Exlibris - Humagination (2013)

Exlibris - Humagination

On through the edges of the mind, the seas of imagination, unending possibilities waiting to be fulfilled, sequencing the subconscious to work overtime in order to experience occasions in a different light, like looking on your true self from the outside. Maybe there is a reason why man’s subconscious is most of the time blocked from view, who knew if it would have been for good or utter chaotic encounter. Surfacing another path between melodic Heavy Metal dosed by Hard Rock with traces of Euro Power Metal fixated on splinters of progression, there is an additional player that captured my attention, actually this band EXLIBRIS from Poland. Easily I am able to call these guys the Polish MASTERPLAN (Jorn Lande era), however, there are also several indications of IRON MAIDEN, ROYAL HUNT, BALANCE OF POWER, PERSUADER, POWER QUEST, SECRET SPHERE, EDEN’S CURSE and VISION DIVINE. “Humagination”, via Metal Mind Productions, was just released, ascribing to the band’s melodic guitars’ admiration, heavily active keyboards in good taste and constructive arrangements while not deserting Metal’s riffery crispiness and a profound harmonic vocal showcase with a commanding authority.

Listening to this album for several time felt as if time has no meaning, it just halted from moving forward. I was drowned in a sea of riffs, battered by a storm of melodies cradled by masterful atmospheric keyboards that also kicked a few soloing efforts just in the right timing phases along with being mesmerized by the diverse songwriting, multifaceted arrangements and orchestral engagements. Though conjuring some tremendous ideas, EXLIBRIS set themselves in a path that is rather common to this crossbreed between Heavy / Power Metal to Hard Rock. On the other hand, it all depends on the delivering, handling and of course the quality. Gladly, these guys proved that they have what it takes to dish a melodic Metal release, sliding through smooth lines of flow and musical elegance.

The “Another Day” song blazes into the air with an enchanting contemporary Symphonic type Hard N’ Heavy, showcasing a crispy harmonic riffs and powerful vocal display featuring bits of choirs. Possibly one of the best orchestration efforts I have heard in a while, following an impressive exchange of solos between the lead guitar and keyboards that is simply maniacal. “The Arrival” assumes the position as a passionate intermission within a sea of fast paced and heavier Metal. Though the last thing that I think is proper is electronic additions, I saw nothing more suitable to the arrangements done on this song. Practically, this is an astounding balladry where the frontline vocals were breathtaking. “Follow The Light”, could have been a MASTERPLAN / PLACE VENDOME tune with Jorn Lande at the helm, melodic Heavy Metal with joined with wonderful symphonic enhancements with tips of catchy Hard Rock. Not fierce for an opener, yet a good song nonetheless, just wait till you hear the lead guitaring. “Left Behind” is a driving force, bombastic, highly memorable with quite a diverse rhythm section that appeared quite tight. Once again the entire lead section, vocals and guitars, were phenomenal.

EXLIBRIS is a band that should endorsed into your Metal album collection. This five piece crew has established itself a significant posture to become one of the leading in melodic Metal. “Humagination”, on its mysterious theme, is smooth, somewhat complex and heavy at times yet it euphonious direction, in conjunction with the quality classical characteristics, made it comforting and easy to listen. Highly recommended.

Coma - Mindless (2013)

Coma - Mindless

When I think of Mindless, I educe the many folks that constantly kept reminding and antagonizing me about why do I listen and adore Metal music so much, what sort of treasures did I discover within whatever is considered as mere noise contraption. Well my friends, that is exactly what they are, but it was long time ago, and nearly the entire bunch aren’t my friends anymore and I hate to reserve a grudge. But mindless is mindless; no better term to describe the ignorance. The neck breaking foursome crew of COMA, hailing from the moshpits of Sardinia, Italy, maul the kernel of old school Thrash to modify your peace of mind with their culprit type of disease so you won’t go mindless on them. After a few years of preparations for the big bang, the band’s debut “Mindless”, via Punishment 18 Records, was released to the air, like a virus, to correct a few mistakes against Metal music and in general, against the hateful minds. Searching yourself while listening to this violent distortion will probably lead you to some of the band’s magnetic influences such as SLAYER, KREATOR, DESTRUCTION, METALLICA, OVERKILL, early SEPULTURA among the many that came down that distraught Thrash road. Beware; violence is roaming in your midst, not the friendliest of companions.

For one thing, I raise my fist to honor COMA for their resilience as with their first tryout at the belly of the beast, which is the gruesome world of Thrash Metal, they didn’t flinch from trying to be just a little bit more than your average raw Thrash combustions. Generally, especially due to the hefty Italian accent by the screaming younger version of Tom Araya meets Peavey Wagner like, Antonio Sanna, COMA didn’t appear that far from the South American Thrash Metal mosh loving dirt bags, however, their songs showed a certain inner insight to assert craftiness into the rhythms. I wouldn’t go far to recognize these guys as Progressive Thrashers like VOIVOD for instance, but “Mindless” indicated a bit more than the no frills, cracking speed and burning red nostalgic crude riffing, kind of Thrash. “Again”, featuring FORBIDDEN’s chugger, Craig Locicero hammering the lead fretwork, and “Mindless” are a duo of promising examples of a band that tried to outbid the rest of the Thrashers hording the scene with them with several breaks, crafty drumming and a few astute riffing. On the other hand, COMA didn’t also forget that they are stone cold killers, a Thrash Metal band that likes to run fast and furious, more to my liking I have to admit. “…Only Hate”, “Under Attack” and “My Venom Inside” (that ends so abruptly that it hurts after that definitive soloing), chopped mercilessly as Thrashers should, especially if you are a SLAYER fan, along with a few Heavy Metal short term riffs and cutting edge drum inductions.

Nevertheless, my main issue with this release is the fact that maybe COMA tried too hard to be assorted, above their character when it comes to their specific kind of music. I know that I mentioned the early prospects, but on the other hand, COMA also showcased tracks that are a bit too much trying to be sophisticated. Really guys, several of the breaks, and cross turns, along with over stretching songs without reason, especially while losing their inertial context, are just way too much to bear. “Mindless” is a good release of banging Thrash, a scream to the sky against hatred, dying for false ideas and closeness. It keeps the old motor running, even if a little banal at times, but also trying to renovate. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. Still a must listen.

Beyond Description - An Elegy For Depletion (2013)

Beyond Description - An Elegy For Depletion
Though they have been around since 1988, somehow BEYOND DESCRIPTION have managed to fly under the radar for the most part it seems. Beginning as a hardcore punk band, they have over the years transitioned to a more Hardcore / Thrash sound. BEYOND DESCRIPTION might not necessarily reinvent the wheel of Thrash Metal, but their aggression, speed and brutality begs for a circle in the mosh pit.

Having honed their niche in Thrash, AN ELEGY FOR DEPLETION is a worthy representation of this band’s talents. Shredding guitars are given on all eleven tracks by Yasunari Honda with riffs that pack their own ferocity. Not to be outdone, bassist Yusuke Adachi adds his own thundering attack on the bass, and Hiroshi Yoshioka keeps the speed ever ascending on the drums. Channeling his inner James Hetfield, Hideyuki Okahara is relentless and passionate as he growls out lyrics in the angriest Japanese I’ve heard.

From the opening track, BEYOND DESCRIPTION show you what you are in store for.  “Absurd” packs a heavy punch of high energy, speed and blinding fury. All but the final track contain the majority of this same driving, unfaltering speed, except for the closing instrumental “Depletion” which was a surprising sobering end to such an otherwise lightning fast album.  At about the middle of the album, “Arbitrage” stands out with its own intensity, some unexpected effects, timing and timing changes. Very vaguely it had some reminders of METALLICA’s “Four Horsemen”. “Shut” became a favorite with the intensity of the drums including the surprising drum focus at the center of the song. Bold and daring, “Provocation” does just as the title insinuates with searing rhythms and guttural vocals.

Fans of D.R.I., early era METALLICA, MUNICIPLE WASTE, and SEPULTURA will really enjoy BEYOND DESCRIPTION. Their latest offering AN ELEGY FOR DEPLETION is packed with such high intensity, when that last note fades you will find yourself hitting repeat, hungry and hunting for some of their older releases, or both. If you need some angry music to mosh to, headbang to, play air guitar too, this album is highly recommended.

Dethrone - Humanity (2013)

Dethrone - Humanity

Allow me to begin by saying that Sweden’s DETHRONE cites their influences as THE CROWN, AT THE GATES, SLAYER, DEFLESHED, and DECAPITATED…and these influences can be easily noted. In fact, DETHRONE does their mentors justice without flat out copying them, which is definitely always a good thing.

The album begins with “Dead Eyes Open” in which vocalist, Mattias Vestlund, lets loose with a punishing scream. This will wake you up much better than any cup of espresso. The riffs that sound almost like machine gun fire makes this first track a pretty exciting number as well. The following track, “Blood Red Dawn” has some very cutting edge and furious moments which literally caused some goose bumps to form on my arms.

There is a slower moment in “Forced Paranoia”, which gives you a chance to catch your breath from the full-fledged assault you have been enduring since the beginning of this CD. I advise you to take advantage of it, because it doesn’t last long. “Towards The Abyss” starts off rather different from the rest with some slower music and acoustic guitar. Your bleeding ears will get a brief reprieve, but before even a full minute goes by, you are getting beaten and bruised, just as before. Some impressive bass guitar, courtesy of Kenni Ojebrandt , kicks the final song, “When I Decide”, into gear.

Thrash and Death Metal fans should find much to appreciate in this brutal package known as DETHRONE. You have relentlessly pounding drums, painstakingly merciless guitar riffs and bass, and last but not least, the forceful vocals that most of us would shred our larynx if we tried to emulate. Each song is explosive and bleeds into one another in a fashion similar to SLAYER.

There were times that my attention span wasn’t quite up to the challenge, as the songs do tend to carry on at the same pace throughout most of this CD. But all in all, I would put DETHRONE’s “Humanity” on my list of ruthless Metal recommendations.

Demencia - Religion Of Sin (2013)

Demencia - Religion Of Sin (2013)

Taking religion by the throat, gutting its entrails and letting the blood flow, a perilous sin or a brutal search for the truth? It has been suggested by various artists, and not just Metal artists, that religion has its portion of sins and is nor holy or divine than everyone’s own draw of breath. But as it is the way of the world, every concept or belief in an idea has various of forms without one dominating the others. Yet, I somehow can’t believe that the Chilean Thrashers, DEMENCIA, truly wished to discuss religious matters other than to enforce their own religion of Metal, therefore hatred is no option.  It too the assasinos five years to come up with their sophomore release, yet I believe that it was worthy waiting for. “Religion Of Sin”, via DigMetalWorld, is shattering and crushing, tormenting as if it was a part of earlier discography of the Teutonic lords, KREATOR, and moderately tasting the oxidized blood irons of DARK ANGEL, with a fierce type of Thrash, letting their damnation out with sheer force.

As I began to stride through the corridors of this vehement release, I couldn’t ignore how close these guys sound to KREATOR, as if “Endless Pain” and “Pleasure To Kill” came back to haunt my very being. It started with the main riffs, heat fuming guitar soloing that burned my skins, and of course the Petrozza like vocals at full stretch, piercing with glory. Nonetheless, it was also noticeable that DEMENCIA struggled to step out of the old KREATORish dignitary while adjoining a few uneven song assemblies, speed demon passages, and slightly Americanised Thrash riffs. After a few listens, I can say that in general it worked out for them, but what can I say it still sounds and walks like a KREATOR late 80s release, of course not bad, yet also not what I would picture as utterly unique. On the other hand, coming to think of it, the large part of Thrash bands aren’t innovative but rather paying an overall tribute to their own gods. So I guess that DEMENCIA is one of those cases. At least their Thrash is well delivered. Their sort of upgrades didn’t always tick and sometimes even gutted the songs into a downward spiral like “Holocaust” or “Murderous Of Weapon” that were a total mess and not the classy “Total Disaster”. In contrast, “Maestros Del Infierno” (Masters Of Inferno) sung in Spanish, is an achiever, drawing its claws on display with a melodic intro that after a while twists and turns into a powerful riff based Thrasher, violent as hell. I couldn’t understand where the chorus was, but it wasn’t necessary as it dominated with its viciousness. “Dementhrash” displayed as a Thrash anthem, fighting for the band and the genre while “Mortal Sin”, the album’s heaviest track, took a rather Speed / Thrash of American origin, displaying an amazing main riff and great chorus section that would make old Thrashers proud.

“Religion Of Sin” is as it sounds, a straightforward piece of South American machinery with plenty of admiration towards the European and the American Thrash scenes. Infusing songs in Spanish was a right call in order to secure their South American roots intact, and at least one of them creased with no mercy. The KREATORish doctrine within the rhythms and beats, made DEMENCIA to come up with lead guitar efforts that in their benefit stood tall. They still have a little work to do regarding some of the songs’ arrangements as there was those that created too much confusion too handle, but I guess that in time it would be sorted out. I recommend this release to be listened by every Metalhead that respects the meaning of moshing and Metal.

Tragodia - Mythmaker (2013)

Tragodia - Mythmaker (2013)

Progressive Power Metal was a genre popularized by titans such as ICED EARTH and NEVERMORE, combining the technicality, speed and fantastical lyrics of power, and the complexity and maturity of Prog. TRAGODIA, a Progressive Power Metal band from Italy, have proved once again why the genre is in such a strong position in the metal world, and why it is nigh-faultless. Writing music that exudes heavy influence from the aforementioned bands, TRAGODIA add their own brand of catchiness and groove to make it their own. After all, the whole point of a progressive band is to be progressive and push genre boundaries.

Their new album, "Mythmaker", contains almost all of the great qualities of such an album: it's heavy, it's melodic, it's progressive, it's catchy, it's heavy, it's groovy, it's…  Heavy. It is by no means calm and jazzy, such as some of the work from the penultimate DREAM THEATER. In the mixing, the heavily over-driven guitars, and the drums, are at the forefront, adding vertebrae to the heavyweight backbone that drives this album. "A Cry Among the Stars", the opening, and one of my favorite song on the album, begins with an epic buildup reminiscent of SERENITY, cuts in with riffage worthy of neck snapping headbanging which paves the way for verses that contain an obvious DREAM THEATER note of trippy syncopation. Lucas Meloni, proves to have some vocal versatility, often switching between majestic, powerful notes, and Thrash-like yells. The twin guitarists have already proven, in the song's solo, that they are capable of an incredible dual-axe attack. "The Oracle" is one of the heaviest tracks on the album with crushing riffage all around, supplemented by guitar harmony that is on a Scandinavian level; best solo on the album, and there are many to choose from. "A Temple in Time" is a relatively chilled-out track in comparison, with an incredibly catchy guitar / keyboard harmony. I am hearing a lot of old FIREWIND in this track. The next track, "Wisdom in the Meadows of Sorrow" comes across as a highly versatile track, combining riffage reminiscent of AMON AMARTH, and the wails of JUDAS PRIEST; overall, this creates an incredibly driving track. "Tidal Waves of Greatness" is exactly that; smooth, yet anxious transitions between acoustic passages and grandiose and dramatic choruses. "Once In Arcadia" is another dominating heavyweight with riffage that is not only devastating, but also extremely catchy; very reminiscent of IN FLAMES; another standout track for me. "The Stone and the Idol" is the longest track on the record, though only capping out at 6:21. It starts with an allusion to yet even more epicenes with a tasteful symphonic intro, and leads into extremely groovy riffage, and ends with the best outro riff on the entire record.

"Born Under Niobe" may be constituted as the heaviest track, which is definitely saying something. The song begins with a downright battery and harsh, thrashy vocals, and riffage so heavy that leaves your brain pulsing with the force of the kicks. The chorus' vocal melody is extremely catchy, and Meloni proves his excellent vocal capabilities. It leaves you completely unprepared for a repeat of the previous bombard, and soon we hear a classic gallop passage that leaves one with the urge to windmill the beards off that the song has just made us grow. "Mythmaker" is an interesting track, opening with an unexpected tapping bass solo that paves the way for some pounding, driving groove riffage that constitutes the majority of the song, and leads seamlessly into the fantastic instrumental, "The Weeping Rock Of Seriphus". Arguably, this song doubles as both an outro and an extension of "Mythmaker", concluding the album in a dramatic, lengthy fashion. Finally, the bonus track, "Downfall Of The Ancients"; I struggle to see why this song was left out as a bonus track, for it most definitely deserves to be on the record. The atmospheric keyboard tracking is absolutely gorgeous, and complements the song very fittingly; with the rugged vocal work, combines to make a highly engaging track.

To sum up this work of metal mastery, TRAGODIA are simply one of the reasons Progressive and Power Metal are my two favorite genres of Metal, and do their home country of Italy proud; absolutely deserving of more publicity, and I believe would make an unforgettable live performance.
