Fejd - Eifur

Fejd are now on their second album, and it sounds exactly like the first. That isn't too much of a problem, as it's still a unique sound. Of all the folk metal bands out today, Fejd are easily the folkiest. They're much more folk than metal anyway, sounding like a mess of folk instruments dressed up in metal clothing. This isn't to demean their music, as it's made with sincerity, and not trying to cash in on folk metal's popularity. This is neat and quirky music, with didgeridoos, hurdy-gurdies, and even cow antlers. In fact, this band doesn't even have a guitar player! They've continued with this aesthetic, having a sound that can be described as "light folk metal." It has all the elements of traditional Scandinavian folk music, but with some heavy hurdy-gurdy riffs and didgeridoo breakdowns. Yeah, really.

Despite the initial coolness of their sound, Eifur doesn't have much staying power as the album goes on, not to mention that it seems mired in self-replication of their first album, Storm. But to claim that Fejd are only kitschy would be both unfair and inappropriate. The music doesn't come across as aping Scandinavian folk music, but in tribute to it. Even while this is a commendable approach, it's still uninspired, and eventually limp, tired, and emotionless. This is a sound that is based in an instantaneous appeal due to its intrinsic quirkiness-- something that has no deep appeal to many metalheads. Folk metal is based in incorporating traditional Scandinavian influences, but not to this level.

Most fans of the genre will find this to be too out there, too different and esoteric. For some savvy fans who specialize in such obscure music, then sure -- this is their cup of tea. But they are a rarity. In such, apart from those few, Fejd will inevitably alienate and isolate potential fans with their steadfast adherence to traditional music mixed with minimal metal. Nevertheless, Fejd are original and execute their unique sounds admirable faithfulness.
