Aesma Daeva - Here Lies One Whose Name Was Written in Water (1999) Reissue 2009

Aesma Daeva - Here Lies One Whose Name Was Written in Water

First of all, let me say that I don't mind Industrial music at all; in fact, I really enjoy some of it, like Apoptygma Berzerk and Ministry.

And that's what this really is. The metal influence in here is very small, although it is obviously large enough to give it a place on the site. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but if you take out the metal influences from the music, you are left with some very nice, soothing, ambient and, frankly, boring music. Definitely nighttime stuff. It's mostly a combination of acoustic guitars and soothing syth sounds with some drums in the distant background, all underneath a beautiful female operatic vocalist à la Nightwish. It's pretty cool for a while, but there is little difference between the songs and nothing really reaches out and grabs you after the first few songs, leaving with a middling album at best.

The album opens with O Death (Rock Me Asleep), which features a beginning duet of vocals and acoustic guitar, which is eventually joined in by a very cool synth part and then some pretty heavy drums and riffage that play under the main theme. Next is Downvain, which opens with some church bells and then explodes into a solid doom opening with guitars, bass and drums, which eventually break off for the vocal solo and synth. The two combinations go back & forth for the majority of the song. Stay is a very catchy little industrial tune with great instrumental work--it's probably the best song on here. Disdain has some really amazing vocal harmonies with the drums, but there isn't much package-tearing (relatively speaking, of course) and the album is obviously going downhill. By the time we get to Introit I, the album has lost all value besides being a strong cure for Insomnia.

If you're a fan of Industrial or just more ambient music in general, you should enjoy this band. Doom Metal fans might also want to check this out, as the metal influences in this band are definitely of the doom variety. Otherwise, this album may be too light and ambient for your tastes.
