Zoldier Noiz - Regression Process (2014)

Zoldier Noiz - Regression Process (2014)

ZOLDIER NOIZ, a French band formed in 1999, have just given us an excellent album entitled "Regression process". Indeed a masterpiece I would say, and all the mess starts off with "Grave Crawler" and from then on it is all about Thrash Metal. These three French maniacs managed to incorporate a little bit of VOIVOD, old SEPULTURA, MOTORHEAD and some old Punk style into their music and the outcome is total destruction, I mean, organized chaos well played and with lots of energy.

I quite like the idea of short songs, you do not have to play six minutes songs to prove that you are good, most songs in this album are about three minutes, and it is just total mayhem, Thrash Metal at its best. Most songs have killer solos, amazing drumming at speed of light and very tidy indeed, old school vocals and torturing riffs, it is old school with a fresh sound, as production goes it is very basic and perhaps that is the secret behind this excellent album, no techno bullshit behind it, everything just comes together like magic, only a "Filthy Few" will survive this onslaught and there is no "Random Justice" because "Tomorrow Is Today".

Unspeakable Axe Records have signed an amazing band, where did they find these guys I do not know, all I can say is that, please find some more! Ah don't we love the French? They have given us some amazing bands in the past, bands like: KILLERS, SORTILEGE, NIGHTMARE, ADX, MASSACRA and now ZOLDIER NOIZ, vive la France!

Exmortus - In Hatred's Flame (2008)

Exmortus - In Hatred's Flame (2008)

I won’t profess to have any knowledge of what “neo-classical thrash metal” actually is, but if that’s what indeed ExMortus is, then I stand impressed. I had never even heard of the genre before these guys, which leads me to believe they thought of it on their own. What it boils down to in the end though, however, is that these guys can play, and that’s all that counts.

Another emerging band from the newly rising death/thrash scene, ExMortus’s calling card isn’t being overly heavy, or being murder-oriented, but by being exceptionally adept at their instruments. Their full length, “In Hatred’s Flame”, reeks of technicality and incredible achievement. Nearly every song is covered in mini-solos from guitarists Tak and Conan, not to mention unorthodox and impressive drumming by Mario. Truth be told, there are hints of neo-classical on here, which then makes their new genre sound even more rightfully titled.

Kicking off with the title track, “In Hatred’s Flame” releases a salvo of pulverizing riffs that are connected by solo-like fills (which is mainly where their neo-classical influence is shown) and Balmore’s death metal oriented frantic screams. It doesn’t take long to see just how talented Tak and Conan are, since about a minute into the song you come across the first of many intense short solos that grace this album with their appearance. “Triumph By Fire”, which may just be the best metal song of 2007, features some of the most insane guitar fills in thrash history. Mix that in with Mario’s crazed short drum solo and Balmore’s constant wails of “Triumph by fire!”, and you’ve got yourself a definite head-banger. The rest of the songs follow in similar suit, such as the melody-infused instrumental shredder “Axes of War”, or the hammer-pounding thrash assaults “War Gods” and “Onward to Battle”. The closer, “Storms”, is destined from the start to snap some necks with its heavier tone.

Most of ExMortus’s material centers around battle, which is often complimented by blistering solos. Balmore constantly teams up with Tak and Conan to deliver a truly unique, frenzied experience. While he screams out “Up off your selfishness and in your damned throne, For your betrayal you are plagued to burn!”, he’s meet by ferocious riffing and complex fills. While Balmore’s vocals are certainly a strong point, it’s Tak and Conan who constantly deliver a Godly performance. This can easily be summed up on one song: “Onward To Battle”, which features Tak and Conan not trading off, but soloing at the same time! If that’s not metal, then nothing is.

If anything plagues this album, it’s the actual length of it, since there are only 7 tracks. While each of those tracks is worth a ton of listens, overtime you’ll find yourself wishing for 2 or 3 more. Along with that, Balmore’s bass isn’t as dominated as most would like it to be, as it takes a backseat to the guitars and drums. It’s not really that big of deal, but if Balmore can follow Tak and Conan along, it’d be wicked to hear him bust out some fills of his own.

“In Hatred’s Flame” is a phenomenal debut hands down, and it clearly shows that ExMortus has a future ahead of them. The guitar work is some of the most impressive I’ve ever come across in a long time, and mix that in with great drumming and solid vocal work and you’ve got yourself an album that won’t grow dull. And did I mention that “Onward to Battle” has Tak and Conan soloing at the same time?

Temnein - 404 B.C. (2014)

Temnein - 404 B.C. (2014)

Temnein is a progressive extreme metal band with thrash/death influences. On their debut album "404 B.C." you can expect a wide array of tempos and aggression throughout, at times highly engaging in a melodic thrash/death framework and then at other times harsh and abrasive. Guitarists James Camozzi and Florian Frandidier steal the show on cuts like "Tangled" and "The Realists" with their At The Gates meets Quo Vadis/ Machine Head like harmonic-laden riffs and fluid lead breaks. Rhythmically the band have a lot of the technical chops and stunning tempo twists that Between The Buried and Me or Darkest Hour favor.

I do not believe the popcorn-oriented snare hits benefit Temnein in terms of what you would hear live, and as a vocalist Yoann ‘Sub' Sachot employs a decent if albeit expected harsh delivery that is some parts Robb Flynn, other parts metal-core. The somber moments in "Heart Hooks" where the guitars/ drums / vocals blend as one should be an area the quintet explore a little more in future recordings, and the 13:37 "Bright Knife" has too many middle of the road parts to justify its longer arrangement.

As you can tell, "404 B.C." is a mixed bag for my metal tastes. Temnein I think probably sustain appeal with the younger generation who don't seem to mind the shifting riffs/ tempos and stylistic changes, often within a nanosecond's notice. Talent is there, so maybe this record just needs a lot of time to dig deep into the brain and body for long term success.

Terrorblade - Of Malice And Evil (2013)

Terrorblade - Of Malice And Evil
I often find that no matter how much someone claims they "hate Thrash Metal", it's impossible to not find some sort of Thrash band in their playlist, whether it be MEGADETH's entire discography or a boot leg of some local thrashers. The German triplet TERRORBLADE have recently released their debut album "Of Malice and Evil"; honest, heavy, fast, furious, diabolical, thrashing heavy metal. That's all there is to it, and all that a good Thrash album needs.

"Malice and Evil" propels the album with some delicious-sounding heavy riffage, reminiscent of another German band, a giant in their Metal scene: RAGE. The vocals also share a striking similarity with that of Peavey, as well as a neck-snapping crunch about the riffs. What drew me into this band at first was the uniqueness of the vocal style; much thrash I hear uses vocals that consist mostly of pained yelling, and yet Michael "MetalBasstard" Bolle to pull off an aggressive bark that is full of guttural anger. The ever-proverbial of "Prometheus" is thrashed out further along in said track, and I am initially fooled by a seemingly mid-tempo chug-along. Soon enough, however, I am reintroduced to some windmill-inducing, SLAYER-inspired riffage. Unlike (unfortunately) a great amount of Thrash, this track is not a simple wall of sound; there are enough intriguing changes in riff sequence to keep one interested. Thrash Metal with an air of intelligence; deliberate or not, I am indeed intrigued.

"Time to Die" was probably my favorite track on this record, starting with a groovy bass with, progressing into a (yes, really) progressively-flourishing maze of riffs. Aside from that, much of this song sounds like something out of MEGADETH; another plus. Hell, even slight inflections in the vocals even sometimes remind me of Johan Liiva from ARCH ENEMY's earlier years, who was known for a more thrashy-approach to Death growls. The final track, "World is Broken", feels more like anthem track, with incredibly obvious ICED EARTH vibes in the riffage, vocals aside. Oddly enough, there are actually hardly any vocals present on this track; rather, smatterings of pained screams of lyrics. Considering the apparent repetitiveness of the riffs in this track, it feels as if a greater vocal presence would flesh out the song.

This is a band that exemplifies what Thrash Metal should be: heavy, thrashy, chaotic, fast, furious, brutal, and audibly terrifying.

Dethrone - Humanity (2013)

Dethrone - Humanity

Allow me to begin by saying that Sweden’s DETHRONE cites their influences as THE CROWN, AT THE GATES, SLAYER, DEFLESHED, and DECAPITATED…and these influences can be easily noted. In fact, DETHRONE does their mentors justice without flat out copying them, which is definitely always a good thing.

The album begins with “Dead Eyes Open” in which vocalist, Mattias Vestlund, lets loose with a punishing scream. This will wake you up much better than any cup of espresso. The riffs that sound almost like machine gun fire makes this first track a pretty exciting number as well. The following track, “Blood Red Dawn” has some very cutting edge and furious moments which literally caused some goose bumps to form on my arms.

There is a slower moment in “Forced Paranoia”, which gives you a chance to catch your breath from the full-fledged assault you have been enduring since the beginning of this CD. I advise you to take advantage of it, because it doesn’t last long. “Towards The Abyss” starts off rather different from the rest with some slower music and acoustic guitar. Your bleeding ears will get a brief reprieve, but before even a full minute goes by, you are getting beaten and bruised, just as before. Some impressive bass guitar, courtesy of Kenni Ojebrandt , kicks the final song, “When I Decide”, into gear.

Thrash and Death Metal fans should find much to appreciate in this brutal package known as DETHRONE. You have relentlessly pounding drums, painstakingly merciless guitar riffs and bass, and last but not least, the forceful vocals that most of us would shred our larynx if we tried to emulate. Each song is explosive and bleeds into one another in a fashion similar to SLAYER.

There were times that my attention span wasn’t quite up to the challenge, as the songs do tend to carry on at the same pace throughout most of this CD. But all in all, I would put DETHRONE’s “Humanity” on my list of ruthless Metal recommendations.
