Arven - Black Is the Colour (2013)

Arven - Black Is the Colour

Yet another female-fronted symphonic power metal band? Frankfurt's Arven does it better, five times better. Arven consists of five young gals at the forefront, and the only male forced behind his drum kit. One guy and five chicks. Don't go there, dude.
Arven Photo

Arven: black is not always the colour.

Fundamentally, Arven has the whole symphonic power metal sound nailed down pretty tight. With the gothic overtones and Carina Hanselmann's mezzo-soprano to soprano voice, they easily get the Nightwish, Epica, Edenbridge crowd. Yet with the strength of their power metal they could easily pull in the male side of things by appealing to fans of Blind Guardian or Sonata Arctica, for instance.

After these things, the real questions that remains is Arven doing anything novel or better than their peers. Not necessarily, but what they do, they do very well. They've got a bit of the Celtic folk flair with the instrumental Cercle D Emeraude; a traditional duet with Stefan Schmidt of Van Canto on The One For Me, very nice; My Darkest Dream is the song with the best rock groove and single potential; Believe, Don't Look Back, and Black Is The Color are solid mainstream symphonic power metal. In other words, as said before, they understand their chosen genre quite well and craft some very good songs. If you like the style or you're a fan of the aforementioned artists, you'll be pleased with this album.

Divided Multitude - Feed Your Misery (2013) FLAC

Divided Multitude - Feed Your Misery

This fifth album for the underground Norwegian Prog / Power Metal kings starts with a short Flamenco guitar and compass handclap pattern intro named “Esperanto”, luckily DIVIDED MULTITUDE will quickly manage to change everything soon with a real Metal riff and a double kick onslaught, they set the power to maximum heaviness mixed with sheer elegance, indeed since then the remaining 10 tracks on the album are pretty sharp with furious drums and almost Thrashy rhythmic guitars but moderated with ultra-catchy vocals in the real Scandinavian method. I like to think of them about as an heaviest version of CIRCUS MAXIMUS (“What I See”), applicant of a few hyper challenging Melodic motifs with a stunning Schizophrenic vocal rendition, indeed Mr. Sindre Antonsen alternates brilliantly between "testo-tenroic" multi layered singing like Jekyll & Hyde, in the great PRETTY MAIDS & Ronnie Atkins tradition with a two-faced styled that switch from velvet to sandpaper in the same sentence.

Of course all the players are ultra-competent, Christer Harøy (PS: his other band with his brother Rayner called TEODOR TUFF is also warmly recommended by yours truly) is a solid guitar player but stay quite discrete leaving much room to another essential strong element in their sound: the fantastic yet subtle Eskild Kløften, who provides some fine effective performance in multipl(a)ying synthetic ambient waves & Progressive Rock keyboards.

In this genre the songwriting should be uselessly complicated, well it’s not exactly the case with “Feed On Your Misery”, but don’t get me wrong please, there is plenty of weird or cerebral moments as some strange structures mixed with passionate and luxurious arrangements quite rich in complexity with an average over six minutes in length without never sounding hermetic or rigid.

The smartest cuts like the title track “Feed On Your Misery”, the delicious “Crimson Sunset” or the dark “Vicious By Heart” are also pretty much influenced by early QUEENSRYCHE or CRIMSON GLORY with some modernized vocals taken from the inherent omnipresent obvious reference while speaking about Prog Metal singer, the soulful, the one, the only: Sir Russell Allen (SYMPHONY X / ADRENALINE MOB) himself (“Scars”).

Finally, the best comparison could have been PAGAN’S MIND meets ANUBIS GATE meets CONCEPTION. I already said it, I will say it again: “Feed On Your Misery” by DIVIDED MULTITUDE, that’s Scandinavian Melodic Prog at its Best.

Pessimist - Death From Above (2013)

Pessimist - Death From Above

The artwork is so typical and the title, silly and banal as hell. Even a cursory glance at the pointy [also terrible - AMG] band logo should immediately hint at which metal sub-genre this band belongs to, but hang on for a second and hold back that derisive snort: this is actually pretty good shit!

As far as Happy Metal Guy is concerned, this record sounds more interesting than the upcoming Sodom album. Pessimist has not been around longer than that similarly war-obsessed, Teutonic thrash giant (and Death from Above is only their second studio album), but they sure know how to breathe a little new life into the overplayed sub-genre in a way that Sodom does not seem interested in trying out. Basically, it’s how Pessimist plays a brand of thrash metal with progressive tendencies: individual song lengths can go upwards to slightly over 7 minutes, electric guitar motifs are typically elaborate, electric guitar solos sound expressive and fleshed out, and there is no abusing of uncreative “thrashing attacks” to serve as bridges between the main sections of every song.

Pessimist 2013The chemistry between the lead and rhythm guitars creates some really mesmerizing moments, especially the ones heard in the introduction of “Feindfahrt” and lead-up to the climactic guitar solo of “World of Pain”. For a really fantastic display of rhythmic groove, check out the bouncy “Death From Above”. For fret-board-destroying shredding, check out “The Fallen”. Also, the mellower songs such as “Antisocial Bastards” and “The Last Bastion” feature serene guitar strumming that wouldn’t sound out of place in the soundtracks of old ‘Wild West’ movies.

As if imitating the eerie calm of the first nightfall of war, there is even an instrumental track (“Behind The Veil”) that begins with peaceful strumming before breaking out into a furious thrash attack. Aren’t you glad that this instrumental track does not seem to sound like one of those filler songs that seem to be occupying space on a disc simply for the sake of fulfilling that cliché of having at least one instrumental track on any heavy music album?

While it’s a pleasantly surprising find and surprisingly pleasant album to listen to, Pessimist’s Death from Above still doesn’t best Havok’s Time Is Up as Happy Metal Guy’s hitherto favorite re-thrash record in terms of sheer musicality. But it’s still a commendable effort nonetheless, because in this day and age, making re-thrash sound intricate and exciting is already a difficult feat to achieve in itself. If Pessimist ever considers exploring novel but not overtly wild lyrical themes in future (e.g. the joys of living, social harmony and the art of sunbathing), Happy Metal Guy is optimistic that they will stand out even more in the China-sized thrash metal crowd.

Royal Hunt - Show Me How To Live (2011)

Royal Hunt - Show Me How To Live

Doing progressive power successfully has got to be one of the greatest feats in melodic metal. Either one of the genres is not being nearly represented enough in the mix, so the title is misleading, or they're merged in such a way that both the uplifting harmonies of power metal and alien qualities of prog metal get left out of the equation, leaving us with a boring, sterile product. Royal Hunt is one of the many bands that failed doing this the right way.

Of course, it's easy to blame it on poor band chemistry when you look at the band's Metal Storm page - pretty much the only constant member is the keyboardist, guitarist and mastermind André Andersen, and the list of guest, session and former musicians is vast enough to be compared with Haggard's lineup. But for a band that released a truckload of albums, with a lot of prominent members, I frankly expected better ideas and realization. What we have here is a typical "symphonic" parade, with almost zero prog, most sounds emulated from keyboards, a lot of choirs, forced catchiness (as in: it's not really catchy, but we repeat it a lot of times) and a pretty uninspired band fronted by DC Cooper supporting that impression. The fact that they're not actually playing progressive power but rather symphonic power wouldn't be unsettling at all, since they wouldn't be the first band that mislabels themselves, if only the end result was more pleasing.

I had the pleasure of listening to DC lending his voice to Shadow Gallery on "New World Order", a track from their glorious Tyranny, and I held his singing abilities in very high esteem until I heard this album. He sounds very dry and I cannot help but wonder how does a good vocalist manage to be this unconvincing. But he isn't the only one - almost everything here sounds sub-par. It is symphonic, but not epic; old school power metal, but doesn't invite you to sing along; the musicians are fine, but sound very bored, and they aren't even supported by good production. This is doing music just for the sake of doing music, but people are pretty much eating it up because it's "old-school" and the band is acclaimed.

When you hear young guns such as Shadowside making small steps with huge albums, or renowned progsters such as Pagan's Mind switching genres and being incredibly good at it, it makes you wonder how on earth are these exhausted bands ever gonna match that, and you understand why is the collective metal community slowly losing interest in power metal - the good releases don't come often and don't come from places you'd expect them, so people get bored of looking. Maybe this is not as bad as it seems to me, but I've heard this type of metal being done a thousand times, and I can't say I enjoyed it a lot even the first time around.

As melodic fire-starters Eden's Curse continue to flounder under the weight of their lengthy vocalist search, step up Code Of Silence, who, featuring Eden's Curse bassist Paul Logue as their main songwriting source, although he doesn't actually feature as a member of the band, unsurprisingly plough a similar, if slightly less histrionic furrow. The band came about when Logue and James Murray (who does play bass in CoS) decided to put together a hard hitting melodic outfit, bringing keyboard player Scott McLean, drummer John Clelland, award winning guitarist Ben Randall and onetime Adagio and Takara frontman Gus Monsanto, together to become Code Of Silence, a band who sit comfortably between Blue Murder, Eden's Curse, Tony Martin era Sabbath, Dokken and Power Quest.

The Crusades and Knights Templar are a subject matter often plundered in the world of rock (none better so than the stunning Vox In Excelso by Saracen) and again it is an area that Code Of Silence ably use as lyrical inspiration. The themes lending themselves willingly to the chest thumping atmosphere created on Dark Skies Over Babylon. Randall really is an impressive find, infusing an infectious sense of energy and urgency into the music, with his fiery fret pyrotechnics being of the highest calibre, while his rhythm work is exemplary. However he is one of many stars on Dark Skies Over Babylon, with the keyboards adding depth and clarity to the vision, while the thunderous bass and precise percussion holds it all together. Add to that the expressive voice of Monsanto and Code Of Silence really do have all the ingredients to make a hefty mark and go the distance. "Black Abyss", while less insistent than most of the offerings illustrates that not everything has to operate at full velocity, Randall adding a little bluesy authority to the mix (his playing has a huge dollop of Thin Lizzy/Tygers Of Pan Tang/Blue Murder man John Sykes about it), while "Tame The Tempest" infuses more melody to an ever shifting tempo to offer up another flavour. However there's no denying that it is the foot to the floor numbers such as "Bitter Sweet Paradise" and "Knights Of The Crimson Cross" where Code Of Silence really start to rise above the countless bands operating in this genre.

Hopefully Logue and Eden's Curse can get their act together soon and grace us with the next instalment in their band's evolution. In the meantime Dark Skies Over Babylon by Code Of Silence is an album that fans of atmospheric, energetic, melodic hard rock shouldn't be without.

Twins Crew - The Northren Crusade (2013) FLAC

Twins Crew - The Northren Crusade

Sometime after their second EP, Twin Demon, in 2009, Sweden's cut their first album Judgement Night in 2011, which I didn't catch (nor did the band send me as they did with the former). Now they're back with their sophomore effort, The Northern Crusade. Whatever has happened over the past four years has been good for this band.

Melodic power metal is rather ubiquitous these days thanks to it's nearly 30 years of existence and bands continuing to keep the torch burning. Basically, a band either gets it or they don't. Some bands think throwing in clever things into the mix, like death vocals, harsh thrash, or a modern hardcore style, makes it somehow better or novel, when it often doesn't. They don't get it. Alternatively, it can be derivative but still on target akin to great ones from Iron Maiden to Helloween to Edguy. These bands get it. This is where Twins Crew fall in the genre with classic melodic power metal.

Again, not knowing the nature of the previous album, The Northern Crusade is certainly a leap ahead from their earlier stuff. This has all the things that makes for great traditional 'keep it true' power metal: twin guitar leads, galloping but sturdy rhythm section, and strong, sometimes soaring, melodic vocals all sweetened by the correct amount of keyboards. The strength of this album is the simple fact that all these elements are strong. However, conversely, whether its because of the digital promo copy, the mix seems a little soft. And also Twins Crew can sound quite derivative, easily mimicking early Edguy on Blade and Heaven Awaits. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. Across the entire album you get what you get, and I repeat myself, strong traditional melodic heavy power metal. Easily recommended.

Royal Hunt - X (2010)

Royal Hunt - X

This is ROYAL HUNT’s tenth album already? It’s hard to believe, but when you think about it, the band released their first album all the way back in 1992. They should have chosen a better name than “X” though, especially since so many bands have done that before them.

This is the second album to feature former Yngwie Malmsteen singer Mark Boals. He did a fine job on their previous album and is one of several great singers that ROYAL HUNT has employed over the years. Their final album with D.C. Cooper, “Paradox,” was one of my favorite albums of all time. Their final album with John West, “Paper Blood,” was excellent as well. However, I hope Boals stays on for at least another album because this one is disappointing.

In the months before the album was released, main composer André Andersen stated in several interviews that the band was attempting a more 70s rock sound on this album, which excited me a bit because I love rock music from that era, despite this being different from ROYAL HUNT’s traditional melodic metal sound. However, the results were something more like an 80s rock sound.

The guitars are buried, aside from showing up a few times in admittedly solid solos. I admire Andersen’s restraint with the keyboards, but all of the instruments are so simplified that there’s not much to stand out besides Boals’ vocals. Boals does a fine job with the material he’s given, particularly on “End of the Line” and “The Well,” but unfortunately he cannot make this a magnificent album on his own. There are still a good amount of pleasurable songs, but nothing approaching the heights that I know this band is capable of.

“X” shows ROYAL HUNT breaking relatively new ground, but it sounds much different than advertised. There are still some fine moments, but overall this is somewhat disappointing. This is probably still worth hearing, it just won’t end up on my best of 2010 list any time soon.

Alpha Tiger - Beneath the Surface (2013)

Alpha Tiger - Beneath the Surface

Move your skinny asses over, Enforcer, there’s a new sheriff in Retro City and the name is really shitty. I know a pussy cat name like Alpha Tiger won’t inspire much faith amongst the angry metal masses, but trust me, the music more than makes up for the cheese-tastic moniker (which belongs on a third-rate Japanese video game where you brawl through a zoo and up the food chain). This is unapologetically old school, traditional metal taking its cues from early 80s American acts like Agent Steel, Armored Saint, John Arch era-Fates Warning, Sacred Oath and Crimson Glory. There’s some NWOBHM in the sound too, but that takes a distant backseat to elements of South American power metal like Viper and Hibria. While the retro rock on Enforcer‘s latest opus left me nonplussed, the sophomore outing by these German rockers sounds fresh and energetic with tons of air-raidy vocals and savory, metal-as-hell noodling alongside bombastic soloing. They totally nail the mood and feel of the early 80s American metal sound, to the point where its impossible for me to listen without picturing my high school era bedroom where all the metal magic happened (oh Doro, only you understand me). This has more balls than other retro/classic bands like White Wizzard and Steelwing and much less of a slavish Maiden fixation. Maybe that’s why its hitting home so damn hard.

Lead-off “The Alliance” is loaded with beefy, muscular riffing like classic Armored Saint and the outstandingly vintage vocals of Stephan Dietrich really blow the roof and doors off. He channels the spirits of John Arch, Midnight (Crimson Glory), Lizzy Borden (same) and Andre Matos (Viper/Angra) as he soars high above the riffature like an iron eagle (of steel). The song screams 1985 and reminds me of long forgotten acts like Savage Grace who tried to fuse traditional metal with early speed metal (do yourself a favor and track down their After the Fall From Grace album). Better still is “From Outer Space,” which is fast, frenzied and loaded with aggressive riffing, whammy dives and vocals that just keep getting higher and higher until even Testiclees the Mighty begs for mercy. As soon as I heard the excellent, glass-shattering chorus, I was reminded of Viper‘s criminally underrated Theatre of Fate album and the way those songs were so irresistibly catchy and loaded with stratospheric vocal hooks.

“Waiting for a Sign” is mid-tempo and more restrained, but no less enjoyable since its rich in vocal melodies, crisp guitar harmoniesAlpha_Tiger and a satisfyingly dramatic, memorable chorus. The title track borrows a page from Riot’s immortal Thundersteel material and slays with in-your-face riffing, thunderous drums and commanding vocals. The chorus hits hard and stays with you  for days. Speaking of well done choruses, “Along the Rising Sun” boasts another winner. It’s such a basic song, but so catchy, it makes simplicity a real virtue and provides air guitar worthy riffs throughout.

The back half of Beneath the Surface is a departure from the quick strike, super accessible fare on the front half, and focuses on longer, more complex material where the band shows their technical chops. While not as instant, after a few listens, the deeper stuff really opens up and becomes intriguingly solid and engaging. “Rain” is very quick, has oodles of wild guitar solos and Dietrich’s vocals again remind of Andre Matos’s work in Viper. The chorus is great and the playing is top-notch throughout. “Crescent Moon” bears strong similarities to the material on Fates Warning‘s Awaken the Guardian and Dietrich’s vocal gymnastics are very John Arch-like and therefore, awesome (especially around the 2:50 mark).

While “Eden Lies in Ruin,” seemed a bit directionless on the first few spins, it grew and grew on me. I really like the similarities to ancient Queensryche and to Lethal‘s classic Programmed opus and it’s awash with classy guitar work and excellent vox. The only dud is closer ”We Came From the Gutter,” which feels like filler and suffers from an awkward, cheesy chorus.

alpha-tiger2The big draw here are the vocals by Dietrich. Whether he’s in John Arch or Andre Matos mode, he tears it up on every damn song. I know the whole high-pitched vocalist thing can get tired quickly, but the man has real talent and he isn’t screaming. His voice is very pure and clear and man, he can get up there into the Torsion Zone! When you pair his pipes with the impressive, frequently catchy axe-work by Alexander Backasch and Peter Langforth and some quality writing, really good things happen. Not to be overlooked, Dirk Frei slaps a mean bass and his little rumbles and fills add a lot to the melodic mayhem. Last things last, the production is perfectly stuck in the early 80s and sounds exactly like the shit I was spinning on vinyl and cassette back in high school.

Beneath the Surface is a big surprise and a highly addictive, throwback rocker with above average writing.  I’m really digging this, despite suffering from terminal retro fatigue syndrome. I’m not cured (you know, because its terminal), but I’m feeling a whole lot better. Check this thing out ASAP. Thundercats HO!!!!

Monsterworks - Earth (2013)

Monsterworks - Earth

It's not often you hear a band that combines Thrash, Progressive, and even a little Black and Stoner Metal into a single album, where each song takes on a different genre trajectory. London-based MONSTERWORKS have done that with their new record, “Earth”, and for such a seemingly underground band, is masterfully recorded and mixed. Overall, the song writing is mature, complex and unpredictable, showing clear progressive influences, whilst still retaining the fury and bombastic riffage of Thrash. Each of the eight tracks has something unique to offer.

The opener, “From Dust and Gravity”, almost screams BLACK SABBATH in its instrumentation, a mid-tempo, driving track, which adopts searing, screechy vocals from Jon, which may end up grating on one's ears. I am unsure whether his vocal style suits this particular track, but the musicianship and lyrical ideas completely make up for it. Loud and heavy, as an opener should be. “Late Heavy Bombardment”, is that not an amazing title? The second track contains an odd mix of PANTERA and IMMORTAL, combining the groove-driven riffs of the former and the crushing blast riffs of the latter, and features some excellent screams by Jon, who's vocal capabilities are proving to be highly versatile. “The Last Universal Ancestor” opens with a beautiful acoustic passage, and royally shocks ones ears by instantaneously commencing a crushing thrash passage that rambles on for the rest of the song; and is cleaned up by my favorite guitar solo on the album. In “Oxygenation” I am hearing a few more classic nuances, but also starting to sense a strong Prog Rock presence. Jon's vocals take a surprisingly pleasant turn with some excellent clean singing. The influences – they are simply everywhere and come from everywhere. “Powered by Fate” takes an extremely heavy turn with prominent chugs, and a return to some menacing screams, another beautiful guitar solo, and, wouldn't you know it? A complete 180-turnaround to a soft fade-out. “Bookended By Extinction”; I am hearing one, two, three, four.. I've lost count of how many genres this one, two-minute song contains. I hear Black, Grind, Punk, Thrash and Prog all at once; the song is an utter roller-coaster and has us begging for more. That's the only problem with this song; it needed to be longer; I wanted to hear more. “Aeon of Man” experiences more of a clear musical flow; a strongly-Proggy acoustic intro, that leads slowly into some screamed chugs, screeched thrash, all the while accompanied by an acoustic track and very profound lyric writing. For the closing track, what would complete a Progressive-Thrash-Blackened-Death album more than an… Almost ten minute song? “Earth” sums up the entire record, with clean transitions between heavy metal riffs and beautifully clean acoustic passages; am I hearing some “Queen”? My wondering is realised halfway, with a very familiar-sounding, atmospheric interlude, before returning to their very special brand of Metal fury.

This band has something to offer for any fan of metal or rock music; while the vocals may initially come off as annoying, I believe they may have a tendency to grow on the listener with continued perusal of their work. In general, the musicianship is excellent; each of the band members are apparently highly skilled with their instruments, and use them to forge songs that are unable to be chained down by stereotype and genre.

Gloryful - The Warrior's Code (2013)

Gloryful - The Warrior's Code

Gloryful's The Warrior's Code is a Power Metal album of the muscular, testosterone-fueled variety. The riffs are plentiful and thump you in the ribcage unceasingly, the drums are dominantly double-kick and the singer leans hard into the vocal lines. The lyrics deal with warriors, Heavy Metal and the like so between the sound and lyrical themes, comparisons to Manowar and Virgin Steele, with a bit of early Helloween thrown in, are going to be apt. There's nothing new on The Warrior's Code and the vocals aren't up to level of Eric Adams or David Defeis and are actually a bit flat occasionally. Still, if all we valued was innovation and pitch-perfect singing, there would be a lot of Metal that would be left by the wayside and the rest of the playing on The Warrior's Code kicks some ass, especially if you are a guitar aficionado. Vito Papotto and Shredmaster J.B. know their way up and down a fret board and there are copious leads and fills that will make guitar lovers quite happy. The Warrior's Code is a decent debut for Gloryful and these Germans show some potential.

SupreMa - Traumatic Scenes (2013)

SupreMa - Traumatic Scenes

“The Invisible”, a supernatural thriller about a writer with bright future until brutally attacked and left to die. He find himself trapped between the worlds of living and dead, his only chance for survival is to unravel the mystery of what happened to him and why, before it`s too late…I bet you wonder what the hell this has to do with anything? Well, there begins the story of the “Traumatic Scenes”.

Brazilian Power Metal quartet SUPREMA managed to exploit the idea behind this movie into mixture of poetry, great vocal performance and even better music. Don`t be fooled, it`s not the movie in verses (this isn`t “Les Miserable’s” for crying out loud), but the tale about various stages of human mind and parapsychology. Themes covered are fury, anger, visions, nightmares… I`m not going to reveal all, some things you should discover by yourself.

Album introduction – “Marks of Time” brings the distant echo of music with the spoken verses, narrated by Tarsis Marim. “Dark Journey” is the real album opener, explaining how does waking up on the “other side” feels like. Fast music, and keyboard effects in unexpected parts, amazingly combine and hint that something unnatural is happening. Music remains fast, but the keyboards change into choirs, amazing melodies and pretty solid guitar solo somewhere halfway through “Rising From the Ashes”. Is there a better way to describe the “Rage and Fury” other than heavy riffs? Didn`t think you`d disagree. “Visions From the Other Side” besides keyboards and heavy riffs introduce acoustic guitars and some guttural vocals belonging to Victor Prospero (try to remember his voice cause he`ll be back growling on two other tracks “Burning my Soul” and “Traumatic Scenes”) making this track pretty interesting. “Burning my Soul” is the sound of unfilled dreams and anger in full force. The storm of rage is over, leaving reminiscence of the time before. “Memories”, nostalgic ballad, makes great contrast to the previous track. Everything comes with a price, dearie - and that`s what the progressive “Nightmare” and psychedelic “Before the End” are all about. “Iced Heart” is yet another progressive and heavy track, with amazing guitar riffs. Last track, the carrier of the album title “Traumatic Scenes” tells the whole story in short, highlighting the tragedy of previous events, and the traumatic outcome that these events have caused.

Overall SUPREMA brings you one great story in amazing package. If you liked “Mercy Falls” by SEVENTH WONDER, you`ll like “Traumatic Scenes”, too. These guys from São Paulo did an amazing job on their debut album, and it would be a shame for it to remain undiscovered by many.

Royal Hunt - Collision Course...Paradox 2 (2008)

Royal Hunt - Collision Course...Paradox 2

Denmark's Royal Hunt are at it again, this time around with a new singer in Mark Boals (ex-Yngwie Malmsteen, Ring of Fire), who replaces John West, and a continuation of the Paradox saga, one of their most respected works, in the form of Collision Course-Paradox II. Nowadays, it's not uncommon for bands to create sequels to concept albums, so keyboard wiz Andre Andersen and his group of merry men should be no exception. All the bombast & passion you would normally expect from Royal Hunt is here, Boals fitting in quite well actually, as the band churns out ten tracks of melodic, symphonic, progressive metal.

Rounding out the band here are guitarist Marcus Jidell, Allan Sorensen on drums, and bassist Per Schelander. In addition, there are a host of guest vocalists who helped with the CD, including Ian Parry, Doogie White, and a few others. Some additional musicians adding violin, cello, and woodwinds add to the epic scope of the album. Huge beds of orchestral keyboards, searing guitar work, and Boals' histrionic vocals take tracks like "The First Rock", "Exit Wound", and "The Clan" to grand and powerful places, while "Divide and Reign" and "Tears of the Sun" are just majestic examples of classy progressive metal, featuring plenty of complex instrumental bits, haunting melodies, and strong vocals. Speaking of vocals, if anyone wondered how much Mark Boals had left in him (let's face it, the guy has sort of been out of the spotlight for a while), check out his soaring pipes on "Hostile Breed", where he gets in some Halford/Owens/King Diamond type upper register screams amidst his more mid-range melodic style, showing he can still hang with the big boys of the metal world. Jidell also really shines on this one with some tasty neo-classical shredding.

Since we weren't supplied with lyrics, I can't tell you much about the storyline here other than this time around, it concentrates on a "collision course between the ways of the modern Western world and new breed of culture grown on Eastern religious movements." Royal Hunt fans will no doubt be ready to soak this all up, a new chapter in the history of the band, as they take a new step forward with new singer Boals and a continuation of the Paradox saga.
