Neuronspoiler - Emergence
Classic metal is a genre which I’ve never been too fond of and one which I have always been able to take or leave without too much acclaim. It is one of those genres that I wouldn't turn off if it came on the radio; however nor would I go through hell, fire and brimstone to find it. Neuronspoiler could well be added to this perception, but there is something refreshing about this release that made it slightly less boring that I imagined it to be.
Neuronspoiler’s current release 'Emergence' showcases some fantastic musicianship. The opening track is filled with magnificent guitar sweeps, solos and some groovy riffs. However they do sound a tad repetitive with a sound reminiscent of an Iron Maiden of our time, especially in terms of vocals. I fear music like this, especially with these kinds of vocals will be compared to the likes of Iron Maiden, Dragonforce and the like. It has all been done before, so is there anything left to accomplish in this genre? Neuronspoiler seem to think so, and to their credit they've made a very good effort.
It is also fair to say that the emergence of this genre of music is not as popular as it used to be say 20-25 years ago. Is it harder for bands like these to make it because of the genre they're attempting to emulate? Quite possibly. However this should not detract from the musical quality of the album, which is reasonably sound. The music has a slightly upbeat feel to it and then drops to the opposite, which is something I really like in an album; a mix of emotions that are projected by an album is a great talent, and one I'm sure many will appreciate.
This is definitely for fans of Enforcer, and if you like your speedy relentless power metal. By no means is this a bad album, it’s very well produced; the musicianship is of a very high quality and each member adds something different to the album. There is a lot to appreciate here no matter what music you're into. Some parts of the album are quite bland and will make you wish something more was added. There are then however, strokes of genius. If I could make one comment on this album it would more than likely be that the London lads haven't made the most of their talent.
Having said that, songs like 'Take The Stage' had me banging my head in a satisfactory motion. There are some metal core influences in here and it seems to work quite well alongside the guitar solo. The slightly noticeable influences make the album a very likable prospect; I just think a lot more could have been done to it to make it stand out (perhaps adding a progressive element).
The album has a nice flow to it; however the overall sound is quite repetitive. I’ve always found with this kind of music that there doesn’t seem to be much variety, yet 'Emergence' is a very professional release and I’m sure it will gain rave reviews. I would recommend this album to those classic rockers in their masses. Especially if you love some filthy bass guitar and some scandalous drumming, all to be taken positively.
Halfway through the album the band decide to embark on a ballad/porn groove adventure, very much like that of Dream Theatre, but without the interminable keyboards. “I am the Invincible Man” will be a line that will stick with you after this album; the slick guitars that follow and precede are delightful in many ways. This has a guitar tone similar to that of Scar Symmetry (Not the drop A tuning) which makes for pleasant hearing.
There has clearly been a lot of thought thrown into this album but I really feel that there is something missing that is holding up a giant wall in front of the potential progress of the band. Having said that it’s definitely an enjoyable listen, albeit not my taste.
I’d recommend this album to the classic rock/metal/power metal fans and even those who fancy something a bit different. The album may have a lot more to offer the true fans rather than myself, and I can easily see others appreciating it more. I'd like to reiterate that in no way is this a bad album. From a neutral to a negative standpoint my sole opinion is that, for something that isn't my taste, this is a very solid effort and can honestly wish them the best of luck and hope that their live performance is one to savour and enjoy, if it can match their level of production.
A great effort from the London Lads. I look forward to hearing and seeing more from them.
