Regardless of Me - Pleasures and Fear (2011)

Regardless Of Me are a unique gothic metal band from Italy that blend industrial, classical, and melodic death metal together for an intriguing experience. One isn't sure what to expect, especially when it comes to their second album, 'Pleasure and Fear.' The album opens with catchy, industrial beats that make one thing they're in for some synth pop music with some spoken, distorted words that seem like there is an influence from Skinny Puppy there, and then explodes into deep growls and heavy, yet melodic chugs that carry on throughout the music, obscuring the industrial elements until the music fades out. Then there are the more straightforward melodic death metal tracks like "Until I Die" that also feature female vocals layered within that really add on some gothic elements that make it sound like Deadlock. "From A Darkened Sky" throws in the clean vocals again and some acoustic sections, once again bringing out another really cool surprise along with some of the industrial elements creeped in as well near the end of the song.
"Dispositions" lets the female vocals take more command of the music throughout the verses and chorus, leaving the growls to be the backing vocals and layered within, but even then the band uses the industrial elements to add some new effects. Mostly it is within the female vocals for a more electronic sound- not quite vocoder- but certainly it sounds like she is singing into a phone more than a clear microphone. And there is even some funky bass movements at the pauses before the melodic death styled guitars cut in. The Madonna cover is turned into Regardless Of Me's own, but at the same time they almost eliminate all the original style of Madonna. The best part is near the end where only the female vocals are ringing out and the guitars and drums are silent. "Never Lose Myself" has some great lyrics and a catchy synth beat put in the background, much in the way that Dark Tranquillity would layer some of their music, or Raunchy. Finally, "My Bitter End" includes some piano and then just an easy, smooth flow of rhythm that remains heavy, but mixes in the gothic metal, heavy metal, melodic death metal, and industrial bits altogether at once for an excellent closing track that shows some of the best of Regardless Of Me's work.
As a result, fans of female led/ growl mixed vocal bands such as Deadlock, Lacuna Coil, and Eyes Set To Kill are going to find this easiest to enjoy, but even those who are only into singularities of the genres such as gothic or melodic death metal will still find this appealing. Fans who already know of this group will most likely consider the second album here stronger than the first, and that can only mean that they are just continuing on an uphill climb to greatness. 'Pleasure and Fear' is powerful and emotionally stirring without seeming flimsy, especially when one considers the lyric aside from the music.
