Inperspective is an ironically titled EP featuring some remixes and random recordings from Norway's Theatre of Tragedy. Although this band is most often the point of comparison for any metal band featuring male death vocals paired with clean female singing, Theatre of Tragedy has toiled away in the land of highly generic music for pretty much their entire existence. Certainly they have been capable of a few good songs in their day, but you know all about that theory of a thousand monkeys at a thousand typewriters. This EP features one song from Aegis, an unreleased track and then a bevy of remixed songs from various studio albums. The thing that is most striking is when their music is deconstructed and put to a techno/electronic backing, it suddenly becomes much, much more interesting than anything they have accomplished on their own. In particular, the remixes of "The Masquerade and Phoenix" and "On Whom the Moon Doth Shine" are very well executed pieces of club dance music with very little of Theatre of Tragedy's style (beyond perhaps vocals melodies) intact. So when a band's best performance happens to be a remix, you must realize there is something fishy in Denmark, er, Norway. This EP definitely does put things Inperspective and helps one along to an epiphany that Theatre of Tragedy should probably avoid making their own music.

I could definitely see myself absolutely hating this as recently as a year ago, but after discovering Tears For Fears' surprising non-crappiness and developing a fondness for some early 80's MOR (Yacht Rock, you have much to answer for!!) my hatred for 80's new wave/goth/music in general has pretty much disappeared. The soaring vocal lines! The awesome bombasticness of so much of the stuff, the love of super digital sounding tones. It sure beats the hell out of the modern day Australian pop, which features whiny divas or terrible pop/folk dudes.

I can't name many in the way of influences as I'm not exactly an expert in this sort of stuff but this whole thing nails a lot of "80's music" type stuff. The gossamer-thin female vocals have a bit of an early 4AD vibe, the chorused clean guitars are straight out of the 80's, the production has those loud synths and big snare tones down, and the male vocals... Well, I'm not really sure where they're from, but those low, supremely bummed and not-really-all-melodic tones sound like a lot of gloomy dudes who want to be/be with Robert Smith or whoever. I love his real repetitive stuff in "Lorelei" (probably my favourite track in general) and yeah, for the most part he works well, making the whole thing a bit gloomier and weightier.

Admittedly metal influences here are somewhat thin on the ground; I'm not familiar with anything else these guys have done but I have a feeling that some other release was what get them accepted into the MA. There's a few variations on that "chugging in the background" type thing that Nightwish/most Eurogay bands have done, plus a bit of Katatonia thrown in, perhaps. Not really much in the way of guitar riffs, but the fairly solid keyboard layering keeps that from ever becoming too much of an issue. Plus, there's a bit of tonal variation; from chugging guitar action to vaguely post-punkish clean guitar arpeggios throughout keeps your eyelids from drooping. All in all the band understands that if you're not going to be riffing like crazy you gotta add some other things to keep the interest going; and while I can't see myself listening to this on repeat for hours on end it works for the hour or so it goes for.

This isn't amazing; I dig Lorelei and Siren but nothing here is pure gold or anything. Still, it's an enjoyable listen and seeing as I've heard sweet FA of Gothic stuff it's a relatively unique sounding thing, for me at least. Give it a listen if you're curious/bored, there's far worse things you could be doing.

The following review concerns Velvet Darkness They Fear, the second album of the Norwegian Gothic ensemble Theatre Of Tragedy, released one year after their wonderful eponymous debut album. Velvet Darkness They Fear is a fine and strong continuation of the style the musicians brought to audiences with their first release, emotional and graceful songs in an atmosphere of doom and Gothic styles. Theatre Of Tragedy's sound is genuine, clearly distinctive from their colleagues of Tristania and Sirenia and more centered around mellow melancholy, in some ways more similar to My Dying Bride.

Velvet Darkness They Fear (what a title... in fact, Theatre Of Tragedy's titles always were well picked...) indeed has velvet darkness. The music does strongly associate with the feeling of dim candle-lit chambers with soft and heavy dark tapestries, with beakers of dark blood-red wine on the tables and radiant beautiful girls with prominent cleavage waiting for us to come and... drown in the bliss....

The album is a good and strong one of the era when Raymond still sang with fine growls suitable for the music instead of the carrot-voice he's using now. Liv Kristine is the queen of the album as she was also on the first release and remains later on Aegis (let's forget the sexy-bitch vocals on the infamous disco hit releases). The tender and slightly sad voice of Liv Kristine on Velvet Darkness They Fear is what makes the music most calming and enjoyable. She indeed is one of the loveliest singer in metal both in her stage presence and way of expressing herself in her songs.

The keyboard passages appear as the most expressive part of the instrumental construction and contribute a lot to the atmosphere. Some bands use more expressive and symphonic string melodies, Theatre Of Tragedy's trademark indeed is mainly piano, creating the distinct chamber music effect. A positive side is the old fashioned attitude and the lyrics in older English languages.

Now some prominent songs that can be found on this release, first of all, the beginning of the album with the title track as introduction and the second song "Fair and Guiling Copesmate Death" are both very suitable for opening the album in proper mood. My personal favorite is the German language track "The Dance of Shadows" or "Tanz der Schatten", one of the most haunting songs on the album and of all the music of the group. "And When He Falleth" is an interesting and thoughtful song with a pleasant dialogue from a play. "On Whom The Moon Doth Shine" is a song resembles the style of My Dying Bride but, of course, in Theatre Of Tragedy's own sauce with Liv Kristine as cherry on top of the tart.

Theatre Of Tragedy made a beautiful chapter in the history of Gothic music. The second part of their trilogy of three grand albums is an important piece of music and delightful for those who appreciate that style and the voice of Liv Kristine.

One of the forerunners of the gothic metal scene, and certainly one of the first to employ the "Beauty and the Beast" effect, Theatre Of Tragedy's debut full length takes the blueprint laid down by the likes of Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride and adds a few extra layers of 'darkwave' atmosphere, most notably with the presence of Liv Kristine, but also with a stronger permeation of keyboards, principally an organic piano sound. The results may not be revelatory, but with its emphasis on atmosphere and a heavy brooding production adding a cavernous quality to the doom-ladden riffs, this album remains one of the classics in the development of gothic metal as a definitive genre.
Sullen riffs open this album with plodding tempos, yet never repeat themselves to aggravating levels. There's a healthy amount of ideas and shifts in aggression popping up within each of the tracks, except the instrumental "Monotone" which takes a particularly cool note pattern and rolls with it. Guitars interweave melodies when not slugging away at morose chord progressions, and the keyboardist appears reasonably busy throughout, avoiding lush symphonics and going for an older, more traditional presence. The flow for these tunes range from a dirge-like crawl to medium-paced stomps, and the echo on the drums adds a necessary foreboding aura, particularly during "Sweet Art Thou", in which the snare's resonance is powerful and almost otherworldly thanks to the generous reverb.
Vocally is where things get interesting, and what was back then a novel approach to reciting the lyrics. Raymond's un-amused growl has depth and carries enough of that morbid slovenly feeling to blend well with the melancholy melodies. As a complete counterpoint, youngster Liv offers ghostly female wisps that linger in the air like a cold vapor cloud. I'll be honest, her voice works fine as a direct foil to the growling, but without those growls, this would be one chore of an album to put up with since her one-dimensional and somewhat amateurish delivery eventually would furrow the brow and annoy the living shit out of me. At times it is effective though, circumventing pop convention for Elizabeth Frazer worship that adds to the mellower moments such as "...a Distance There Is...", a lengthy song bluntly on the goth side of the gothic metal spectrum. In general, together the two singers generally compliment each other decently, except during the few occasions when they sing together in unison, sounding like some sort of deranged parody of a duet that I picture avant garde acts like The Residents thinking "We need to try that!"
As one of the initial harbingers of gothic doom before the floodgates of female-fronted corset obsessed metal acts opened wide, this debut remains one of the more listenable ones due to the dynamics of the spacious production, baroque lyrics, off-setting vocal approaches and some pretty well written doom riffs. If Liv had a bit more skill at this entry point in her long career, or at least varied her tone a bit once in a while during the recording, this album would hold up even better in comparison to major efforts by better developed later acts appropriating aspects of this sound to their own similar visions. Theatre Of Tragedy themselves would soon evolve into a less underground-anchored band by streamlining their style and eventually ditching the growls, but in this case they stick close to their death/doom roots, flirting with the notion of evolving into a more goth-oriented band thanks to what seemed to be a growing interest by them and other acts towards the 4AD ethereal class of gothic derived music. As a product of its time, Theatre Of Tragedy's self-titled effort is still a worthy enough benchmark for a style they contributed immensely in developing.

Starting their life the way many Goth Metal bands do, as a Doomdeath act, Theatre of Tragedy raised the bar a bit higher than many of their contemporaries with the addition of a female singer. This in and of itself isn't revolutionary, however, the fact that she had just as much if not more time singing than the male is.
Shortly after their third recording the bands leader decided to shed their metallic skin for a far more trendy/radio friendly synth-pop sound. A few albums later the female singer departed for heavier wears and Theatre was left with a decision. Thankfully they made the right one and returned to a more Metal sound.
On 'Strom' we hear an excellent Gothic Metal release with more than a few passing nods to 'One Second' era Paradise Lost (specifically in the Keyboards). The production is very good, and overall there is little to get upset about. The worst part of this is male vocals which are nothing more than spoken word parts.
The guitars sound is if they are nothing more than amp overdrive. The bass is clean and drums are competent. The keyboards, while not as brilliant as on prior releases certainly hold their own, but they add an underlying pop feel to many of the songs (not a terrible thing mind you, but not necessarily what you would expect to hear).
New comer Nell has well honed chops of her own. She has a very different voice but it fits the music well. She certainly has a wide range that is a mid to high (almost child like at times) that adds an ethereal quality to the music at large.
The songs are in the verse chorus verse format and are mostly energetic love anthems. There are slight dirges of sorrow that are accented by Nell’s unique vocals. There honestly aren't any weak links here; this is a pretty solid release from these prodigal children. Here's to hoping they keep it up.
