Poisonblack - Lust Stained Despair (2006)

Poisonblack - Lust Stained Despair

The first thing you notice is Poisonblack's evolution. In comparison to their previous album, this is much heavier - but still nowhere near the caliber of Sentenced. Still, the influences are rampant, and you can hear some Sentenced-esque portions. The lyrical aspect isn't unexpected, as Ville usually doesn't diverge from the general subjects he used previously. My expectations weren't quite as high due to the fact that this is a side-project, and as a result my hopes weren't totally crushed.

The album opens with "Nothing Else Remains," which has a keening yet almost nu-metal riff laced with the Gothic tendencies you'd expect. Really, a slightly discordant and forgettable song. I get the feeling that Ville isn't putting in 100%, as his guitar work is usually much better than this (although it is pretty good here).

It picks up a bit with "Hollow Be My Name." The vocals are a bit stronger here, and the riffs are a bit heavier. Overall, better and heavier than its predecessor.

Next up, with "The Darkest Lie," the Gothic portion of the music is starting to leak through more. It's true that Poisonblack are really heavy, but the emotional aspect of the music is also apparent. The solo in this song seems to ooze despair rather than the usual anger (which is how it usually goes in metal). One of the better tracks on this album.

"Rush" continues from where track three left off, although I don't like it quite as much. The lyrics are so cliched it's almost ridiculous... 'going nowhere fast' etc etc. Only a slight notch above mediocre.

"Nail" and "Raivotar" are hardly worth mentioning. Sure, there are some good parts, but they're pretty forgettable.

"Soul In Flames" goes at a much faster pace, with a rather good solo. This track picks up the sagging album, and keeps the listener from turning it off. One of the better tracks on Lust Stained Despair.

After the rush of the previous track, "Pain Becomes Me" drags itself in. Acoustic guitar? A little out of place; this track would sound a little better placed elsewhere. If you're tired of Lust Stained Despair's heaviness, then you'll like this. If not, then you'll probably find this as an okay song.

"Never Enough" is pretty good. "Love Controlled Despair" is almost like a return to the first two songs, and would be better suited as track two (rather than "Hollow Be My Name").

"The Living Dead" -- finally, the end of the Lust Stained Despair... not a bad closing statement. In fact, one of the better songs here.

So -- while above-average, Poisonblack is suffering a bit. The album really starts to drag after a while, despite the fact that this is not a bad band. Let's hope that Poisonblack do better next time.
