I Legion - Beyond Darkness
Quebec guitarist Frederic Riverin starts this melodic metal project I Legion with the hope of assembling some of the great musicians of modern times to flesh out his ideas. Producer/ vocalist Chris Clancy (ex-Mutiny Within) is the first to come onboard, and soon the flood gates open with Bjorn Strid and Jon Howard (Soilwork and Threat Signal respectively) contributing vocals, plus guest guitar work from Peter Wichers, Angel Vivaldi, Brandon Jacobs, and Andy James.
So what should listeners expect on “Beyond Darkness”? Given the musicians at hand, it’s a mix of mid-tempo to slightly faster modern melodic metal- riffs with those pirate size hooks and harmonies, vocal melodies that gravitate to gruff screams and clean choruses, and a tough as nail rhythm section to drive home the grooves. “Night Calls” with Chris at the microphone helm and “Despite Your Grace” with Bjorn appear to my favorites currently - the latter containing this driving Prong-like spirit amidst the In Flames layering of harmonies. “We Will Fight” featuring Jon has more of a militant punch amidst all the double bass and guitar hero action taking place.
Sinking his own cash into this makes I Legion a worthwhile undertaking- the songwriting is on par with his inspirations (Iron Maiden, In Flames, Trivium) and he also tackles an out of the box cover for Bjorn to sing on with Pat Benatar’s “Love Is a Battlefield”. Frederic possesses a deep affinity for melodic metal- and a willingness to explore different shades of color and contrast with the riffing and soloing while keeping the arrangements tight and compact.
“Beyond Darkness” could be an unsung gem and should catapult Frederic to a bigger label if he so desires in the metal realm.
