Animals As Leaders - The Joy Of Motion (2014)

Animals As Leaders - The Joy Of Motion (2014)

Since releasing their self-titled debut in 2009, Animals as Leaders have been at the forefront of perplexing, instrumental extended-range progressive metal. The group's lead guitarist, songwriter and artistic visionary, Tosin Abasi has seamlessly become an icon among guitar nerds and enthusiasts alike as his unique approach to extended range guitars has changed and some may even say revolutionized the instrument. Indeed, Animals as Leaders unique approach to their craft has been as influential as it is aurally impressive. With their newest release, The Joy of Motion, the group finds themselves at something of a creative crossroads, blending their signature brain-melting, low register polyrhythms with a myriad of electronic effects and heroic eight-string leads.

While Animals as Leaders successful debut record focused generally around jaw-dropping dramatic song-structures, climaxes and resolutions, The Joy of Motion favors more textured and subdued soundscapes. Shockingly barren, but not entirely absent are the furious sweep picked arpeggios and dazzling tapped licks contained in the group's prior studio efforts. In there place rests a more focused songwriting approach. The album's second track “Lippincott” shows some of the most obvious signs of song-writing maturity as it flows and alternates through punishing rhythms and melodic, string-slapped passages. The primary major-tone tinged “Another Year” is also deserving of praise as the track arguably flows better than anything else the group has done, an impressive feat to say the least. I'll save describing the final three tracks as they end record on a cohesive, cool and awesome note.

Like any worthwhile progressive release, the goods reveal themselves after repeated listens. The production on The Joy of Motion is unarguably the best in the bands catalogue. Never before has the group sounded so organic, trading in their usually highly quantized drum acrobatics with a real, natural sounding kit. Drummer Matt Garstka makes his presence known as his drumming is easily on par with prior percussion savage, Navene Koperweis. On each of the album's twelve tracks Garstka steals the show, displaying his virtuosity through an abundance of drum fills and off time poly-meters, seamlessly pulled off with professional groove. The Joy of Motion features enough song-writing variation to remain an entertaining listen all the way through, a feat many of their peers simply cannot claim. While The Joy of Motion is yet another successful notch in the group's belt, it isn't without its share of faults. Too often does the band fall back on their signature polyrhythmic grooves to get through some of the songs and the added emphasis on electronic instruments sometimes can get in the way of the instrumental proficiency instead of complimenting it.

The Joy of Motion is easily the group's least immediate release to date, and repeated listens are required in order to get the most out of it. The twelve tracks presented all hover around the four-minute mark giving the record an almost block-like, predictable and claustrophobic feel. Gone are the short and sweet romps that would often help maintain the flow of their prior records, an amenity that's missed when it's gone. Regardless, The Joy of Motion is at its perennial best when melody takes a front seat opposed to monotone rhythmic patterns. With The Joy of Motion, Animals as Leader's have released a record that they can certainly be proud of and is essential listening for fans of the genre and is definitely worth checking out for casual fans of instrumental music.

Nocturnal Breed - Napalm Nights (2014)

Nocturnal Breed - Napalm Nights (2014)

Napalm Nights had quite the benchmark to live up to: Fields of Rot, its predecessor, is one of the finest examples of modern thrash metal done right, with its ferocious punky attitude and riffs galore. Just one listen of "Wicked, Vicious & Violent" or "Iron Bitch" will most certainly solidify that point. Seven years in the making, Nocturnal Breed’s latest album isn’t as immediate, fast, or menacing, but it does have one very important thing in common with the band’s 2007 outing: both records are quality to the bone. There’s no magic, no hidden tricks responsible for Napalm Nights's greatness – the group behind it simply knows how to write effective thrash metal. Whether they’re going two hundred miles per hour or are cruising around in their deathmobile, you can expect quality madness to ensue either way.

Compared to Fields of Rot, Napalm Nights is a different animal. While the former had a visible punk aesthetic mixed in, Nocturnal Breed’s latest offering is a much more rock ’n’ roll drenched record. Lightning quick riffing and the in your face bite which governed before have largely been abandoned in favor of longer, mid-tempo songs that take their time to build up. The best example of this is the behemoth-sized title track, which at one point doesn’t seem to be hurrying anywhere with its plodding main riff, but then out of nowhere a sweet solo erupts (on multiple occasions) and the whole face of the track changes. Make no mistake, just because Nocturnal Breed have slowed down doesn’t mean the material on Napalm Nights isn’t as quality as that found on Fields of Rot. The new album shows a different side of the band, one that glorifies devilish rock 'n' roll, but at their core Nocturnal Breed are the same thrashheads intent on wreaking havoc. The weapons in their arsenal have changed, but the mentality of the soldiers is the same.

Commendably, in their transformation, Nocturnal Breed haven’t forgotten about those who appreciated their previous, more stinging style of play. Tracks such as "Speedkrieg" or the aptly titled "Thrashiac" still thrash with the best of them, and most songs have sections where the band suddenly accelerates. The guitar sound is less metallic and punk as the rock 'n' roll influences shine through, but the required attitude is still there. Frontman S. A. Destroyer howls and shreaks as powerfully as he did seven years ago, and from the cover art to the lyrics, the themes haven’t changed for Nocturnal Breed – only the times. The main agenda of the band has clearly stayed the same: rock hard or don’t rock at all.

Napalm Nights is a great effort from these Norwegian thrashers. They have changed up their style in the seven years that separate their two latest records, and while this has resulted in a slower and less reckless approach to thrash, the songwriting chops and mean attitude of the band haven’t vanished anywhere. If Fields of Rot was a full on assault on the listener, Napalm Nights is a tactical, cleverly planned attack – both have their advantages in different situations. What the album lacks in speed, it makes up in compositions and savvy. There are enough intricacies on every track to keep both thrash lovers and casual listeners of heavy music appeased, and most importantly, longer songs equals more metal – something these guys know how to play. Like the presence of a seasoned veteran in crunch time, Nocturnal Breed’s presence in the current landscape of thrash metal is invaluable.

Secret Illusion - Change Of Time (2014)

Secret Illusion - Change Of Time (2014)

Returning for their second project, Change of Time, is Greek band Secret Illusion, and they're doing it own their on, with no label support. But somebody might want to pick them up for international distribution as the band and album are quite good.
Secret Illusion Change of Time Band Photo

Change of Time is basically European melodic power metal, yet more akin to their Scandinavian peers due north. Familiar elements are found throughout like the brisker pace of power metal with Point of No Return and Beauty. But also spry guitar solos abound with some neoclassic flair, notable in Perfect Fantasy and Love Lies, and monsterous within the instrumental title track. Alternatively, they are slight in a song like Winter Poem.

Winter Poem is also an example of the significant flourish of synthesizers across this album, giving this song and Words Left Forgotten, by example, a range from the calm of simple piano to the symphonic granduer. (Actually, the keyboards play a significant part in most every composition, yet in good balance with every other instrument.) Also within these songs Secret Illusion use a children's choir in moments. Finally, vocalist Dimitris Giannakopoulos has a strong clean voice, with some feeling of melancholy, but sometimes is overcome by the music. Nevertheless, for pure melodic power metal Secret Illusion's Change of Time is on target and quite entertaining. Recommended.

Shear - Katharsis (2014)

Shear - Katharsis (2014)

Shear is a metal band from Helsinki, after their EP “In Solitude” (2009) and the first full length “Breaking the Stillness” (2012), they are back with a new work called “Katharsis”. They define their music ‘multifaceted metal ‘ and with this album you will understand what they mean.

The magnificent intro “Katharsis” opens the door of this album, “Last Warning” is a speed track and everything works good, excellent is the guitar solo and the powerfull voice. “Home” is a power metal song like the catchy “Heaven Into Hell” that takes us really in a fire heaven, the rhythm of “Hollow, Black & Cold” and the final chorus and talk part at the end make it a unique track. The ballad of the whole album is “I Care”, a really sad song with rhyrhmical changes. “A Hopeless Tragedy” starts with a good part of bass that then makes combo with the guitar and drums, we can definite this track as progressive. The soft keyboards intro in “Whispers Follow You” is followed by a fast continuation, this is a song that come into your mind easily.

In “For the Restless” the voice becomes more aggressive, with the progressive “Not Myself” we are almost at the end of this album, “Turmoil” the last track is surely the best of the whole album, the sound remind me a bit from Circus Maximus. This is an album that comes immediately to the listener, recording and mixing are made very good, and they are really great musicians. The voice of Alexa sounds pop-ish in the middle of this power-progressive-symphonic metal. Listening to this album will open the door of your mind to discover something of pretty different from the usual symphonic metal.

Rating – 80/100

Dark Forest - The Awakening (2014)

Dark Forest - The Awakening (2014)

From the band name, you might expect something bleak, grim, and frostbitten. From the album title, you might expect a cornerstone of early feminist literature. What follows is something that surpasses both.

Joined by a new singer and a new guitarist, Dark Forest (UK) present their third album: a power-ish love letter to the classic heavy metal sound of the late '70s and early '80s. They have chopped out some of the thrashier elements of their previous albums; The Awakening seems to have a more streamlined sound, but it still bears the mark of nostalgic longing.

Guitar harmonies seem like a dead art nowadays. They were cool when Thin Lizzy used them, but now they are a dreadfully overused way for Joey and Fritz Metalcore to 'liven up' some mundane riffs and seem slightly more musically literate. Too many folks these days think that guitar harmonies have an infinite novelty, when in reality they achieve new heights of banality by using them as a crutch. Dark Forest (UK) are not, fortunately, counted in this group. There are some sublime and well-constructed harmonies to be found on this album - they are bursts of Iron Maiden-y musicality, not rancid garnish.

There is a folksy feeling at times - not because of any obvious traditional elements in the music, but because of the earnest reverence for their musical heritage. This is heavy metal in the tradition of Iron Maiden, Witchfynde, Satan… That point in history when heavy metal, early power metal, and NWOBHM ran in the same circles comes howling back into view on songs like the title track and "The Last Season." Dark Forest (UK)'s music is similar to other revivalists like Wolf or Holy Grail, but with a slight lo-fi quality that makes it sound more genuine.

The Awakening opens and closes very strongly, ending with the powerful "Sons Of England" and leaving an aftertaste of subtle dolor. There is a certain dramatic intensity about this album, but at the same time it is a great piece of good, clean heavy metal fun. Anyone looking for some old school heavy/power metal should look no further.

AXXIS - Kingdom Of The Night II (2014)

AXXIS - Kingdom Of The Night II (2014)

With a career spanning 25 years, German Heavy Metal / Hard Rockers AXXIS have come around with a sequel to their first full length, "Kingdom Of The Night". It's a real wonder why these metal veterans are as underrated as they are. The sequel is as Glam and driving as the genre gets, sure to draw in fans of EDGUY, GAMMA RAY and SCORPIONS.

The title track is a solid opener, with synth and guitar-driven riffs reminiscent of modern EDGUY and lyrics that are the coy kind of cheesy that you can't help but enjoy. Listen on if you are enjoying the screamingly obvious domination of catchy and melodic hooks, since they dominate this track and the majority of the album. "The War" is a driving, mid-tempo groove with ingeniously creative riffs, again with the band's ever-present catchy chord and melodic progressions. Again, this is another track which may be respectfully compared to EDGUY, particularly their slightly more progressive "Age of the Joker". I thoroughly enjoyed that album, so I stress this to be taken as a compliment!

"Soulfire" is a more upbeat track that blends slightly more aggressive riff construction, with liquid, melodic and easy-listening verses, and terrifically powerful choruses, where Bernhard's seemingly safe voice displays an impressive range. This track especially conveys the pop-infused infectiousness of 80's Glam with modern Power / Heavy Metal. "Bites Inside" display a somewhat heavier side to the band, whilst still keeping the immortalized sound of Euro Metal alive and shredding. What really drew me to the track were Bernhard's vocal similarities to Austrian vocalist Georg of SERENITY; both have a graceful, catchy voice with unique, melodic inflections that are capable of surprising displays of power.

AXXIS is certainly a band to fit right in with the famous cadre of German Melodic Metal bands aforementioned, with whom they have been known to share various stages; tried and true, Euromelody-infused Heavy Metal.

Metalsteel - This Is Your Revelation (2014)

Metalsteel - This Is Your Revelation (2014)

There have been very few bands that really, really bring a smile on my face while listening to an album and also make me realize how much I miss having a long hair while head banging. When was the last time you thought, that "Yes this album will be a classic 20 years from now!”? I'm not exaggerating, but "This Is Your Revelation" by Slovenian Metallers METALSTEEL does exactly that and more. With a band name like METALSTEEL and an experience of 4 studio albums behind them, expect nothing but unadulterated anthemic old school Heavy Metal with shades of Thrash and Progressive elements in them. Very often one is fooled by cheesy band and album names, but not here. With accelerating ear pounding riffs and equally rhythmic drums and screaming vocals, one can clearly see the influences of old school heroes like IRON MAIDEN, DORO MANOWAR, ICED EARTH, AC/DC, U.D.O and likewise. The beauty of "This Is Your Revelation" is that while it makes its intentions clear, it brings in enough variety like the occasional acoustic guitars to avoid sounding monotonous and unidirectional like in the soothing “Call Of The War". “Man Of The 1000 Faces” has to be my favourite from this gem of an album, for its sheer catchiness and it's free flowing music.

The guitar riffs are so beautiful that your head will bang automatically even before you realize. The drums and bass follow the guitars and vocals as is with traditional old school Heavy Metal. Even the guitar solos are all perfectly placed and leave no stone unturned. The commanding vocals of Beni Kic speak about inspirational lyrics and the society in general and are a perfect album for anyone looking for a catalyst to get through their day. The production is top notch and leaves no stone unturned.

This is an album that will not only end up in my year end top list, but a certified classic in my opinion. Take my word, just go listen to it without any second thoughts.

Azoria - Seasons Change (2014) Japanese Edition

Azoria - Seasons Change (2014) Japanese Edition

I suppose that the moniker AZORIA choice has something to do with the name of his leader Alex Oriz some kind of an anagram or something like that but it also holds a biblical meaning. His last band attempt under his own pseudonym, ORIZ has failed to be successful, so he changed the whole game and he reform a new project with a bunch of talented players and many friends helping in the lead vocal role,

This is the debut full-length from AZORIA, after AEON ZEN / SILENT VOICES / STAMINA / CLOUDSCAPE or SIGNUM REGIS, it’s a new trendy behavior currently popular in melodic Power Metal, which is to recruit different singers instead of searching and finding a new frontman. Originally this idea is a good manner to reinvent a new sound and bringing a lot of variety, but this early enthusiasm could be diminished by the weak genuine spirit of such enterprise, the impersonality revealed by most using such method and also the lack of durable impact, with AZORIA‘s “Seasons Change“, we are exactly in the same condition, a mix bag of style ranging from Scandi AOR to regular melodic Power Metal to Symphonic Gothic Modern Rock in the most ordinary form.

The casting of guest is exciting and well done, featuring a good sample of the diversity of the hot Swedish Metal scene. Let's go, first starting with the greatest: Tommy Johansson (REINXEED / GOLDEN RESURRECTION) & Mark Gunnardo (NORDIC MIST / JAWBREAKERS) for the traditional high pitch rendition, the best of all Mike Andersson (FULLFORCE / CLOUDSCAPE / SILENT MEMORIAL / PLANET ALLIANCE) belting out for another beautiful testosterone tenor trick in an almost heavenly perfection… Another good performance in his very own way for the title track, is provided courtesy of Mikael Dahl from CRYSTAL EYES, but unfortunately since then the whole things are going downhill in the songwriting quality. “When You Sleep” is the only song with a female vocalist, Matilda Eriksson’s smooth voice compliments the song well but the track itself is pretty unspectacular like a poor NIGHTWISH / AVALON generic undertake, but the worst is yet to come with the two tracks that features on lead vocals, one time KING DIAMOND / MEMENTO MORI / DREAM EVIL drummer,  the inimitable (and this time uninspired) Mr. Snowy Shaw in a very uninteresting couple of lackluster tracks and even finishing this short album on a bad note with the horrific cover of ALPHAVILLE’s “Big In Japan”, luckily only available in the Japanese Edition.

With very talented individualities, very eclectic never boring but nor original or genuine by any means, it has its moments with sometimes a sensation of an emotional rollercoaster emotional but not a real focus on a specific characteristic formula and a strong feeling of banality in the end…. Nothing exceptional if you ask me, Mighty Liljegren Records / Doolittle Group from Sweden has already provided tons of better releases.

Vanden Plas - Chronicles of the Immortals Netherworld [Path One] (2014)

Vanden Plas - Chronicles of the Immortals Netherworld [Path One] (2014)

The masters of heavy rock operas are back. Vanden Plas, from the city of Kaiserslautern, Germany, have been steadily grabbing dully deserved attention of late with their unique theatrical approach to music applied to progressive power metal. It has been 4 years already since they released the addictive concept album The Seraphic Clockwork. They took things even a notch farther in terms of theater performance by teaming up with fantasy writer Wolfgang Hohlbein to interpret his Netherworld novels on stage in the form of a rock opera for a few selected shows in Germany. With the bombastic title of Chronicles of the Immortals: Netherworld (Path I), this is the studio recording of the first half of those songs.

In case you aren't yet acquainted with Vanden Plas, they are Andy Kuntz on vocals, Stephan Lill on guitars, his brother Andreas Lill on drums, Torsten Reichert on bass, and Günter Werno on keyboards. That's right, the lineup hasn't changed since the band's inception in 1990, and their chemistry has always been one of their strengths.

So what besides the breathtaking artwork are you to expect? Even though the album is divided into 10 tracks, it is and feels like one 55 minute theater composition. Grand piano opening as well as recurring themes and melodies cement the feeling. However do not let the "theater" sticker worry you the music is as heavy as their previous albums. The killer riffs remain very present as usual, courtesy of Stephan Lill and his trademark striking guitar sound. Andy Kuntz' skillful vocal interpretation is rendered even more remarkable when coupled with outstanding female vocals or a choir on some memorable tracks such as "Misery's Affection" and "A Ghosts Requiem".

The album provides ample room for the keyboard work from Günter Werno to shine as it never did before. I feel like Andreas Lill has grown even more behind the drum kit, or at least, he has been allowed to contribute a lot more than usual to the songs. And all this is happening while omnipresent and dynamic bass lines from Torsten Reichert make "Chronicles of the Immortals" a progressive masterpiece.

So that leaves little to discuss further, Vanden Plas have just managed to outdo the awesomeness of their previous efforts with this album, which was no easy task. If you like progressive music of any kind and/or heavy metal, this will probably exceed your expectations. Stay tune for the next chapter Netherworld Path II, which is scheduled for a 2015 release date. In the meantime, enjoy this enthralling album without moderation.
