Code Of Silence - Dark Skies Over Babylon
As melodic fire-starters Eden's Curse continue to flounder under the weight of their lengthy vocalist search, step up Code Of Silence, who, featuring Eden's Curse bassist Paul Logue as their main songwriting source, although he doesn't actually feature as a member of the band, unsurprisingly plough a similar, if slightly less histrionic furrow. The band came about when Logue and James Murray (who does play bass in CoS) decided to put together a hard hitting melodic outfit, bringing keyboard player Scott McLean, drummer John Clelland, award winning guitarist Ben Randall and onetime Adagio and Takara frontman Gus Monsanto, together to become Code Of Silence, a band who sit comfortably between Blue Murder, Eden's Curse, Tony Martin era Sabbath, Dokken and Power Quest.
The Crusades and Knights Templar are a subject matter often plundered in the world of rock (none better so than the stunning Vox In Excelso by Saracen) and again it is an area that Code Of Silence ably use as lyrical inspiration. The themes lending themselves willingly to the chest thumping atmosphere created on Dark Skies Over Babylon. Randall really is an impressive find, infusing an infectious sense of energy and urgency into the music, with his fiery fret pyrotechnics being of the highest calibre, while his rhythm work is exemplary. However he is one of many stars on Dark Skies Over Babylon, with the keyboards adding depth and clarity to the vision, while the thunderous bass and precise percussion holds it all together. Add to that the expressive voice of Monsanto and Code Of Silence really do have all the ingredients to make a hefty mark and go the distance. "Black Abyss", while less insistent than most of the offerings illustrates that not everything has to operate at full velocity, Randall adding a little bluesy authority to the mix (his playing has a huge dollop of Thin Lizzy/Tygers Of Pan Tang/Blue Murder man John Sykes about it), while "Tame The Tempest" infuses more melody to an ever shifting tempo to offer up another flavour. However there's no denying that it is the foot to the floor numbers such as "Bitter Sweet Paradise" and "Knights Of The Crimson Cross" where Code Of Silence really start to rise above the countless bands operating in this genre.
Hopefully Logue and Eden's Curse can get their act together soon and grace us with the next instalment in their band's evolution. In the meantime Dark Skies Over Babylon by Code Of Silence is an album that fans of atmospheric, energetic, melodic hard rock shouldn't be without.
