Witheria - Devastating Return (2014)

Witheria - Devastating Return (2014)

Old school Thrash has been given a new dimension in recent years with so many bands embracing the genre that I feel that it might be the only kind of music that will still be played even in post-Apocalyptic era by aliens and zombies, considering the lyrical themes these bands end up with!! Hahaha!! Consider WITHERIA, originating from Finland, blasting their 4th full length album here with “Devastating Return”, goes with the tried and tested ways of riff based Thrash Metal and still sounds fresh.

While the album starts off with fast paced thick riffs with little or no innovativeness, as the album progresses the riffage gets better and axemen Markus Taipale and Lappis are found bringing in new and innovative riffs to the table all the way through. Surprisingly there are wonderful short drum solos as well by Rob Diver behind the drum kit, and not to mention the fast paced drum beats that fills the album all the way through. Without trying to be the fastest band on the planet, WITHERIA brings in innovative catchy riffs and not to mention some exquisite solos like in “Burnt to Ashes”. The bass of Max Pekkonen does pop out every now and then, but does manage to succeed in making the album sound heavier and much better as a whole. Tuberculosis seem to scream the hell out of his vocal chords and occasionally bringing in growling vocals in every song. Though the vocals are reminiscent of few other Thrash bands like SODOM, which bring in similar vocals, it’s the timing and not over doing it, is what really works for these boys. I was quite surprised to hear duel vocals together in “Some Wounds Will Not Heal”, but the band does no mistake in executing it right! Surprisingly there is some chaotic music in “Thrown Down the Well”, of which all of it isn’t impressive, but then again the band moves into its original riff based Thrashing which works just fine. The band finishes of the album with “Back on Earth”, trying to over experiment/innovate here with a 9:38 min song and the song itself being not as good as the band intended it to be and in my opinion losing the momentum and impact created by the album till then, and is probably the only major disappointment in ‘Devastating Return’.

The production is quite impressive as the band hasn’t tried to over polish the album and has a light raw feeling to it and lyrically speaks about weapons and armoury created by man and the problems it has caused to the human mankind at large. WITHERIA seems to show a lot of maturity with this album and this album has all the ingredients to make it to some Top 10 lists at the end of the year and is an album you don’t want to miss if you are an ardent Thrash Metal fan like I am.
