Mudvayne - L.D. 50 (2000)

Mudvayne - L.D. 50 (2000)

Nu-Metal arrived with ferocious anger back in the 90's or something, crappy bands such as Slipknot, Mushroomhead, Limp Biskit , and a long etc. drowned the metal scene with their idiotic songwriting, their dull execution and with the worst image a metal band can have (f.e. stupid dinosaur masks, ridiculous body paint, etc.) that's more o less why metal-heads fucking hate this genre. Well I said all this for one reason, I want to say that I don't fucking hate Nu-Metal because I've found a couple of bands with decent music, and right now I'll talk about one of them.

L.D. 50 proves all the metal-heads wrong, this album has good songwriting and interesting structures (f.e. the intro Monolith"). The songs presented here are catchy as most nu-riffs, but this time there are technical edges; it's actually great to hear funky bass-lines and irregular beats in songs like "Internal Primates Forever". Most of the songs have something interesting in them, even if it is a cool background or a weird effect, in the end it sounds just great; then there's the counterpart, a lot of songs, even when having some cool features, have also awful things (muddy melodies, annoying high-pitched tones, etc.). So if you think this in the positive way Mudvayne has balance in their album, inexperienced and irreverent balance, but balance nonetheless.

So what's so great about this band? Their ability to make different songs and original lines; there are some bands with superior originality levels of course (f.e. Korn), but Mudvayne had the guts to add bizarre tones, crazy bass-lines, asymmetrical drumming and chromatic vocals. That's exactly what makes this band better than most nu-metal groups doing the same Slipknot shit over and over again.

There's a song I highly recommend you to hear, it's called Prod and please try it with it's introduction called Recombinant Resurgence, you'll have then 2 minutes of weird sounds and creepy atmosphere to finally hear 6 minutes of amazing music. What I like the most of Prod is the layered scheme, the instruments can be fully appreciated both in separate ways and as a whole, the structure of this song is like nothing I've heard before, something like a simultaneous chord progression with at least 3 breakdowns between them to finally end with an explosion of every element presented in the entire song; yes it's nu-metal in the end, but a very good kind if you know what I mean.

This L.D. 50 trip is really implausible and amazing even in the layout and production; then I bought their album The End Of All Things To Come because I though they would do a fucking impressive work as a natural development and I was awfully wrong, I had to sell that album due to its crappiness, then I never had the guts to buy their last album called Lost And Found. But I still remember the old days when Mudvayne delivered one of the most original albums in Nu-Metal history, I still remember saying "damn, let me pick my brains and my shit up of the floor…" and actually I still say those things when I hear this album.

Best Tracks: You can actually divide this album in two, the first half (tracks 1-8) it's not THAT good, but damn the second half (9-17) fucking rules and that's why I'm giving this rating…"Prod", "(k)Now F(orever)", "Pharmaecopia", "Death Blooms"

Flowing Tears - Jade (2000)

Flowing Tears - Jade

I was literally in tears when I heard that Stephanie Duchéne had left FLOWING TEARS, she was so much for the band, her voice meant so much for the songs. A shock of this magnitude only makes me treasure albums like “Jade” and “Serpentine” more than I had done before. With their new album “Razorbliss” coming out March, which will be their first with new singer Helen Vogt, I wanted to get nostalgic for once with the band’s best album (IMO) “Jade”.

“Jade” was released at a time when the overcrowded Gothic Metal genre needed a facelift. FLOWING TEARS are one of Germany’s best kept secrets in Metal. In the early days of the band they used a different name, I think it was FLOWING TEARS & WITHERED FLOWERS, what a charming name. They released two albums under this moniker titled “Swansongs” and “Joy Parade”, which I haven’t heard (they seem to be impossible to obtain), then it was changed and cut down to just FLOWING TEARS.

The band decided to switch to a more accessible song writing style and the first offspring of the new adaptation is this marvellous album entitled “Jade”. “Jade” is a Gothic Rock album that cuts deep and leaves trails of red on the floor, a bittersweet album. Rock inspired Gothic Metal with great melodies, complementary keyboards and great female vocals from the rather unknown female Stefanie Duchéne is what you’re in for. Stephanie’s seductive voice is the primary weapon here; her voice is as beautiful as the imagery of her physical appearance on the shadowy band picture and unlike most female Gothic Metal singers she has low tonal register that’s darker and... well, jaded if I may say so.

“Jade” is one of the best records of its genre, the songs are simple but brilliant, the heavy riffs and beautiful melodies go hand in hand, the vocals are great and the atmosphere is really chilled and relaxed, almost romantic at some points. “Sistersun”, “Swallow”, “Lovesong For A Dead Child”, “Radio Heroine” and the title track are just some of the highlights of this album. “Coma Garden” is really chilled in its atmosphere and is perfect if you want some stressless music without panpipes.

In some songs there’s a male singer (I suspect it might be guitarists Benjamin Buss) doing some less effective singing, it sounds like he’s doped, dying or something, but it’s only a few lines so it doesn’t ruin anything; it’s a thing I could do without although he does fit into the final song “White Horses”.

This is easy listening Metal where simple song structures and good choruses play an important part and complexity is left behind. Recorded at Woodhouse Studios with producer icon Waldemar Sorychta (SENTENCED, THE GATHERING, LACUNA COIL) you don’t have to question the quality of the sound.

I’ll be following this band closely because this album has truly marked itself as one of my favourite Gothic Metal albums in recent years. What the future holds is of course uncertain. If Helen Vogt is as good as she’s rumoured to be and will surpass the quality of Stephanie, this Metal head will not stand on ceremony, I’ve got to hear something... NOW!!! So if you like Gothic Rock with Metal influences and relaxed atmospheres, this one is for you

Sacred Steel - Bloodlust (2000)

Sacred Steel - Bloodlust

Sacred Steel's Bloodlust is the first and only album of their's that I have purchaced, or intend to purchace for that matter. There are definatly some solid points to this album, but even once you get used to the vocalist this album is little more than background noise. Don't get me wrong there are some definate high points that other reviewers have pointed out, the best of them being that unlike some "fantasy metal" bands (Bal-Sagoth) their lyrics do not make me burst out laughing when i read them. Over all the album is solid with some very good work on the instraments especially the drums, even the vocals are fine once you get used to them. Sure they aren't exactly melodic, but shit we aren't talking about an opera here, we're talking metal. Once you get used to this that is what Sacred Steel is: metal. There's nothing wrong with it, but unless you're playing a D&D game where someone is running around with a magic sword named Stormhammer, this is hardly a clasic or eve a must buy. Just some decent metal, and thats fine with me.

Theater of Tragedy - Inperspective (EP) FLAC CUE LOG (2000)

Theater of Tragedy - Inperspective (EP)

Inperspective is an ironically titled EP featuring some remixes and random recordings from Norway's Theatre of Tragedy. Although this band is most often the point of comparison for any metal band featuring male death vocals paired with clean female singing, Theatre of Tragedy has toiled away in the land of highly generic music for pretty much their entire existence. Certainly they have been capable of a few good songs in their day, but you know all about that theory of a thousand monkeys at a thousand typewriters. This EP features one song from Aegis, an unreleased track and then a bevy of remixed songs from various studio albums. The thing that is most striking is when their music is deconstructed and put to a techno/electronic backing, it suddenly becomes much, much more interesting than anything they have accomplished on their own. In particular, the remixes of "The Masquerade and Phoenix" and "On Whom the Moon Doth Shine" are very well executed pieces of club dance music with very little of Theatre of Tragedy's style (beyond perhaps vocals melodies) intact. So when a band's best performance happens to be a remix, you must realize there is something fishy in Denmark, er, Norway. This EP definitely does put things Inperspective and helps one along to an epiphany that Theatre of Tragedy should probably avoid making their own music.
