Orden Ogan - To The End (2012) FLAC

Orden Ogan - To The End

As the power train keeps on rolling, we come to the new release by Orden Ogan. Considered a heavyweight power unit in some quarters, this German act received their share of accolades for 2010s Easton Hope, which some consider a minor classic of sorts. Because of the strength of their last release, I’m sure the band felt some pressure while writing the follow up. To that end…To the End is pretty much a stylistic counterpart to Easton Hope with all the same power metal bells and whistles. They traffic in a variety of Euro-power that borrows heavily from early Blind Guardian (think Somewhere Far Beyond era) and Rage (think Perfect Man era). As things spin along, you’ll also hear hints of Sonata Arctica and even Symphony X crop up in the song structures and playing. At the end of the day though, it’s a near 50/50 split between Blind Guardian and Rage influences. Therefore, you can expect tons of fast, zippy and catchy melodies, bombastically huge, heavily layered vocal harmonies and fair amount of melodrama. These boys know how to craft a big sounding tune even if they aren’t always great tunes. They also write some mighty infectious, sticky choruses that defy expulsion from the brain. With all these gifts, it seems a bit surprising the end result isn’t stronger this time.

“To the End” introduces strong Rage influences through the fast, zippy riffing and structure and when the chorus arrives, its old school Blind Guardian at their best (i.e. big vocals with tons of layering and backing choral accompaniment). It’s like a who’s who of premier Euro-power and its indisputably well done and slick, but it feels a bit “by-the-numbers” and there’s something missing. Maybe its too generic or just too much a hodge-podge of better bands, but it seems a bit soulless, despite a lot of great guitar-work and solos. However, if great guitar playing made great music, Annihilator‘s discography would be solid gold.

Orden Ogan come into their own with the super catchy “Things We Believe In,” which builds to an enormously anthemic, flag waving chorus that any power metal band would kill for. The Blind Guardian-isms run amok on songs like “Land of the Dead,” with its mega-layered choral bombast; “Till the Stars Cry Out” with its epic vocals that can only be sung whilst standing on a mountain brandishing a sword and a barely dressed maiden; and the memorable gallop of “Dying Paradise.”

The best moment for me personally comes with the moody, melancholy semi-ballad “The Ice Kings,” which has convincing and sincere vocals without all the overblown layering, polish and glitz. Its just a stripped down, raw, emotional song with great chord builds and choices. It really stands out amongst its over-inflated neighbors. Also worth mention is the surprising blend of djent riffing, Symphony X melodic runs and extra impassioned vocals on “This Land of Ice.”

Things take a turn for the boring on the album’s back-end, and “Mystic Prophecy” is bland, while “Angels of War” is decent, but drags on too long. Closing ballad “Take This Light”  is sickenly sweet and cheesy with lyrics like “you can run to the place where the dolphins swim and the sun will shine warm and bright down on your skin.” Wow, just wow. That one should have left off the album with extreme prejudice.

One of the big issues for me are the vocals of Seeb Levermann. The man can sing and at times, showcases some major range, but something about his voice is very hit or miss for me. He shines on “The Ice Kings” and “Things We Believe in,” but on a lot of the material, he leaves much less of an impression, despite the heavy layering his vocals receive (such choral layering wears thin on me after a while too). Likewise, the riffing from Seeb and Tobi is often too generic and Euro-power 101 for my tastes. The guys can play, but too often they stick with tried and true zip riffs that are far too similar to those of their main influences. Still, the album ends up partially salvaged by a keen sense of melody and catchy songwriting.

While it’s a noticeable drop off from Easton Hope, To the End is worthwhile and has a few moments of greatness scattered about. I think the band is a bit overrated to begin with, but I do recognize their talent and their strong points. I likely won’t spend much time with this apart from the few truly special cuts, but I can still see this going over huge with fans of Blind Guardian style excess. Decide where you stand and sample accordingly.

Crom - The Fallen Beauty (2003) EP

Crom - The Fallen Beauty

Let's play the "Guess the style" game, ok? Alright. Label name Deathlike Sound reminds me of the Deathlike Silence label of the murdered Euronymus, former leader of Norwegian underground Black Metal legend MAYHEM. The cover has been drawn by Kris Verwimp, whose works normally can be found on the heavier side of the spectrum and the logo of CROM in its kind also looks rather like Black Metal. So do CROM play Black Metal? Not in the least!

The Landshut based solo project of Crom (only supported by a session drummer) draws its influences from somewhere (almost) completely else and the sound of the first three songs already hints at what the fourth one, "Man Of Iron", then fully confirms. "Man Of Iron"? Hold on, there was something… Exactly, BATHORY. The epic BATHORY as we (or at least I) know and love them from such outstanding albums such as "Hammerheart" or "Twilight Of The Gods".

The own compositions of CROM follow in pretty much comparable waters, mostly slow paced, with melodic guitars, an epic atmosphere, some acoustic guitars and the BATHORY like chants in the background. And the voice of Crom? It is completely clear, very nice, rather in the deeper end of the spectrum and at least one class better than the one of his big influence Quorthon.

The opening title track excels with this atmosphere right from the start and "Vengeance Part 2" continues this almost seamlessly, even though the speed is increased during the middle part, and here the drums sound somewhat synthetic, which does not take away from the song in any way, though. The more than ten-minute "The Wanderer's House" in big parts remains slow-paced, but through that builds up such an epic mood that the ten minutes are over before you really notice it. Here, too, the epic and big melody lines stand in the foreground, which together with the vocals and lyrics create a very Viking-ish atmosphere, conjuring up pictures of scenes from the Northlands before your mind's eye.

The closing "Man Of Iron" indeed is a BATHORY cover version (off their 1996 "Blood On Ice" album), which is not far off the original, but has one quite delicate difference: the vocals. As said before, Crom has a considerably better voice than Quorthon and therewith adds to this classical song, good one.

Surely BATHORY still are a few steps above CROM, but the Swedes already have a few more years under their belt and in their style (the epic one, of course) there surely is place for another band of this kind and if you take into consideration that "The Fallen Beauty E.P." is only the second EP of the Bavarian, then we can expect quite something from CROM. Even though the BATHORY influence is very, very strong and its shadow might be looming too big for some, I have big hopes for CROM and hope for new material soon as the songs already have been recorded in early 2002 and the homepage talks about an upcoming album called "Vengeance". Go, check it out!

Tyr - By the Light of the Northern Star (2009) Limited Edition

Tyr - By the Light of the Northern Star

While on their innumerable raiding and pillaging voyages, the Vikings must have picked up two vital skills: the ability to come up with an eternity’s worth of tasteless war lyrics, and the skill to continually write delectable metal until no one really cares about the lyrics anymore. Like a clean-vocals incarnation of Amon Amarth, Faroese band Tyr have cranked out another Viking power metal record, and for the life of me I can’t stop listening.

Even past the laughable lyrics about swords, war, and heathenism, Tyr still embody stereotypical Viking metal. These Faroese go shirtless, braid each other’s beards, and wear leather armor. But from the hooky power metal of “Ride” to the beer-chanting of “Tróndur * Gøtu,” By the Light of the Northern Star is just ridiculously entertaining. The vocals (especially the omnipresent gang vocals) can verge on pretentious, but it’s all for the sake of good fun…and beer. On “Hold the Heathen Hammer High” the riffage topped by the slurring gang vocals is more fun than an ale-soaked beard, and Korpiklaani would be proud of the battle cry “By the Sword In My Hand” and the epic “Into the Storm”. Both the guitar-backed religious chorale of “Turið Torkilsdóttir” and the title track are epically beautiful. Even the solos are excellent.

The music may be simple, there’s no over-technical guitar wankery or keyboards, but that also means that the album is gimmick-free and completely true to form. Tyr veer from the heavy (“By the Sword In My Hand”) to the melodic (“Turið Torkilsdóttir”), but every song is full of mead-driven spirit and incredibly catchy hooks. No grand awards will be given to By the Light of the Northern Star, but fortune prick me if it isn’t a longboat-load of awesome.

“By the sword in my hand, I will conquer the land. I will decimate and decapitate those who question the sword in my hand!”

Mythery - The Awakening Of The Beast (2013)

Mythery - The Awakening Of The Beast

There may not be a beast, but MYTHERY certainly are awakening on the scene. Danish Symphonic / Progressive Metallers, with Mighty Music, will be launching their debut, “The Awakening of the Beast”. Formed in 2010, this band brought together Jazz, Classical and Indie Rock musicians, with melodic inspirations and symphonic elements a la DREAM THEATER and NIGHTWISH.

Upon listening to “Another Universe” and “Epoch Of Destruction”, there seems a bit of KAMELOT meets Indie Rock. It is particularly evident in the keyboard and tribal drum intro of “Another Universe”. Having a violinist as part of the band could be a forthcoming trend. ALPINE FAULT fans will identify with that statement. The keyboards intro to “The Crusade” does bear some resemblance to a Holopainen melody. The listener will note an interlude of a soprano tessitura in this track. It sounds a bit thin and could use either more support from the singer or merely more amplification in the studio. She has the range in her and it would be nice to hear her a bit more prominently.

The last five tracks actually compose the 30-minute title track, “The Awakening of the Beast.” It is at this point the listener might notice a nod to a DREAM THEATER-esque influence. In “Part I”, all of the instrumentalists form a symbiotic dance. It is 100% instrumental and heavily features classically-trained violinist, Michala Høj. Her performance is unwavering in skill and passion. If you are a fan of crossover string quartets such as BOND and EKLIPSE, you may feel at home with Ms. Høj’s performance on this album.

“Part II” leads us onward with a rapid firing of guitar riffs, echoed by the drums. This track brings us a conversation between the indie vocals of Laurits Emanuel and a rhythmic spoken, yet harsher, counterpart. This seems a subdued intro that could prepare future fans for growls and death rattles they would hear in heavier metal. There’s a lovely melodic interplay of keyboards and violin afterwards, ending with a guitar melody that seamlessly carries over to “Part III”. But wait for it… Some heavy riffing between violin and guitar with a ramp-up to harsher vocals are coming. The beast is indeed awakening here.

“Part IV” greets the listener with great dissonance. There’s an emotional disturbance in the force here that creates a bit of dread just before a fevered violin and Rock guitars have their say. The cycle completes with a return to the initial dissonance. Laurits Emanuel has a somewhat breathy, yet ominous uncertainty that is reminiscent of Chris Thile in some of his NICKEL CREEK and solo work. “Part V” begins with adagio guitar and violin with a mere brush of cymbals. It evolves into what seems a love song to a dark master, a “deceiver of our hearts.” It is befitting of an end to the beastly suite.

MYTHERY is certainly creating something new from their influences, training and tastes. This young band has made quite a first impression that most certainly does not sound like a first album. I highly recommend this album as a means for metal evangelists to bring their indie, Jazz, Classical and Rock fans into the fold. Go forth, dear brethren and brethrenettes. Order a copy of this album and share the MYTHERY.

Delain - Interlude (2013)

Delain - Interlude

Finally, I get to review my first Delain album. And as the press release states, "It is the perfect introduction to the world of DELAIN and the starting point to an emotional and bombastic journey!"

Delain is a Dutch symphonic metal band formed in 2002 by former Within Temptation keyboardist Martijn Westerholt and vocalist Charlotte Wessels. The band includes: Sander Zoer, on drums; Otto Schimmelpenninck van der Oije, on bass and backing vocals; Timo Somers, on lead guitar and backing vocals; along with Martijn Westerholt, on keyboards; and Charlotte Wessels, on lead vocals.

The band has released three albums, 'Lucidity', in 2006, 'April Rain', in 2009, and 'We Are the Others', in 2012.

I have read several reviewers rave about Charlotte Wessels' voice, and on the opener, 'Breathe On Me', I now understand the adulation. She has the perfect delivery. Soft and in control, without the shrieks that drive your ears to turn down the volume. She whispers and flirts with her voice and captures your attention immediately…and never lets go. Her looks are enough to attract attention and her voice fits that portrait perfectly. The accompanying heavy drums, bass, and roaring guitars support her vocal power well. This is a great single which will be heard on many tours in the future. Off to a great start.

'Collars and Suits' and 'Breathe On Me' are both new songs, so I have to say that my introduction to the band is already a nice surprise. 'Collars and Suits' is another showcase for Wessels' voice. Her quiet control and confidence shimmers as the explosive guitars, bass, keys and drums shower her vocal presence with mountain scaling grandness.

'Are You Done With Me' is from 'We Are the Others'. However, this is a "new single mix". Wessels' covers the break-up of a relationship well as she declares her determination with elevated vocals, to carry on…strong and proud.

'Such A Shame' is Delain's cover of the famous Talk Talk penned song. It has been covered by many brilliant artists, but Wessels' adds her own innovative vocal touch. The guitar work is simply amazing, as are the drums and keyboards. A definite keeper.

'Cordell' is a Cranberries track that Wessels delivers with fine accompaniment of acoustic guitar from Timo Somers. The piano support is also excellent. Wessels provides a clean sound matching the richness of the original version delivered by Dolores O 'Riordan.

'Smalltown Boy' is a Bronski Beat original, which Wessels gives a female vocal spin to with excellent delivery. The power guitar, bass, and drums provide more strength and confidence to the story than the original. They add some strings to balance the power, but Wessels' confidence still shines through. The acoustic guitar is excellent.

'We Are the Others' is by far Delain's best written song. The lyrics and story line are an anthem to all those outside the norm, which as they say means all of us. The piano and strings give this a more emotional, even acoustic, i.e. 'ballad' feel than the original. The song carries a strong message beyond its great melody and musicianship. As children join in with Wessels you can't help but sing along. The album's best track…by leagues. Make sure to check out the official video for the track.

'Mother Machine (live)', opens a set of six live tracks with a very cool slow drummed and percussion opening. The crowd cheers as Wessels and band take the stage. The keyboard and dramatic opening are perfect. What comes next is less powerful. I guess this is their ode to 'Welcome to the Machine'. However to me it sounds like many of the heavy metal tracks I have heard one too many times before.

If 'Mother Machine' was less fulfilling, well then 'Get The Devil Out Of Me (live)' completely failed to launch. The keys are worthy though.

Maybe they should have completed the album before the live tracks. 'Milk And Honey (live)', doesn't lift me back after the last two live tracks. The keys are simply amazing, and Wessels voice is worth every minute of sound, but these tracks just don't have the lyrical or melodic power that the openers provided.

Yes, the keys and surrounding sound effects are epic and start 'Invidia (live)' with majesty. But then the same ole heavy metal crush and awe ensues. Still...this is the best of the live tracks.

'Electricity (live)' starts slow and full of more of those excellent keys and surrounding sounds. The heavy guitars, bass and drums are great. Wessels voice is powerful, but the lyrics fall flat after the brilliance of the first couple of tracks on this album.

'Not Enough (live)' is another heavy metal rocker full of fantastic keyboards, lead guitar, bass, and running drums. For me, it is enough…the thrill is gone.

"Interlude" is a blend of brand-new songs, special versions and mixes of popular Delain tracks, covers, and some live tracks. Nice concept. And I know the cost of producing separate albums of each content is high, but in this case, I think they could have made a much more powerful statement with the covers and new tracks alone.

Aoi Teshima - The Rose ~I Love Cinemas~ (2008)

Aoi Teshima - The Rose ~I Love Cinemas~

Aoi Teshima has had a busy 2008 releasing two albums. The first is this one, entitled “The Rose ~I Love Cinemas~” which takes eight well known movie famous songs and then gives them the Teshima treatment.

Opening with title track “The Rose” we’re treated to the soft elegance of Aoi’s voice. In harmony with a gentle piano, you can imagine this being what heaven’s waiting music would be. Also it must be noted that the album is completely in English and the elocution is near perfect.

Next up is a beautifully relaxed version of “Moon River” with just vocal and acoustic guitar which is just dreamy and is followed by the serene “Calling You” which hushes you to sleep with a lullaby even with its downbeat nature.

“Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head” is possibly the only song that doesn’t work perfectly. While trying to turn it into a swing song, the lack of drums or upbeat bass really hampers the overall mood. It’s still a nice version but with percussion it’d have lifted it up. Then we have the song that I’d been waiting for Aoi to sing since I first heard her voice. “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” is typically stripped down and bare and also beautiful however I surprised that the tempo was faster than say the Eva Cassidy version. I’ve often thought of Aoi’s vocal being the Japanese Eva and so I’m surprised they didn’t milk this song for every second it plays.

“Beauty and the Beast” follows from the Disney film and this is definitely softer and just as effective as hearing Mrs. Potts sing it! VGM fans will notice Fabian Reza Paine from FFX-2 Piano Collections as the pianist. An excellent choice of song with a nice instrumental section which is completely unrushed unlike the previous track.

“What is a Youth?” is the song with the most backbone to it. Its great to hear something a bit more upfront and powerful. This has a downbeat feel to it with a rousing middle that you want to shout out and is a welcome departure from the rest of the album. “Alfie” returns to the piano/vocal ballads that work so well before you end on an acoustic guitar version of “The Rose”.

Fans of her first album will not be disappointed however if like many, you were looking for a bit more variety and versatility you will find that this album is even more streamlined to one sound than Earthsea was. “The Rose” plays to all of Aoi’s ballad strengths to make a completely weepie / relaxing experience but there’s more in the box if she’d only be allowed to let herself go. Japan’s Eva Cassidy? You bet!

Evan Brewer - Your Itenerary (2013)

Evan Brewer - Your Itenerary

After, a two year wait from Evan Brewer stellar album 'Alone' we have "Your Itinerary".
There is much to say about this record. Unlike his previous album "Alone" he has brought more of a band experience to the record. Partnering with such names as Navene Koperweis (ex- Animals as Leaders) and Paul Allen such to name a few. There combined work brings us a experience which blows the minds of listeners to even higher place.

The elements on this album are varied and interesting. Varying from play styles such as jazz to blues and even some electronica. These styles are woven gently by the hands of masterminds proficient on their particular instruments. The additions are superb and bring dynamic feeling to each individual song on the album. There is so much experimentation that individuals who didn't enjoy this previous work 'Alone' will immediately enjoy this album.

Evan's bass work is excellent and more intrinsic to the flow of the album. His bass is essential as it brings complex melodies to the table. As a catalyst in this regard; leading his colleagues follow him upon this journey. On tracks such as "Microscopic Scale" and "Another World" shows you what this album is. A brilliant experimental ride across the passageway to your ear drums and ultimately to feelings of euphoria.

Overall, I did enjoy this record and the beauty it has presented me. My only negative is that with a masterful ride such as this record presents to the listener is it cut by it's very short run time.

Tyr - Land (2008)

Tyr - Land

Taking its name from the one-armed god of war in Norse mythology, Norway's Tyr embraces Viking metal — but in a way that sets this gang-singing quartet apart from many of its warrior peers. Seeking to enlighten as much as entertain, Land (Tyr's third album) offers a combination of English and traditional Faroese lyrics. The folk-like opener "Gandkvaedi Tróndar," for example, is a poem about a Faroese chieftain who fought for independence. Who cares if non-Faroese-speaking headbangers can't understand it?

Land is punctuated by the 10-minute "Brennivín" and the searing 16-minute title track — one of three English titles on this 10-song disc. But not every one of them is a gung-ho tune ideal for hoisting a glass of cold, frothy brew and then chugging it. "Valkyrjan" mellows listeners with simple but appealing keyboard and acoustic guitar structures, while "Sinklars Vísa" — a traditional Norwegian song based on the true story of Scottish mercenaries killed when trying to disturb the peace in Norway — boasts an arresting a cappella intro that will blow your mind. When was the last time a Viking-metal band did that?
