Violator - Scenarios of Brutality (2013)

Violator - Scenarios of Brutality

It's always exciting to be introduced to new albums which these “New Wave of Thrash Metal” bands release every year, especially after years of listening to Thrash Metal, when you may be tempted to feel like you've seen and heard it all. Unfortunately there are many metalheads out there who say the last of the great Thrash bands died out in the 80's and early 90's. Those that claim this have clearly not heard of Violator, the forerunners in this “New Wave of Thrash Metal” trend, who, with their new release "Scenarios of Brutality”, show that Thrash is still a viable force in metal. After listening to this record, one thing is clear, the band's main focus has always been to produce a 100% pure aggressive, in-your-face traditional Thrash metal album. Sure, it doesn't sound like Overkill or Slayer, but that differentiation from the usual sound that thrash bands are associated with helps give this band an identity of their own.

The musicianship on this album is undeniable. Everybody in the band are top-notch at what they do. The guitar work by Capaça and Marcio Cambito is truly incredible. One interesting factor about the solos is the range, right from jaw-droppingly fast to melodic and hard-hitting, each solo is done with an expert amount of skill. To be honest there really isn’t much point in analyzing each song and sorting them out since each and every track from the album leaves the listener with a wholly unique vibe and you end up with an ubiquitous feeling of brutality. Out of 9 tracks, there is no temps' mort and the whole selection is insane as hell right from the frantic bombardment of energetic riffs on "Echoes Of Silence" to the closing with the infectious "Unstoppable Slaughter". One of the most important factors which is going to make this album a memorable Violator album are the series of searing solos, rapid tempo changes and fast transitions between riffing and insanely brutal solos which surpasses what they have done in their previous releases.

Additionally Violator has one unique factor which I really like about them is the ability to mix the basic elements of moderate to high speed thrash with beefed-up drumming to modernize the genre's sound, achieving a welcome robustness. Pedro "Poney Ret" Arcanjo vocals are spit out with appropriate venom. With Arcanjo on bass as well and Batera drum set establishes the foundation with a satisfying bass-heavy emphasis.

The lyrics penned by Violator are truly reflective of the deep turmoil that the members have experienced and witnessed around the society. The way the lyrics are written does add a certain depth beyond the standard chorus refrain and 'political statements' of thrash metal. The lyrical change on "Scenarios of Brutality”makes the album seem far fresher than most New Thrash Metal albums released in recent years.

Another important factor which shines in this album are the arrangements, bucking the 'one riff, one song trend by stuffing every track with at least four or five riffs. Simply put, this is a phenomenal sounding metal record. Yes, there are a lot of those around but for some reason this one sticks out for me. To conclude, the Brazilian metal masters, Violator's New Album, “Scenarios of Brutality” is one of the best thrash albums I have heard in this year and I have to be very honest when I say that bands are going to have to come up with something pretty special to beat this gem. While other bands such as Gama Bomb, Lazarus A.D. or even Warbringer give nods to the thrash metal bands of the eighties, I believe Violator is eighties thrash, and I welcome their return. This is the truth of the matter, because all of their tracks are f**king awesome; the absolute epitome of what Thrash can be.
