere of this album.

The bass doesn't do anything revolutionary here aside from adding to the heaviness when it’s present. The drums are in the same boat; however they do add some interesting beats here and there. The keyboards don't add much in the way of atmosphere but they work when used.

The vocals are what we've come to expect with perhaps a few more clean male parts. The other male vocals are in a Blackish rasp. The female vocals are, as always, flawless as Vibeke effortlessly sooths and seduces the listener with her outstanding commanding vocal presence. The lyrics are of love and loss, and apparently the culmination of a breakup between two band members.

There is a very laid back approach to the song writing here. You can hear the heart break and turmoil of the two former lovers falling apart at the seams. The title is in homage to what’s left after a heated romance that has burned out. This was probably a difficult album to make given the probable intensity of the relationship both private and professional.

The songs have a strange yet beautiful atmosphere. The song structures are very original and only enhanced by Vibeke's hauntingly beautiful voice. There is a constant sorrow that drifts from song to song only to be replaced by a cautious rage or a bleak calm, as if lulling the listener into a false sense of security. This album isn't layered considering all that’s going on that’s a feat in and of itself. This is Tristania at their most stripped down and vulnerable, there is a lot of honesty on display here.

This is possibly the bands best album as well as it resurrects some of their some slower Doomed past while combining it with their newer sound. Most of the songs are fairly slow with a few more moderately paced entries. This is an album that is nothing short of epic, as with very little exception, all the songs can stand on their own. You can't help but listen to the whole thing from start to finish. It’s as though you get sucked into a swirling torrent of abysmal feelings and memories mixed with anxiety and the fear and dread of certain loss. This is by far one of the best albums of the decade.

Battlelore - Evernight (digipak) FLAC (2007)

Battlelore - Evernight

I admit that when I received Battlelore's latest release I felt obscure, I was in a condition of distress because I didn't have the best impressions from this band because back in 2003 I had listened to their second album, "Sword's Song", and I didn't quite enjoy it to tell the truth. Filled not with the greatest expectations I put the album in the cd player to realise that, oddly, as the songs were flowing the one after the other I was enjoying "Evernight" a lot, even from the first composition! A very pleasant surprise if I may say!

Well, Battlelore hail from Finland and during February, 2007 managed to return with their fourth full-length attempt through Napalm Records and all I can say is that the band worked really hard to accomplish a very good album. The very first impression on an album is being formed by the cover artwork and then the title and both cover and title pace beautifully together in this occassion! The artwork lies in shades of grey and shows a team of people in boats sailing down a lake amidst mountains and forests towards the unknown, probably soon to reach the point of "Evernight". As for the music it is hard for me to label it since it incorporates epic, folk-oriented, atmospheric and metal elements, one thing is for sure, the overall outcome is expressive, intense and emotional, making you care not about the categorization of Battlelore's music.

The band keeps an expressive balance between the vocals, the guitars, the keyboards and the rhythm section (which holds the compositions really well and lends the ideal groove) and all together create the ideal atmosphere. The guitar riffing is powerful and in some more melodic passages lie hidden some more folk-oriented ideas that blend beautifully with the charismatic female vocals and the keyboard chants, at times though the riffing steps behind and gives its place to some more acoustic passages that offer their own fragile beauty into Battlelore's compositions. The ethereal female vocals are just dreamy, enchanting, a bittersweet atmosphere of their own, imprisoning the listener under a violet veil of overflowing sadness, whereas the grunting male vocals are very good, could be better though, but they fit the music really well, lending a sharper edge to the compositions. Some polyphonic passages couldn't be missing since some passages ask for it so as the sound will be more complete and along with the floating keyboard melodies unleashing their either more symphonic or more fragile dreams the soundscape seems perfect.

The songs that managed to tear me apart and then synthesize me all over again from the start were the elegiac, emotional and intense "House Of Heroes", the epic and surrounding sadness of "Longing Horizon" and the outstanding "Beneath The Waves" with the dramatic epilogue of both the song and the album that leaves you asphyxiating in the depth of the sea in search for your dreams..

Concluding, "Evernight" is a beautiful piece of atmospheric metal generally speaking, an album that will accompany you in a world of fantasy and bittersweet beauty for a long time

Serenity - War Of Ages (LE Digipack) (2013) FLAC

Serenity - War Of Ages (LE Digipack) (2013)
Austrian symphonic melodic metallers SERENITY released their fourth full-length album entitled "War Of Ages", on March 22nd in Europe and March/April in the USA and Asia via Napalm Records. The follow-up to 2011's "Death & Legacy" was once again mixed and mastered by Jan Vacik at Dreamsound Studios in Munich, Germany. The cover artwork was created by Seth Siro Anton, who previously worked with SERENITY on their debut album. The band states: "It likely is his best work to date and the whole cover figurine is just as impressive as the limited-edition closeup." SERENITY also collaborated again with Oliver Philipps on arrangements and orchestration.
Says the band: "While staying true to all SERENITY trademarks such as symphonic orchestras, heavy rhythms, amazing melodic vocals and bombastic choirs, we also brought in some new elements in form of various new sounds in the SERENITY universe and a constant implementation of female vocals supporting outstanding singer Georg Neuhauser."
Since their second album, SERENITY has been including female voices in its songs, had different guests to perform them live and among them was Clémentine Delauney. Going on tour together, the band realized her voice, personality and stage performance was bringing something special to the band's universe and thought she should be present on the new record. The idea evolved with time… why not have a permanent female voice in the band? And it seems they had found the perfect one both on professional and personal levels. So it came up somehow naturally that Clémentine should not be considered "guest" anymore.
Clémentine Delauney is now a full member of SERENITY. Thus "War Of Ages" welcomes Clémentine's voice on lead, backing and choir parts, completing the music with a constant feminine presence.
Says the band: "The band has the will to make its music richer on the vocal side; this is a start of a new approach! SERENITY will explore and use the unlimited musical possibilities of those two outstanding voices, to start with, and 'War Of Ages' is the perfect transition record between what SERENITY was and what it will become in the coming years! We hope you share our excitement!"

Tristania - World of Glass (2001) FLAC

Tristania - World of Glass
In 2001 gothic Metal band Tristania released their first non-Morten Veland album, World Of Glass. Just looking at the song titles, one can tell they were a little upset with Morten leaving (take a look at the song titles, and interpret them in relation to a band's main songwriter, guitarist and vocalist leaving them), which pervades and pretty much makes World Of Glass.

It's instantly clear when listening to World Of Glass Tristania were incredibly pissed off at Morten Veland leaving the band (especially when his own band went on to suck...anyway). The emotional aspect of this record is the darkest of all Tristania, yet unlike the beautiful melancholy of say, Widow's Weeds, the emotions here are that of hatred, anger and depression. See lyrics such as 'the child in me just died/the scars in me will never heal' or 'this world/its evil ways/the pain that I hide' for evidence of this. The album is still a product of Tristania, meaning emotionally it is top notch; the emotional side always being moving and easy to connect to. This is perfect when you're in a sh*tty mood. However, some of the emotions are just too dark to be enjoyable (see 'Lost' and 'Hatred Grows').

The main aspect of the band has always been the vocals. Sadly, there are some sub-par performances on here along with the usual excellent ones. The other male vocalist (besides Osten) doesn't fit the slower passages; Vibeke's voice feels too harsh at points (see the start of 'Crushed Dreams', ugh); the harsh vocals sound computerised; all but one of the choir parts are boring (I don't know how they went from writing such awesome choir parts to such lame ones, surely they could have just repeated the formula Morten had). Otherwise we have excellent vocal passages as usual; the gothic choir passage at 4:20 of 'Crushed Dreams' is one of the best things they've ever wrote, everything in 'Tender Trip On Earth' rules, Vibeke's solo in 'Wormwood' is beautiful, and more. The core of the band still lives.

Musically the songwriting remains complex and interesting. My initial reaction was to think the band had lost the songwriting foundations Morten laid down (while Einar and Anders came up with the more complex detail), but foundation wise, the band manage to hold it together, if only just. The songs themselves are incredibly interesting and diverse, featuring dissonant violin solos, melodic black metal passages, oppressive choir sections, anthemic vocal triplets, sombre acoustic parts and more. Instrumentally the band are fine, with the one guitar being used efficiently and the drums sounding great as always.

Not the most consistent album, but enough greatness present to deserve a recommendation.

Battlelore - Sword Song (2003) FLAC

Battlelore - Sword Song

Tolkien-based power metal bands, while providing a source of extreme humor for the metal world, are often a sure bet for some enjoyable yet not overly spectacular music. Epic choir singing, symphonic keyboard effects, melodic instrument work, and enchanting vocals most often accompany the (cheesy) lyrical themes. Battlelores second album Swords Song Certainly has all of that. The music is epic with plenty of chanting and orchestral arrangements with some pleasant vocal work. Unfortunately, such a simple yet effective formula was not expanded upon here. For bands that play the described genre, boredom" is usually a difficult thing to fall to. While Swords Song has occasional high points, it is the text book example of poorly written music under said style. On the one hand, we have the incredible female vocals, which are very clean and soothing. On the other hand, we have the chugging riffs, which seem to add no dimension to the music, and seem oddly out of place with such accompaniment.

Heavy riffs and screaming can potentially be mixed to a lethal combination alongside symphonic mystical elements (see: Children of Bodom). The main downfall of Battlelore is the over-emphasizing of brutality instead of focusing on the incredible soothing factor of their music. The riffs couldve done perfectly well as a rhythm track while keys provided the main melody. However, their own rendition of harsh vocals" often outweighs the merits they earn. Tomi sounds like a less fitting version of Johan Hegg. His voice is a deep, unpolished grown that does not at all aid the melodic aspects of the music. Kaisa handles most of the vocal duty, which is the bands main redemption.

The music itself is an odd combination of brutal riffs and melodic synth work. Once the initial awkwardness of the non-complimentary elements, the music seems to flow adequately well with the occasional clash. Sons of Riddermark doesnt seem to make much sense musically, as does the confusing blend of the title track. However, the lack of consistency is battled b pleasing power metal excursions such as Khazad-Dum, one of the few tracks where Tomis grunts work well. Inconsistent is really the only way to describe this. High points and low points are mixed into an album with varying degrees of success.

Overall, boring" isnt perhaps the best way to describe this. Battlelore is an unusual band in their own right, and seem to fuse elements on the opposite ends of the metal spectrum. They strike some epic and highly melodic moments but bring themselves down by attempting to master the heavier side. Swords Song is perhaps and adequate mixture of the two, but it sounds as though Battlelore has yet to truly find the pinnacle point of their tolerable sound.

Tristania - Illumination (Europeon Edition) 2007 FLAC CUE LOG

Tristania - Illumination (Europeon Edition)

Illumination is the fifth full length release by Tristania, one of Norway's most prominent gothic metal bands. By now most people know the story; that Veland was responsible for putting them on the map, but decided to leave, causing them to go downhill, etc. While I'm one of those who believes he was the best thing to ever happen to Tristania, I'm also not about to discard their later releases as pure rubbish. No indeed, World of Glass, Ashes, and Illumination all offer something new and different, and all three are quality albums in their own right. With respect to Illumination; however, I feel they had a good idea in mind, but fell just a tad short on execution.

Throughout Illumination's running time it becomes painfully obvious Tristania was not shooting for complexion; instead, all songs have a much more slow, mellow, and simple structure. I'm refraining from the word basic because that is a major misnomer here. The reason behind that is simple; it all boils down to song structure. When approached from that viewpoint, there's nothing basic about the songs present on Illumination. The rhythm-setting drums, guitars, keyboards (What little there are) and bass all meld perfectly together to create simple yet effective melodies in each song. To reinforce this bold statement, I offer any track found at the last half of the album.

Vibeke Stene's vocals excited me most. She, like many other vocalists in the genre, has continued to evolve her voice in such a way that it effectively steers away from that quasi-operatic, choir like voice and actually starts to sing. I loved it dearly, to be sure, but it grows old after awhile, and there's no way in hell her old vocal style would fit with Ashes or Illumination. Songs such as Sanguine Sky, Lotus, and Mercyshide showcase her new style best; that hauntingly sexy voice you'd love to have sing you to sleep. While others, such as Destination Departure and Deadlands, focus more on her classic style of singing; that quasi-operatic voice you could picture... well, I'll spare you the innuendo.

The male vocals, done by Osten Bergoy, are also very well performed. My only disappointment is the lack of growling. Unlike Tristania's previous albums, growling is virtually non existent. The harshest male vocals hover somewhere between high pitched rasping, found on parts of Mercyside and The Ravens. However, I can't complain about the clean sections, especially on Fate, where they're above and beyond.

Both vocalists do their parts very well, but how about the lyrics they're actually singing? They carry the typical bleak and dreary gothic feel, but do they really hold up? I don't think so, at least with the first half of the album, especially on Mercyside, Sanguine Sky, and Open Ground. The verses and chorus' both feel like they're straight out of a b-side movie, no joke. I understand the emotional distress trying to be portrayed, but for Christ's sake ease up on the masochism! On the opposing end exist songs like Fate, Lotus, and Deadlands, which have your usual Tristania bleakness; the appropriate feel.. In fact, we're basically dividing the album in half: The masochistic side and the genuinely bleak side.

Hence why I say Illumination falls ever so short of the regard I hold Tristania in. This would be an exceptional release under your average band, but Tristania have been nothing but above average since their debut. I'm all for a change in style, especially to something slower and more dramatic, but not at the sake of musical perfection. They started out with a good idea, a good goal, but simply didn't make it for whatever reasons. Perhaps they'll nail it with their next release? Every band releases an album not quite up to par at some point, so why should they be any different?

Regardless, Illumination isn't something fans should ignore. Of the eleven songs present, Mercyside, Open Ground, and The Ravens fall below par, while Fate, Lotus, and Sanguine Sky stand out the most. Everything else is average; not amazing, but not as bad as those mentioned. Strangers to Tristania, or gothic metal in general, might want to be wary; this won't convert you to either.

Krypteria - In Medias Res (2005) FLAC CUE LOG

Krypteria - In Medias Res

Krypteria's In Medias Res has obtained a lot of negative reviews in the metal world and most of those don't do this album justice. I would like to cite several simple reasons and tell you about the true quality of this record and how you should take it.

First of all, this is no metal record and it might not be fair to judge this album from the restricted view of a pure metal maniac. This album is based on classic music and convinces with a lot of piano work, some decent orchestrations and the use of choirs. The few rock passages on this record are rather soft and melodic. They underline the orchestral elegance and the simplistic lyrics that mostly talk about fate, love and relationships. The main public of this record might be fans of soft rock ballads, medieval music or classic music. If this doesn't appeal, just don't try it and stop bashing the album in a non-objective way.

Second, many people claim that all songs sound similar on this record. It's true that the songs turn all around the same topic and have the same influences but we have some variation here from dynamic symphonic rock tracks like the opener "Victoriam Speramus", to modern electronic lounge sounds in the hypnotizing "No More Lies" or new age folk influences in "Quae Leatitia" or simple piano ballads like "Concordia" to calm and acoustic pieces like the closing "Carol Of The Bells". One notices that this is a rather calm and introspective record that should please to fans of bands and musicians such as Adiemus, Enigma, Enya, Era and Loreena McKennitt. This is an album for calm, romantic and meditative hours. If you're looking for energizing symphonic metal, you should check out the three recent releases of the band but definitely not the first two.

Third, many people say that the album is boring. They say that it has no engaging passages. This is not true because there are many catchy parts in almost every song and there are many potential commercial single hits on this record. Of course, this is an album for special occasions because there aren’t any rhythm orientated or faster tracks on the album and that's why not only many rock and metal fans quickly lose interest. There is some little variation within the record but the amount of diversity and creativity is not elevated enough to be a truly great conceptual record and project.

Fourth, critics say that the lyrics of the album are rather weak. This point is definitely true. The concept could have been more original and diversified than it finally is. It's a conceptual album about love and fate but it lacks of something outstanding. I still wouldn't say that the lyrics are completely missed as the simplistic lyrics fit to the slow pace of the record and give it a certain appeasing charm.

Fifth, some people judged the production of the record as weak. I would confirm that fact. Especially the guitars sound horribly weak, the bass guitar is almost inaudible and the drums are maybe the weakest point to listen up. But on the other side, the weak and inoffensive production fits quite well to the soft atmosphere. The question is if this effect was planned or not but if it was planned, I can't criticize this fact and must say that everything fits rather well together once again and one must see this album as a whole piece of art where everything is planned and done for a certain reason.

In the end, as you can see in all five points that I have discussed, every so called weak side of the record can also be seen as a force and fits well to the lyrics and the concept. I happen to be able to appreciate the record at certain times because I'm rather open-minded towards classic music and musicals. This record may not be a masterpiece or a highlight of its genre honestly said. There is no single outstanding track on the album. I feel a lack of passion and true emotions at some point. The sound could be more bombastic and epic for this kind of concept. Nevertheless, the album as a whole works quite well. This record is indeed a unique modern piece of classic music with rock and new age influences and should get more attention and respect than it has right now. This record should though get promoted outside of the metal scene and may please to fans of classic music, new age, soft rock, introspective pop and a mixture of all of this.

Theater of Tragedy - Velvet Darkness They Fear (1996) FLAC CUE LOG

Theater of Tragedy - Velvet Darkness They Fear

The following review concerns Velvet Darkness They Fear, the second album of the Norwegian Gothic ensemble Theatre Of Tragedy, released one year after their wonderful eponymous debut album. Velvet Darkness They Fear is a fine and strong continuation of the style the musicians brought to audiences with their first release, emotional and graceful songs in an atmosphere of doom and Gothic styles. Theatre Of Tragedy's sound is genuine, clearly distinctive from their colleagues of Tristania and Sirenia and more centered around mellow melancholy, in some ways more similar to My Dying Bride.

Velvet Darkness They Fear (what a title... in fact, Theatre Of Tragedy's titles always were well picked...) indeed has velvet darkness. The music does strongly associate with the feeling of dim candle-lit chambers with soft and heavy dark tapestries, with beakers of dark blood-red wine on the tables and radiant beautiful girls with prominent cleavage waiting for us to come and... drown in the bliss....

The album is a good and strong one of the era when Raymond still sang with fine growls suitable for the music instead of the carrot-voice he's using now. Liv Kristine is the queen of the album as she was also on the first release and remains later on Aegis (let's forget the sexy-bitch vocals on the infamous disco hit releases). The tender and slightly sad voice of Liv Kristine on Velvet Darkness They Fear is what makes the music most calming and enjoyable. She indeed is one of the loveliest singer in metal both in her stage presence and way of expressing herself in her songs.

The keyboard passages appear as the most expressive part of the instrumental construction and contribute a lot to the atmosphere. Some bands use more expressive and symphonic string melodies, Theatre Of Tragedy's trademark indeed is mainly piano, creating the distinct chamber music effect. A positive side is the old fashioned attitude and the lyrics in older English languages.

Now some prominent songs that can be found on this release, first of all, the beginning of the album with the title track as introduction and the second song "Fair and Guiling Copesmate Death" are both very suitable for opening the album in proper mood. My personal favorite is the German language track "The Dance of Shadows" or "Tanz der Schatten", one of the most haunting songs on the album and of all the music of the group. "And When He Falleth" is an interesting and thoughtful song with a pleasant dialogue from a play. "On Whom The Moon Doth Shine" is a song resembles the style of My Dying Bride but, of course, in Theatre Of Tragedy's own sauce with Liv Kristine as cherry on top of the tart.

Theatre Of Tragedy made a beautiful chapter in the history of Gothic music. The second part of their trilogy of three grand albums is an important piece of music and delightful for those who appreciate that style and the voice of Liv Kristine.

Stryper - Second Coming (2013)

Stryper - Second Coming

Stryper's 'new' release Second Coming consists of 14 re-recorded classics and two new cuts -- "Bleeding From The Inside" and "Blackened". Fans might frown at bands issuing re-recorded material, and it's a hard sell to people that already own the previous recordings, however this album serves a purpose. Second Coming is a way for the Christian rockers to gain ownership of the masters to these recordings -- they can control and license out the songs as they wish, or to whom.
These days, when albums like Second Coming see the light of day, there is usually a bonus disc included with an all new material. But as previously stated, only two new songs are featured on this compilation alongside concert staples like "Soldiers Under Command", "Reach Out", "To Hell With The Devil", "Calling On You", "Free", "Sing A Long Song" and a number of deeper cuts. Surprisingly the ballad "Honestly", one Stryper's shining moments and one their most popular songs, was left out of this collection. Also missing is material from Against The Law -- though it didn't sell a lot of copies when it was released it did contain a few gems.
The new recordings on Second Coming have a consistent, rawer, and livelier sound than their slick and overly produced predecessors. Case in point, "To Hell With The Devil", "Soldiers Under Command", "Sing A Long Song", and "The Way" have more bite than the versions previously available. Second Coming showcases the guitar duo of Michael Sweet and Oz Fox's stellar, razor sharp and energetic musicianship. Visual time-keepers Robert Sweet and Tim Gaines prove they are no slouches either as their dynamic teamwork lowers a 'Godly' bombastic boom. Stryper's trademark three part harmonies remain intact throughout Second Coming and Michael Sweet's pipes sound ageless.
The two new tracks, "Bleeding From The Inside" and "Blackened", sound closer to the classic Stryper sound than anything heard on the Reborn or Murder By Pride albums -- though when compared to the newly re-recorded classics the new tracks fall slightly short of their mark. Having said that, Second Coming is worth checking out if you don't have the classic
