Space Vacation - Heart Attack
The lo-fi album art work should give you a major clue as to Space Vacation's type of metal. If the cover was more rectangular, in black and white, and rather rubbed out, it could easily be found wrapped around cassette back in the tape-trading days of the early Eighties.
Yeah, Space Vacation and their second album, Heart Attack, on Germany's Pure Steel Record, is pure old school metal. Without apology, I might add. Basically, we're talking about a mixture of traditional with speed metal in a melodic wrapper. Space Vacation offers tight rhythm section to propel their groove and some slick solos work from ex-Vicious Rumors guitarist Kiyoshi Morgan. Vocalist and bassist Scott Shapiro has an interesting sound, sort of Geddy Lee without the screeching. Generally, this solid material and hit the old school metal nail on the head. Better tracks include Bro Hammer, End of the Bender, Summer Knight, which passes into more melodic hard rock, Loaded Gun, and Logan's Ruin. Others like Heart Attack and Loaded Gun are merely average. Nevertheless, Space Vacation are a talented crew, and Heart Attack is an entertaining time warp brought to the future. Easily recommended.
