Kirk - Masquerade (2014)
Dubbed as ‘Melodic Heavy Metal with Progressive influences’ KIRK, from Basel, Switzerland comes at you with big sweeping sound, wide open melodic vocals, and rhythms that give it that ‘from the heavens’ huge sound.
Sore simply put, if you love the band DREAM THEATER this is right in your sweet spot. Epic songs, epic changes, and epic lead work all around. I was immediately taken by the opening track “Devil’s Claw” with the sonic-space keyboards and the constant timing changes for a song that tells a tale. “Supersonic” attacks with staccato drums and is high energy. The title track takes you down with aggressive riff work that builds to a darker crescendo, falls off to a slow tempo with some dark guitars in the background, excellent vocal work by Thomi Rauch and a deep, full chorus in the background as the song slowly takes back off into that high intensity trip yet again.
The thing I love about Swedish musicians and bands are that you can tell that they are much schooled and know how to write a song, hence the epic thrills that they bring to the music. These guys can play with a DREAM THEATER and hold their own on a dime, easily. They have moments that remind you of QUEENSRYCHE of “Operation: Mindcrime” vein as well. Intense.
I honestly did not come across one ‘filler’ track on the entire album as each song was as good as the last from start to finish. For melodic Metal with Progressive roots in there, this one is a homerun.
